Using the principles of Systemic Functional Grammar (SFG) as pioneered by Michael Halliday, this paper compares samples from speeches by John McCain and Barack Obama. Given the world-wide media coverage of the 2008 United States Presidential Election, it was thought to be both relevant and potentially informative to apply such an analysis in attempt to identify ideologies in the texts and to explore the significance of notable differences or similarities. It was discovered that both texts manage the experiential, interpersonal, and textual meanings in ways which provide clear indications of ideology.

Abstract The United States of America is currently experiencing some socio-political problems. These problems stem from myriad mythologies and assumptions that have created labels, categories, stereotypes, and generalizations. While they are not uncommon in many communities and societies all over the world, in the United States, they have exposed intense divisions, xenophobia, racism, White supremacy, and close-mindedness. To a large measure, we now live in fears and anger; and we are literally losing our soul as the greatest democracy in the world. Not surprisingly, our adversary, Russia took advantage of these mythologies to meddle in our 2016 democratic Presidential election. As a result, many are asking, Is there a there there? In this article, I respond to this question by looking into these mythologies. In addition, I suggest ways for educators and leaders to foster multicultural and global education and buttress human valuing and interactions at classroom, school, college/university, community, state, national, and world-wide levels.

Increasingly alone as a stable republican nation in Latin America, Chile has long been a favorite subject for North American scholars and journalists. Every six years, as it faces a presidential election, the world press breathlessly rediscovers that this long slim country confronts its public problems within the framework of a developed, democratic political system. When in 1964 Chile placed a young idealistic party in power behind Eduardo Frei, an unquestionably intelligent figure of austere but charismatic bearing, this country became a favorite model for the advocates of democratic reformism in Latin America and soon was receiving the highest United States foreign aid per capita in Latin America. Thus it came as a shock that the Chilean electorate could turn its back on Frei's administration in 1970 by favoring the rightist and Marxist candidates. For those who saw in the government of Frei a basic alternative to Marxist models for Latin America, the free election of an avowed Marxist as the President of Chile presents additional problems.

Abstract This study investigated Nowruz (Persian New Year) messages by Presidents Hassan Rouhani and Barack Obama in March 2016. The study critically analyzed the discourse of these two presidential messages and uncovered the hidden aspects of their ideologies, policies, and background worldviews. In doing so, an integrated version of Halliday’s systemic functional grammar (SFG) and critical discourse analysis (CDA) was used. The analysis of data included various linguistic dimensions (e.g. processes, modality, transitivity) of the messages and their statistics. Although results suggested that Obama intended to build a more intimate situation, both presidents tried to inspire a spirit of action, development and effort in their respective governments. The messages did not reveal considerable thematic differences, except some discoursal religious features expressed in Rouhani’s message.

Since French Anglicisms readily conjure up the Académie française, the introductory chapter presents purist views on Anglicisms, which tend to be implicitly political (Anglicisms as an allegory for the decline of French as an international language) and explicitly lexical (substitution of French words with English words). The raison d’être of this book was to provide an objective linguistic analysis that would test the myth, discussed here, that Anglicisms are lexical polluters, a myth magnified by the advent of the World Wide Web and the use of English as its lingua franca. The linguistic behavior of the resulting lexical items in the lexicon and morphology of French is the topic of this book, as, mainly because of this purism, linguistic research on these words has not been intensively pursued in France.

Current and future requirements of petroleum have produced a strong demand for American personnel, equipment and techniques to be employed in the world‐wide search for oil. Different, and sometimes much more difficult conditions are frequently encountered from those customarily met in the exploration for oil in the United States. A brief consideration of some of these factors is the purpose of this paper. It is concluded that while careful preliminary planning and the design of equipment in the light of accurate information on conditions to be encountered are highly vital factors, the demonstrated and trustworthy character of the personnel conducting the operations is the biggest guarantee of success in the undertaking.

This study examines Prabowo’s speech during the first national address of the 2019 pre-election campaign. It aims at revealing the types of modality, modal value, and modal responsibility employed in the speech, and describing how the choice of modality reflects Prabowo’s attitude and strategy to win the 2019 presidential election. This study is qualitative research that applies Halliday’s theory of modality in systemic functional grammar. The results reveal that 1) he used modulation inclination frequently to show his determination to help people, 2) the dominant use of median modal value in inclination reveals that rather than determined he is just keen to help, the domination of high modal value in obligation signified that he believes he has the power to make people follow his instruction, and the frequent use of low modal value in probability indicated that he is not certain about the information he shares, 3) the domination of subjective implicit subject shows that Prabowo tend to emphasize his dominance and superiority in the communication process, and he strongly believes that he can realize all his promises when he becomes the president and he is ready to take responsibility if he cannot.

This paper looked at the use of Twitter during the 2012 United States presidential campaign and the use of ethos appeals as a strategy to build credibility. As a new communication avenue, Twitter plays an unprecedented role in political discourse today. Both the Barack Obama and Mitt Romney campaigns have engaged in social media strategies and are actively using Twitter to communicate their talking points, and overall political platform. Larry Beason’s (1991) categories of signaled ethos were applied to examine a collection of tweets from each candidate. Sites like Twitter offer a more personal communication avenue for politicians to use. This paper discusses the strategic messaging on Twitter from politicians, and whether the messages contain ethos. The research questions explored are: to what extent are there ethos appeals on Twitter in the 2012 United States political candidates’ tweets? And, to what extent are particular ethos appeals prevalent? Of the 100 tweets examined from Barack Obama, the findings showed that 32% of his tweets contained ethos appeals, while 58% of the 100 tweets from Mitt Romney contained ethos appeals.

Most of us feel that our democratic lives have eroded. We are less civil to one another than at any other time in our history, perhaps short of the Civil War—certainly any period in my lifetime. At the 2020 Democratic National Convention, former President Barack Obama described the nation’s current situation in this way: “Our worst impulses unleashed, our proud reputation around the world badly diminished, and our democratic institutions threatened like never before.” Speakers at both parties’ conventions claimed that the 2020 election is a struggle for the soul of the United States.

Abstract Peter Carey’s short story American dreams (Carey 1994 [1974]) presents a recalibration of consciousness as a small Australian town gradually becomes Americanized. The text foregrounds epistemological concerns by demonstrating a clear tendency toward delayed understanding. For this reason, I argue that the story is an instance of modernist fiction: a label not previously applied to Carey’s stories. In contrast with popular modernist techniques such as free indirect discourse and stream of consciousness, the techniques presented in the text appear to be covert, which may at least partially explain why the story has managed to avoid being labelled modernist by literary critics until now. Using analytical tools grounded in systemic functional grammar and appraisal categories, I demonstrate how linguistic analysis can lay bare the covert modernist techniques at work in the story, indicating that such an approach can be a useful complement to non-linguistic literary criticism.
