This article presents a novel set of ten play scenarios for robot-assisted play for children with special needs. This set of scenarios is one of the key outcomes of the IROMEC project that investigated how robotic toys can become social mediators, encouraging children with special needs to discover a range of play styles, from solitary to collaborative play (with peers, carers/teachers, parents etc.). The target user groups in the project were children with Mild Mental Retardation,1 children with Severe Motor Impairment and children with Autism. The play scenarios were developed against specific educational and therapeutic objectives that were discussed with panels of experts (teachers therapists parents) in various countries, during several user panel meetings for each of the above mentioned target user groups. These objectives were classified with reference to the ICF-CY, the International Classification of Functioning – version for Children and Youth. The article presents a detailed description of the play scenarios, each with its relevant educational and therapeutic objectives in five key developmental areas (i.e. sensory development, communication and interaction, Cognitive development, motor development and social and emotional development). While the play scenarios described in this paper originally were developed for and tested with the above user groups and with the IROMEC robot, the play scenarios can potentially be applied to other user groups and to a wide range of other applications involving human-robot interaction using different robotic toys. Keywords: human-robot interaction; assistive technology; play scenarios; autism; mild mental retardation; sever motor impairment; assisted play

In this article, we present a taxonomy in Robot-Assisted Training; a growing body of research in Human–Robot Interaction which focuses on how robotic agents and devices can be used to enhance user’s performance during a cognitive or physical training task. Robot-Assisted Training systems have been successfully deployed to enhance the effects of a training session in various contexts, i.e., rehabilitation systems, educational environments, vocational settings, etc. The proposed taxonomy suggests a set of categories and parameters that can be used to characterize such systems, considering the current research trends and needs for the design, development and evaluation of Robot-Assisted Training systems. To this end, we review recent works and applications in Robot-Assisted Training systems, as well as related taxonomies in Human–Robot Interaction. The goal is to identify and discuss open challenges, highlighting the different aspects of a Robot-Assisted Training system, considering both robot perception and behavior control.

Children with special needs are children who have different characteristics and limitations in ability. This child with special needs is called Tunagrahita. Developmental impairment is classified into three categories namely mild, moderate and severe. This study aims to help the process of identifying the characteristics of mental retardation experienced by children. This study uses the Case Based Reasoning (CBR) method to identify children with special needs using the data of the mentally disabled children in SLBN 1 Linggo Sari Baganti. Similarity results were 51.92% for moderate developmental impairment, 17.5% for mild developmental impairment and 8% for severe developmental impairment. Calculations are performed using Visual Basic Net 2010.

ABSTRACT Mental Retardation is a condition of mental development which stops or at uncomplete state, mainly signed by skill hindrance during development, phase it so takes effect on the level of intellegence ; cognitive skill, language skill, motoric skill and social skill. The purpose of this study was to determine the association between the parents’ role and the independence of the children mental retardation at State School for Children with Special needs Karya Ibu in Palembang. This study used a descriptive correlation method with cross sectional approach. The population in this study was the parents who had a child mental retardation in1-3 Grades at State School for Children with Special needs Karya Ibu in Palembang as many as 78 respondents. The samples in this study were the mothers who had a child with medium mental retardation in 1-3 in Grades State School for Children with Special needs Karya Ibu in Palembang as many as 26 respondents. The sampling technique used was purposive sampling. The study of the role of parents showed there is a connection the role of parents with mental retardation in the child's independence SLB Karya Ibu in Palembang Affairs. (p value 0,003 < α 0,05).
