This paper provides an elementary introduction to the one parameter psychometric model known as the Rasch model. It explains the basic principles underlying the model and the concepts of unidimensionality, local stochastic independence, and additivity in non-mathematical terms. The requirements of measurement procedures, the measurement of latent traits, the control on model fit, and the definition of a trait are discussed. It is argued that the Rasch model is particularly appropriate to understand the mutual dependence of test reliability and validity. Examples from foreign language listening comprehension tests are used to illustrate the application of the model to a test validation procedure.

Objective The purpose of this paper was to report on the first step in the development of a new instrument to measure participation including the full range of its characteristics. Methods The 30-item participation behavior questionnaire (PBQ) was developed from four main sources (a literature review of the theatrical basis of participation, available participation measures, and interviews with patients and experts about participation). Item selection and the reliability and validity of the measure were explored using Rasch measurement modeling for analysis. Participants A total of 404 individuals referred to rehabilitation after hand, wrist, or upper extremity surgery to reduce impairment from trauma, at least 2 months post-injury. Results An initial pool of 100 items; reflecting 14 characteristics of participation was initially reduced to 91 items after review by 15 participation experts and then further reduced to 30 items by three rounds of Rasch analysis removing misfitting items. The final PBQ has a person reliability of 0.91 with separation of 3.22, indicating it can reliably differentiate four levels of participation. There are no misfitting items and the instrument is unidimensional. All 14 characteristics of participation were retained in the PBQ, and none of the 30 items refer specifically to upper extremity issues. Conclusion The 30 participation behavior items of the PBQ show promise of being a psychometrically sound measure of participation. Further research is needed to validate the PBQ in samples of people with a range of other disabilities.

Abstract The research aims to examine the reliability and validity of a new personal fable scale in West Java adapted from Lapsley dkk. (1989). New Personal Fable Scale consists of 46 items with 3 dimensions:  invulnerability, omnipotence, and personal uniqueness. The subjects of this study were 489 adolescents in West Java. The Rasch Model analysis from summary statistics, scalograms, item measure, person measure, and dimensionality map shows that this scale’s model is a good fit. The convergent validity test shows that the new personal fable scale which is adapted to Bahasa is valid. Reliability with a Cronbach Alpha method is 0,8 which means this scale is reliable. The results indicate that there are several items that need to be improved. This research provides information about the psychometric properties of egocentrism in adolescent especially personal fable in West Java. <p>In using the Rasch model to improve the quality of an instrument, analysis purports to determine if the sample collaborates well with the items in the instrument such that the results are measuring a single underlying variable. The relevant properties of Rasch analysis are reliability and validity which are key indicators of the quality of a measurement instrument. This paper discusses the use of one type of Rasch model that is the Partial Credit Model to investigate reliability and validity of an instrument. By removing or changing items in the instrument when conditions of reliability and validity are not met, the quality of the instrument is improved.</p>

There are few tests in Brazil to evaluate the comprehension of oral language, especially the ones that are computer-based. Thus, this study aimed at investigating psychometric characteristics for a computer-based battery for Oral Language, Bilov3 using the Rasch Model. 569 children collectively answered BILOv3, which is constituted of 6 tests. A general analysis of the battery indicated that the test Completing Sentences was the one with the highest index of difficulty, whereas the test Completing Stories was the lowest. However, in the latter, there are difficult items regarding Morpho-syntactic Comprehension, Logical-Verbal Organization and Story Interpretation. As far as precision was concerned, the Kuder-Richardson coefficient varied from 0.80 to 0.97, which shows that the test is consistent. These results are evidences of validity and precision for BILOv3.

The present study addressed the issue of reliability and validity of scale through the comparison between the traditional method and the Rasch model, which is seen by statisticians as the best method to psychometrically validate the scale and test its properties. Researchers have demonstrated the failure of traditional statistical methods to take into account the characteristics of the items and people when testing the reliability of the scale as well as respondents. They usually turn to alpha Cronbanch to examine the internal consistency of the scale without taking into consideration that alpha Cronbanch has been affected by external factors such as the length of the scale. However, the Rasch model that is relatively considered to be modern statistics, is not affected by external factors especially the length of the scale, even a short scale might be more reliable than the long one. Moreover, the Rasch model can also be used to investigate various types of validities such as content validity, construct validity, and criterion validity. Interestingly, the Rasch model is also a powerful statistics tool used to determine the contribution of the items and people in the total reliability of the scale. For example, the variable map is used to examine the extent to which the items adequately target the respondents taking into account the difficulty of items and ability of the subjects. Nevertheless, the traditional methods normally calculate the uniqueness of the scale by focusing on the sum of squares and these methods do not offer standard errors for each item to determine the accuracy of the measurement. Hence, the researchers suggested in this paper that favorability of the Rasch model in testing scales’ reliability and validity was recommended compared to conventional statistical methods.

Abstract. The article discusses the emergence of a functional literacy construct and the rediscovery of illiteracy in industrialized countries during the second half of the 20th century. It offers a short explanation of how the construct evolved over time. In addition, it explores how functional (il)literacy is conceived differently by research discourses of cognitive and neural studies, on the one hand, and by prescriptive and normative international policy documents and adult education, on the other hand. Furthermore, it analyses how literacy skills surveys such as the Level One Study (leo.) or the PIAAC may help to bridge the gap between cognitive and more practical and educational approaches to literacy, the goal being to place the functional illiteracy (FI) construct within its existing scale levels. It also sheds more light on the way in which FI can be perceived in terms of different cognitive processes and underlying components of reading. By building on the previous work of other authors and previous definitions, the article brings together different views of FI and offers a perspective for a needed operational definition of the concept, which would be an appropriate reference point for future educational, political, and scientific utilization.

This book is an examination of Britain as a democratic society; what it means to describe it as such; and how we can attempt such an examination. The book does this via a number of ‘case-studies’ which approach the subject in different ways: J.M. Keynes and his analysis of British social structures; the political career of Harold Nicolson and his understanding of democratic politics; the novels of A.J. Cronin, especially The Citadel, and what they tell us about the definition of democracy in the interwar years. The book also investigates the evolution of the British party political system until the present day and attempts to suggest why it has become so apparently unstable. There are also two chapters on sport as representative of the British social system as a whole as well as the ways in which the British influenced the sporting systems of other countries. The book has a marked comparative theme, including one chapter which compares British and Australian political cultures and which shows British democracy in a somewhat different light from the one usually shone on it. The concluding chapter brings together the overall argument.

In this paper, Linear Quadratic (LQ) optimal control concepts are applied for the active control of vibrations in helicopters. The study is based on an identified dynamic model of the rotor. The vibration effect is captured by suitably augmenting the state vector of the rotor model. Then, Kalman filtering concepts can be used to obtain a real-time estimate of the vibration, which is then fed back to form a suitable compensation signal. This design rationale is derived here starting from a rigorous problem position in an optimal control context. Among other things, this calls for a suitable definition of the performance index, of nonstandard type. The application of these ideas to a test helicopter, by means of computer simulations, shows good performances both in terms of disturbance rejection effectiveness and control effort limitation. The performance of the obtained controller is compared with the one achievable by the so called Higher Harmonic Control (HHC) approach, well known within the helicopter community.
