The repellent activitie of Cinnamomum japonicum oil against Aedes albopictus were investigated. The main volatile chemical components of the oil were qualitatively studied. The main results are given as follows. Cinnamomum japonicum oil providing absolute protection against Ae. albopictus in laboratory and field for 2.33 ± 0.63 h, 3.85 ± 0.21 h at concentration of 1.5 mg/cm2, respectively. A total of 28 compounds were identified. The main components of the essential oil were borneoll (28.30%), 1,8-cCineole (20.98%), (-)-bBornyl acetate (6.65%), linalool (5.94%), (-)-.alpha.-terpinol (5.87%), caryophyllene oxlde (5.11%). The results indicates that Cinnamomum japonicum oil has a great potential to be developed into a ecofriendly mosquito repellent.

The mosquito Aedes aegypti is an epidemic vector of several diseases such as dengue fever and yellow fever. Several pesticides are used to control the mosquito population. Because of their frequent use, some mosquitoes have developed resistance. In the present study, we evaluated the synergistic mosquito-repellent activity of essential oils from Pelargonium radula, Syzgium aromaticum and Citrus aurantifolia against Aedes aegypti by using Y-tube olfactometer. The oils was subsequently analyzed by using GC–MS. These results clearly reveal that the essential oil of C. aurantifolia served as the most potent repellent agent against Aedes aegypti . The results indicate that three constituents; limonene (19.58%) followed by β–pinene (17.12%), geraniol (13.23%) which comprise a large proportion of the C. aurantifolia are likely responsible for the observed repellent activity.

Objective: The purpose of this research is to prepare a cinnamon bark essential oil gel preparation, determines the physical characteristic and physical stability during storage, and examines the activity of mosquito repellent from the best gel preparation. Methods: The formulations of gel were made with variations in the concentration of Carbopol 940 (0.5%, 1.5%, and 2%) contain 1% of cinnamon bark essential oil. The gel evaluated physical characteristics and physical stability. The parameters of organoleptic, homogeneity, and pH are analyzed descriptive, while the viscosity, the spreadability, and the gel adhesion were analyzed using one-way ANOVA at the level of confidence of 95%. The best gel tested its effectiveness as compared to the negative control and product innovator (which used DEET as an active compound) as a positive control. The activity of repellent was determined by an Aedes aegypti mosquito for 6 h with 2 hands respondents. The effectiveness of repellent protection is calculated by the percentage of protection power. Results: The studies showed that all the gel preparations qualified the organoleptic, homogeneity, and pH parameters. The viscosity, gel adhesion, and spreadability are also stable during storage. Conclusion: Based on the results, the best gel is the formula I which has mosquito repellent activity effective for 6 h like DEET.

Essential oil has complex chemical substances with a lot of benefit, one of them is as mosquitoe or insect repellent. This research aims to find out the best essential oil formula for mosquito repellent. Essential oils that used in this research are citronella, lemongrass, cajeput, and lavender oil. Essential oils are characterized by its color, density, refractive index, and solubility in alcohol. The essential oil colors met the SNI which was pale yellow to clear yellow, the density was 0.8125 - 0.9114 g/ml, the refractive index was 1.4568-1.4665 and soluble in alcohol. The essential oil mixture resulted in 7 series of formula, namely series A1-A5, B1-B5, C1-C5, D1-D5, E1-E5, F1-F5, and G1-G5. The organoleptic test performed on all formula showed that the preferred formula was the formula E3, G3, and F3. All preferred formula were carried out repellent tests against mosquitoes to determine the effectiveness of the oil mixture in Virgin Coconut Oil (VCO) carrier. The result showed that E3 was more effective repellent compare to F3 and G3 formulas, because it has protection value more than 90% until fourth-hour.

The essential oil (EO) of Lantana montevidensis (Spreng.) Briq. (L. sellowiana Link & Otto) was investigated for its chemical composition and mosquito repellent activity. The essential oil obtained by hydrodistillation of aerial plant parts was analyzed by GC-FID and GC-MS. The major constituents were β-elemene (22.0%), β-caryophyllene (20.1%), and germacrene D (9.4%). Sesquiterpene hydrocarbons were present in considerable quantities (78.9%) in the L. montevidensis EO, followed by oxygenated sesquiterpenes (8.9%), monoterpene hydrocarbons (7.7%), oxygenated monoterpenes (1.9%), diterpenes (1.2%) and other compounds (0.2%). The oil of L. montevidensis was repellent with a minimum effective dosage (MED) of 0.021 ± 0.013 mg/cm2 as compared with that of the positive control N,N-diethyl-3-methylbenzamide (DEET) with a MED of 0.006 ± 0.001 mg/cm2) against Aedes aegypti L. The major compound β-elemene was tested individually for its repellency and had a MED value of 0.23 ± 0.14 mg/cm2 (DEET was 0.008 ± 0.001 mg/cm2). This is the first report on the repellent activity of L. montevidensis EO and β-elemene using human-based in vivo assays against Ae. aegypti.

The chemical composition of the essential oil obtained from the leaves of Plectranthus incanus Link, with the yield of 0.6% (w/v), was analyzed by GC and GC/MS. A total of 16 constituents, representing 95.2% of the oil, were identified. The major components of the oil were fenchone (6.0%), piperitone oxide (32.4%), piperitenone (3.0%) and piperitenone oxide (41.5%). The repellent activity of the volatile oil at different concentrations was measured by the protection period against the bites of Anopheles stephensi and Culex fatigans. The tested oil had stronger repellent activity than citronella oil, which was used as a positive control. LC50 (30 min) for P. incanus oil against An. stephensi and C. fatigans were 23.8 and 19.6 ?l/L air, respectively, whereas LC50 of citronella oil were 31.7 and 31.0 ?l/L air. Thus, P. incanus may be regarded as a potential valuable source of chemicals that have strong mosquito repellent activity, and could be used for the preparation of mosquito repellent formulations.
