Currently, the carbohydrate-restricted diet is very popular. Atkins' book, Dr. Atkins' Diet Revolution, has sold millions in its more than 25 years of existence. His book promotes the carbohydrate-restricted diet, which focuses on the consumption of proteins and fats as primary calorie and energy sources, while severely restricting carbohydrates. However, when carbohydrates are restricted from the diet, the body's primary energy source is reduced considerably. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to compare the psychological responses to exercise of individuals when on a carbohydrate restrictive diet and when on a noncarbohydrate restrictive diet. For this study, 17 participants practiced a noncarbohydrate-restricted diet for three weeks and the carbohydrate-restricted diet for three weeks, while maintaining previous exercise habits. After each exercise session, the participants completed the Physical Activity Affect Scale, which measures Positive Affect, Negative Affect, Tranquility, and Fatigue. Simple one-way analyses of variance indicated significant treatment differences ( ps <.05) relative to Negative Affect, Positive Affect, and Fatigue. The results of the study indicate as predicted, that, when a person restricts carbohydrates from the diet, he will experience more fatigue, more negative affect, and less positive affect in response to exercise than those individuals who are not restricting carbohydrates.

Consistent evidence has been found on the relationship between food allergy (FA) and atopic dermatitis (AD) in some children. Food sensitization can be often found in these patients. Allergy should be confirmed, though, with a food challenge test (FC) before advising a restrictive diet which could be harmful for the patient. Younger children with AD frequently show sensitization to egg, milk or peanut, while older ones and adults are more often sensitized to environmental allergens such as house dust mites, moulds, animal dander or pollens. It is well known that a barrier disturbance plays a main role in the development of sensitization and allergy. Therefore, due to the early appearance of AD, preventive newborn skincare with emollients and early introduction of food appear to be very important to determine food tolerance.

As the 24 million individuals living with some form of dementia follow the course of the disease, they experience deterioration in cognitive and swallowing capabilities. The speech-language pathologist can guide the individual and his/her caregivers and family to support a safe intake and the least restrictive diet. This article will familiarize clinicians with feeding and swallowing techniques, as well environmental and physical recommendations to facilitate assessment and management of individuals with dysphagia and dementia. The goal is to ensure the individual with dementia can experience quality of life on a daily basis by focusing on one of the last remaining skills a person with dementia possesses: The ability to eat and enjoy food with both safety and dignity.

A previous study has shown that laser acupuncture is a useful healing method for the treatment of visceral postmenopausal obesity in combination with a low-calorie diet. We observe and evaluate the therapeutic effect of laser acupuncture in subjects of simple obesity with a non-restrictive diet protocol. Subjects included 73 women and 22 men with simple obesity and body mass indices ≥ 27 kg/m2. Daily energy intake recommendations for obese females and males were 1620.0 and 1894.2 kcal in average, respectively. The gallium aluminum arsenide Handylaser Trion was used to apply 0.25 J of energy to each of the following acupuncture points three times per week for four consecutive weeks: Stomach, Hunger, ST25, ST28, ST40, SP15, and CV9. The subjects' body weights and body mass indices were recorded before treatment, and four weeks after treatment, and the percent reduction in each parameter was calculated. Statistically significant reductions in body weight and body mass index were detected after four weeks of treatment. The mean reduction and mean percent reduction in body weight were 3.17 kg and 3.80% (p < 0.0001), respectively. The corresponding values for the body mass index were 1.22 kg/m2 and 3.78% (p < 0.0001), respectively. We concluded that laser acupuncture was found to exert a therapeutic effect on simple obesity by reducing both body weight and body mass index. Moreover, subjects showed good compliance with this comfortable and non-restrictive diet protocol.

This chapter examines the most representative pathological behaviors of the so-called feeding and eating disorders, with a particular attention to the psychopathological meaning of the different behaviors. These behaviors, including restrictive diet, binge eating, purging, or obsessive control of body shape are generally adopted to define the broad category of eating disorders. In particular, it is considered the trans-nosographic and dimensional approach to the eating disorder psychopathology, as most of the symptoms described in this chapter can be observed also in different psychopathological conditions. The chapter considers the subjective transformation in patients of the original meaning of food and alimentation into something negative and dangerous, adopting a phenomenological approach to eating disorders.

In an evaluation of the least restrictive diet for a patient without teeth, bedside and instrumental exams don't always tell the whole story.
