Sodium fluoroacetate residues and carcass degradation of free-ranging feral pigs poisoned with 1080

Sodium fluoroacetate (1080) residues in muscle and liver of free-ranging feral pigs, poisoned with 1080-treated grain in a range of habitats, were determined. The incidence of vomiting, and the degradation of poisoned carcasses were also monitored. The maximum recorded concentrations in muscle (n = 79) and liver (n = 16) were 2.42 and 4.28 µg g–1 tissue, respectively. Mean (±s.d.) concentrations were 0.702 ± 0.535 and 0.635 ± 1.091 µg g–1, respectively. Muscle concentration in pigs sampled within 24 h of death were similar between those pigs poisoned with wheat (0.993 µg g–1, n = 21) and malted barley (1.012 µg g–1, n = 20) (P > 0.05), but muscle residues may have been lower in those pigs poisoned with lupin bait (0.178 µg g–1, n = 3). Muscle concentrations were also lower in those pigs sampled 24–48 h after death (0.481 µg g–1, n = 13) (P = 0.004). There were no differences between the sexes (northern rangeland: mean, females 0.883, males 0.869 µg g–1; agricultural: mean, 0.420 and 0.324 µg g–1) (P > 0.05), but adult pigs had lower muscle concentrations than did non-adult pigs (P < 0.001). There was no evidence of vomiting by any recovered poisoned pigs (n = 85), and all but one stomach contained substantial amounts of bait and other foods. Scavengers (mainly raptors) rapidly consumed poisoned pigs weighing <16 kg, within 2 days with no apparent ill-effects. Poisoned adults (≥25 kg) were scavenged less frequently but, because of microbial action and the activity of invertebrates (e.g. fly larvae), these pigs were degraded within 7–10 days (i.e. no longer represented a potential food source for vertebrates). The levels of residues recorded were such that 1080-poisoned pig carcasses pose little potential risk to the long-term viability of non-target species.

Using Indian free-ranging dogs (FRD) as a case study, we propose a novel intervention of social integration alongside previously proposed methods for dealing with FRD populations. Our study subsumes population dynamics, funding avenues, and innovative strategies to maintain FRD welfare and provide societal benefits. We develop a comprehensive system dynamics model, featuring identifiable parameters customizable for any management context and imperative for successfully planning a widescale FRD population intervention. We examine policy resistance and simulate conventional interventions alongside the proposed social integration effort to compare monetary and social rewards, as well as costs and unintended consequences. For challenging socioeconomic ecological contexts, policy resistance is best overcome by shifting priority strategically between social integration and conventional techniques. The results suggest that social integration can financially support a long-term FRD intervention, while transforming a “pest” population into a resource for animal-assisted health interventions, law enforcement, and conservation efforts.

AbstractA dataset entitled “A potential risk index dataset for landfalling tropical cyclones over the Chinese mainland” (PRITC dataset V1.0) is described in this paper, as are some basic statistical analyses. Estimating the severity of the impacts of tropical cyclones (TCs) that make landfall on the Chinese mainland based on observations from 1401 meteorological stations was proposed in a previous study, including an index combining TC-induced precipitation and wind (IPWT) and further information, such as the corresponding category level (CAT_IPWT), an index of TC-induced wind (IWT), and an index of TC-induced precipitation (IPT). The current version of the dataset includes TCs that made landfall from 1949–2018; the dataset will be extended each year. Long-term trend analyses demonstrate that the severity of the TC impacts on the Chinese mainland have increased, as embodied by the annual mean IPWT values, and increases in TCinduced precipitation are the main contributor to this increase. TC Winnie (1997) and TC Bilis (2006) were the two TCs with the highest IPWT and IPT values, respectively. The PRITC V1.0 dataset was developed based on the China Meteorological Administration’s tropical cyclone database and can serve as a bridge between TC hazards and their social and economic impacts.

Breast cancer has been reported to have the highest survival rate among various cancers. However, breast cancer survivors face several challenges following breast cancer treatment including breast cancer-related lymphedema (BCRL), sexual dysfunction, and psychological distress. This study aimed to investigate the potential risk factors of BCRL in long term breast cancer survivors. A total of 160 female breast cancer subjects were recruited on a voluntary basis and arm lymphedema was assessed through self-reporting of diagnosis, arm circumference measurement, and ultrasound examination. A total of 33/160 or 20.5% of the women developed BCRL with significantly higher scores for upper extremity disability (37.14 ± 18.90 vs. 20.08 ± 15.29, p < 0.001) and a lower score for quality of life (103.91 ± 21.80 vs. 115.49 ± 16.80, p = 0.009) as compared to non-lymphedema cases. Univariate analysis revealed that multiple surgeries (OR = 5.70, 95% CI: 1.21–26.8, p < 0.001), axillary lymph nodes excision (>10) (OR = 2.83, 95% CI: 0.94–8.11, p = 0.047), being overweight (≥25 kg/m2) (OR = 2.57, 95% CI: 1.04 – 6.38, p = 0.036), received fewer post-surgery rehabilitation treatment (OR = 2.37, 95% CI: 1.05–5.39, p = 0.036) and hypertension (OR = 2.38, 95% CI: 1.01–5.62, p = 0.043) were associated with an increased risk of BCRL. Meanwhile, multivariate analysis showed that multiple surgeries remained significant and elevated the likelihood of BCRL (OR = 5.83, 95% CI: 1.14–29.78, p = 0.034). Arm swelling was more prominent in the forearm area demonstrated by the highest difference of arm circumference measurement when compared to the upper arm (2.07 ± 2.48 vs. 1.34 ± 1.91 cm, p < 0.001). The total of skinfold thickness of the affected forearm was also significantly higher than the unaffected arms (p < 0.05) as evidenced by the ultrasound examination. The continuous search for risk factors in specific populations may facilitate the development of a standardized method to reduce the occurrence of BCRL and provide better management for breast cancer patients.

A staticwork position with sitting is common work posture founded in industry, particularly small industry<br />in Indonesia. The problem that review in this paper is the activity of workers sitting static for processing<br />emping in Yogyakarta. Activity done by means sitting on the floor without using table. The activity carried<br />in a continuous long term, so as to cause disease risks muscle and bone especially lower back. Ergonomic work<br />facilities is implemented to solve the work problem with table and chair. The design of work table is developed<br />with concept low cost improvement and consider with secure, health, and convenience of worker. The design<br />process using participatory approach by involving worker to get best design. The result of facilities implementation<br />can be achieved a decrease ih the risk of work. The potential risk of work posture can be repair that<br />shown of the RULA score from 6 to 4, and no more complain the back and waist from worker activity.

Studies about bats biology encompassing diet, reproduction and parasitology are important to understand the role of these small animals in the ecosystem. However, few studies present such information. Therefore, the present paper was made to congregate information about biology of Phyllostomus hastatus, and compare the results between two urban parks at Rio de Janeiro City (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil): Parque Natural Municipal da Freguesia (PNMF) and Parque Estadual da Pedra Branca (PEPB), the latter being considerably larger than the other one. Long-term fieldworks were conducted in both areas and data on biometry, reproduction, parasites and diet were assembled. Animals were captured in mists nets and put in cotton sacs, from where fecal material was collected for further analysis. They were measured alive and inspected for reproductive stage; ectoparasites were collected and blood smears were made whenever possible. Bats were released at the end of the fieldwork. The feces and blood material were analyzed at the lab. Thus, 53 specimens of Phyllostomus were captured, 13 from PNMF and 40 from PEPB. We found individuals with smaller measurements at the most anthropized park – the Freguesia Park; reproduction occurred between September and December at both parks; diet included Curcubitaceae, Urticaceae, Bombacaceae, Lythraceae, Coleoptera, Lepidoptera, Hemiptera and Diptera. Concerning ectoparasites, Diptera and Acari were recorded; no haemoparasites were found in the blood smears. Although specimens from the smaller park seem to be most affected by anthropization, our results reinforce the idea that the creation of small parks is important for species maintenance, since it may serve as ecological corridor and as a food source for the animals.
