Abstract The research aims to examine the reliability and validity of a new personal fable scale in West Java adapted from Lapsley dkk. (1989). New Personal Fable Scale consists of 46 items with 3 dimensions:  invulnerability, omnipotence, and personal uniqueness. The subjects of this study were 489 adolescents in West Java. The Rasch Model analysis from summary statistics, scalograms, item measure, person measure, and dimensionality map shows that this scale’s model is a good fit. The convergent validity test shows that the new personal fable scale which is adapted to Bahasa is valid. Reliability with a Cronbach Alpha method is 0,8 which means this scale is reliable. The results indicate that there are several items that need to be improved. This research provides information about the psychometric properties of egocentrism in adolescent especially personal fable in West Java.

This study took the relationship of self-confidence and body image to students at FKIP UMN Alwashliyah. In this case, self-confidence and body image as independent variables and personal fable as dependent variables. Adolescence is one of the stages in human life which is a period of transition from childhood to adulthood. At this stage adolescents will experience changes both physically, cognitively and psychosocial. In line with physical changes, young women tend to develop a high level of concern for their physical changes. The way adolescents perceive their physical condition will affect the level of their personal ability. With high trust and a positive body image will increase the personal level of the teenager. The objectives of this study were to determine: (i) the relationship between self-confidence and body image with personal fable in UMN AW students; (ii) The relationship between self-confidence and personal ability in UMN AW students; (iii) The relationship between body image and personal fable in UMN AW students. The research method used in this research is quantitative method with a sample of 2 classes from semester 2, each class totaling 30 people. Thus the data taken is in the form of a questionnaire, using Pearson Correlation analysis. Data analysis was performed using SPSS 23 for windows.

The objective of this study is, through the relevant literature review, to point out the associations between risk-taking behavior during adolescence and positive illusions about the self, that is imaginary audience and personal fable ideations. Positive illusions about the self and risky behavior in adolescence are usually investigated as a direct result of adolescent egocentrism. in this study we briefly describe the main theoretical approaches of positive illusions about the self. Moreover, research findings are presented on the mediating role of self-esteem in the relationship between positive illusions about the self (mainly personal fable) and risk-taking in adolescence. also, we discuss age and gender effects on the complex phenomenon of risk-taking and we focus on adaptive developmental functions of positive illusions about the self. in particular, we focus on the dual function of the personal fable ideation: the illusions of omnipotence and invulnerability either lead adolescents and young adults to risk-taking, or they contribute both to a positive self-image projection in the future and to individuals’ functional adaptation to new situations in their transition from adolescence to adulthood.

Lapsley’s (1993) “New Look” model for the interpretation of adolescentegocentrism, as an alternative to the classic cognitive one formulated by Elkind (1967), was tested in this study. According to the “New Look” model, the two manifestations of adolescent egocentrism – the imaginary audience and the personal fable – are adaptive coping mechanisms used by adolescents in their attempt to deal with the stressful developmental aim of separation-individuation. Two-hundred ninety seven adolescents 11-18 years’ old completed the Imaginary Audience Scale (Elkind & Bowen, 1979), the New Imaginary Audience Scale (Lapsley, Fitzgerald, Rice, & Jackson, 1989), the Personal Fable Scale (Elkind, personal communication, August 10, 1993), the New Personal Fable Scale (Lapsley et al., 1989), and the Separation-Individuation Test of Adolescence (Levine, Green, & Millon, 1986; Levine & Saintonge, 1993). The “New Look” model was generally supported by the data. The various dimensions of separation were significantly associated with the imaginary audience, whereas the dimensions of individuation had stronger links with the personal fable. In addition, some associations were found between the imaginary audience and individuation, as well as between the personal fable and separation. Consistent age and gender differences in the variables studied were found. Results are discussed in the framework of the literature on adolescent egocentrism and on parent-adolescent relations.
