The versatility of Low Temperature Field Emission SEM (LTFESEM) for viewing frozen-hydrated biological specimens, and the high resolutions that can be obtained with such instruments have been well documented. Studies done with LTFESEM have been usually limited to the viewing of small organisms, organs, cells, and organelles, or viewing such specimens after fracturing them.We use a Hitachi 4500 FESEM equipped with a recently developed BAL-TEC SCE 020 cryopreparation/transfer device for our LTFESEM studies. The SCE 020 is similar in design to the older SCU 020 except that instead of having a dedicated stage, the SCE 020 has a detachable cold stage that mounts on to the FESEM stage when needed. Since the SCE 020 has a precisely controlled lock manipulator for transferring the specimen table from the cryopreparation chamber to the cold stage in the FESEM, and also has a motor driven microtome for precise control of specimen fracture, we have explored the feasibility of using the LTFESEM for multiple-fracture studies of the same sample.

Temperature-field and orientational magnetization dependences of single crystals were measured. Both samples demonstrate significant field-depending temperature hysteresis and low-temperature counter field magnetization. The correlation of orientational dependences of these effects and magnetic anisotropy is analyzed; the role of spin-lattice interactions is discussed.

The paper presents the experimental and theoretical study for temperature distribution around the cooling pipes of an ice rink pad. The heat transfer in the skating rink track is nonstationary and phase changing. In case of skating rinks equipped with pipe registers, the temperature field during the ice formation process can’t be modeled by analytical methods. The experimental research was targeted on finding the temperatures in several points of the pad and also details on ice shape and quality around the pipes. The temperatures measured on the skating ring surface using thermocouples is impossible due to the larger diameter of the thermocouple bulb compared with the air-water surfaces thickness. For this reason we used to measure the temperature by thermography method, thus reducing the errors The experimental results were compared against the numerical modeling using finite elements.

For the first time, a method based on the registration of polarization and depolarization currents arising in wood in a non-uniform temperature field was used to study the properties of cellulose. The purpose of the method used is to record the relaxation of bound charges with a change in the temperature of the sample under study. It is shown that the detected low-temperature transitions have a crystal-crystal polarization mechanism, and the natural polymer cellulose is an active dielectric.

The most commonly used refrigerants are potent greenhouse gasses that can contribute to climate change. Hydro-Fluoro-Olefins are low Global Warming Potential fluids. A summary of our experimental research activity on the thermodynamic properties of two environmentally friendly Hydro-Fluoro-Olefins, namely R1234yf and R1234ze(E), is reported. In particular, the measurements were performed with an isochoric apparatus and the apparatus specifically built to reach temperatures down to about 100 K. The data elaboration confirms the validity of the choice and that R1234yf and R1234ze(E) can be adopted in many domestic applications. Moreover, considering the reduction of the flammability issues of R1234yf and R1234ze(E), the properties of binary systems containing these fluids and carbon dioxide were analyzed. The presented mixtures could be very interesting for low-temperature applications such as cascade cycles.

To eliminate the jump points of multipole angle values after subdivision at low temperature, the magnetic field and temperature field characteristics of a multipole magnetic encoder are analyzed in this study, and the effect of changes in magnetic field strength and temperature field on the precision of angle values is studied. To eliminate the jump point of multipole angle values caused by changes in the temperature field, the suppression method based on single-pole angle value fitting is proposed. The error between the single-pole and multipole angle values is tabulated by the oversampling linear interpolation method, and the precision of fitting single-pole to multipole angle values is effectively improved. The error of the angle value caused by changes in the temperature field is studied and analyzed, and the relationship between the jump angle values and the pole number of the multipole magnetic encoder is obtained. Furthermore, the jump point is compensated for by the jump range of the multipole angle values. Finally, the angle accuracy of the multipole magnetic encoder in a cryogenic chamber is experimentally verified. The experimental results show that the low-temperature jump point compensation method proposed for the multipole magnetic encoder in this paper can effectively suppress the jump of the angle values.
