Evaluation of a website that promotes social connectedness: lessons for equitable e-health promotion

The online provision of health information and services has been viewed as having the potential to inform and empower health consumers and, ultimately, to promote better health. The Internet can be an innovative tool to deliver services to ‘hard-to-reach’ population groups, including geographically isolated populations. However, the online platform raises questions regarding the equitable distribution of health services. In this paper we examine a case study of a website that aims to promote health by fostering social connectedness. The website provides information to connect people to locally based community events across Australia. We draw on evaluation findings to examine the socioeconomic and geographical distribution of website usage. A descriptive analysis of web usage statistics revealed a gradient whereby more information is listed and viewed about events in affluent socioeconomic areas. Furthermore, the analysis showed that a greater proportion of information listed and viewed related to urban areas. These results are consistent with broader gradients of Internet access and usage. Drawing on these findings, we identify implications for online health promotion across different population groups, particularly for interventions that do not incorporate an explicit equity focus.

Carsharing as a service has been growing rapidly worldwide. Its expansion has drawn wide attention in the research community with regard to the underlying driving factors and user characteristics. Despite these extensive investigations, there are still limited studies focusing on the examination of users using carsharing as a commuting mode. The answers to questions such as what kind of people would like to use carsharing for commuting and why they frequently use carsharing to commute are not clear. To enrich our understanding of these problems, this paper aims to investigate carsharing commuters in a mega city. Specifically, it intends to integrate the actual user order data with survey data from 1,920 participants to uncover the characteristics of carsharing commuters. Data from the Evcard carsharing systems in Shanghai were explicitly analyzed. Through descriptive analysis and logistic regression models, the characteristics and critical factors that affect the choice of carsharing as a commuting mode were captured. The results show that: 1. carsharing commuters mostly live or work in suburban areas in which public transport accessibility is limited; 2. carsharing commuters are more likely to be highly educated, in a higher income bracket, and older than other carsharing members; 3. high-frequency carsharing commuters own a reduced number of private cars; and 4. those high-frequency carsharing commuters with higher income are less sensitive to the carsharing costs caused by congestion. The findings in the study offer some insights into carsharing commuters and provide some supportive information for considering policies in developing carsharing systems in urban areas.

The contributions of food street vendors (warung makan) especially from Tegal have greatly helped new migrants in urban areas because they felt the migrants came from the same region. This is particularly noticeable from the adjustment mechanism in a new area. They usually are immigrants coming from outside Jakarta. They live in less feasible locations, such as at the riverside. The questions are “How did they found their self-concept as small and medium traders as a food vendor? What is its effect on the level of awareness of healthy clean living among them?” This paper reports on a surveyof food vendors in North Jakarta. The size of the sample was 73 traders selling along Jalan Yos Sudarso, North Jakarta. The results showed that entrepreneur self-concept proved to exert significant effect on healthy hygienic behavior among food street vendors in Jakarta with the effect of 44.9%, while 55.1% was affected by other factors. This study proposes using information technology to encourage the street food vendors to maximise their income without ignoring healthy hygienic behavior.

Considering education is the prerequisite for human development, World Education Forum (1990) declared that provisions should be made for educating all people. The Government of India has already ensured free and compulsory education to all children within the age group between 6 and 14 under Article 21A of the Indian Constitution (The Right to Education Act, 2009). In 2006, the Government of India has introduced online learning in rural and urban areas as a purview of propagating education. Online learning is the electronic education process by which a learner can learn effectively. Now-a-days, it seems to be a useful tool for upgrading and propagating education throughout the globe. Report depicts that internet access in rural India is nearly 20.26%, as compared to 64.84% in urban India, whereas in West Bengal the internet access is estimated as a whole around 11% (Internet Live Stats, 2016). Lack of infrastructure, hardware facilities, Government policies, strategies and schemes, awareness about online learning material usage, computer based courses, skilled trainers etc. are becoming a hindrance for online learning to rural learners. In this context, the objective of the paper is to evaluate the uses and effectiveness of online learning during Pandemic COVID-19. The implication of the study is discussed through a case study in Chakdaha Block, West Bengal, India.

This study aims to determine the effect of TOD on the phenomenon of gentrification, the phenomenon of urban development and its influence in accelerating the distribution of development. The Maja area in Banten will be used as a case study where in accordance with the 2015-2019 RPJMN the area was also selected as one of the Public New Economic Zones in order to create a city that is safe, comfortable and livable and is expected to break down urban density so that equitable development can be realized. To achieve the objectives of this study, the analytical method that is used is descriptive analysis by comparing the precedents of the TOD concept in existing case studies with the case studies raised, namely the Citra Maja Development Project, in the Maja Region. After that, the validation of the results of the analysis is done so that a conclusion is that the Citra Maja Development Project is a good case to be used as a model for regional development with the TOD concept with the support of other licensing and administrative facilities by the government, thus indirectly suppressing the phenomenon of gentrification occurs in sub-urban areas

This research examines the factors affecting the financial literacy of Vietnamese adults. Using a sample of 266 observations of adults in 2 big cities in Vietnam (Hanoi and Vinh in Nghe An Province), the author evaluates the literacy level of adults in these urban areas. The financial literacy of the interviewed people is low. The multiple regression results show that lower financial literacy levels associate with higher age and married status and higher financial literacy levels associate with higher education, more family members, the person making financial decisions and the person attending a useful financial course. This research also explores the association between financial literacy and financial behaviors of individuals employing logistic models. It is found that higher financial literacy associates with less probability of overspending and higher probability of saving money and careful spending. Higher financial literacy is also found to associate with higher probability of opening a savings account and making various investments.

This chapter examines how civil war can influence the spread of language. Specifically, it takes Sierra Leone as a case study to demonstrate how Krio grew from being primarily a language of urban areas in the 1960s to one spoken by most of the population in the 2000s. While some of this was due to “normal” factors such as population movement and growing urbanization, the civil war from 1991 to 2002 certainly catalyzed the process of language spread in the 1990s. Using census documents and surveys, the chapter tests the hypothesis at the national, regional, and individual levels. The spread of a language has political consequences, as it allows for citizen participation in the political process. It is an example of political scientists’ approach to uncovering the mechanisms for and evidence of language movement in Africa.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to suggest the usage of the project finance (PF) scheme as a suitable mechanism to fund energy efficiency projects at the urban scale and present its advantages and adoption barriers. Design/methodology/approach – A case study is developed to renew the traffic lighting system of an Italian town via replacement of the old lamps with new light-emitting diode (LED) technology. Several partners are involved in the case project to construct a viable PF arrangement. Findings – The case study presents the viability of the proposed PF scheme that provides for acceptable financial returns and bankability. However, it also shows that the need for short concession periods may call for a public contribution to the initial funding to make the project more attractive to private investors. Practical implications – This case study is a useful guideline for governments and promoters to using the PF arrangement to fund energy efficiency investments in urban settings. It helps designing an appropriate PF scheme and understanding the advantages of PF to reduce risk and, consequently, increase the debt leverage and profitability of energy efficiency projects. Originality/value – This paper contributes to bridging the gap about the lack of works addressing the implementation of the PF mechanism in the energy efficiency sector in urban areas. The importance of this paper is also associated with the shortage of traditional public finance faced by many cities that forces to seek for alternate forms of financing.

In order to electrify the transport sector, scores of charging stations are needed to incentivize people to buy electric vehicles. In urban areas with a high charging demand and little space, decision-makers are in need of planning tools that enable them to efficiently allocate financial and organizational resources to the promotion of electromobility. As with many other city planning tasks, simulations foster successful decision-making. This article presents a novel agent-based simulation framework for urban electromobility aimed at the analysis of charging station utilization and user behavior. The approach presented here employs a novel co-evolutionary learning model for adaptive charging behavior. The simulation framework is tested and verified by means of a case study conducted in the city of Munich. The case study shows that the presented approach realistically reproduces charging behavior and spatio-temporal charger utilization.
