Nanoparticles of cerium oxide (CeO2) are synthesized with cerium (III) nitrates (Ce(NO3)3, 6H2O) by precipitation method in ammonium hydroxyl solution (NH4OH). The influence of several parameters such as nature of the solvent, synthesizing temperature and the calcination on the crystallite size is studied by XRD, TEM and BET methods. The results show that both calcinations and synthesizing temperature affect the particles size. Also, the nature of solvent has a great effect on the morphology of CeO2 nanoparticles.

Abstract This paper depicts Box-Behnken design (BBD) approach to optimize the performance and emission characteristics of adjustable compression ratio, single- cylinder diesel engine with nanoparticle-blended biofuel. Cerium oxide (CeO2) nanoparticles and diethyl ether (DEE) are mixed with neem methyl ester (NME) in corresponding ratios as per BBD experimental plan. Engine performance characteristics brake thermal efficiency (BTE), brake-specific fuel consumption (BSFC), and NOx, CO, HC, and CO2 emissions have been analyzed. To study the influence of input parameters, quadratic models are developed on each output response using analysis of variance (ANOVA). Desirability function approach has been used to optimize the performance of multi-response parameters. The results revealed that nanoparticles mixed blends of NME and DEE enhances the performance characteristics and reduce the harmful emissions.

The study on physicochemical properties of maltodextrin-coated cerium oxide nanoparticles was carried out. The surface structure and properties of CeO2 nanoparticles were investigated. The ability of CeO2 nanoparticles to perform the functions of catalase and peroxidase enzymes, as well as to inactivate hydroxyl radicals was shown.

This article reports the effect of pure CeO2 and Cu (1%, 3% and 5 mol %) doped CeO2 Nanoparticles (NPs) have been prepared by very simple and improved co-precipitation method. Synthesized NPs has been subjected to several analytical methods, viz. XRD, TEM and UV-Vis spectral analysis. XRD data analysis confirmed that face cubic structure and average size are found to be in the range 5-10nm. Particle size and morphological studies as observed from TEM exhibits almost identical cubical shaped particles with average size 5-8nm. The tuning of band gap energy has been observed from UV-Visible absorption spectrum of cerium oxide NPs upon Cu (1%, 3%, and 5mol %) incorporation. Degradation of the methylene blue (MB) through photocatalysis has been observed for pure and Cu (1%, 3% and 5 mol%) CeO2 nanoparticles under solar spectrum. In addition, pure and Cu (1%, 3% and 5 mol %) cerium oxide nanoparticles has also been subjected to antibacterial response using different strains.

Due to its excellent physicochemical properties, cerium oxide (CeO2) has attracted much attention in recent years. CeO2 nanomaterials (nanoceria) are widely being used, which has resulted in them getting released to the environment, and exposure to humans (mostly via inhalation) is a major concern. In the present study, CeO2 nanoparticles were synthesized by hydroxide-mediated method and were further characterized by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FESEM), Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDX), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), and X-ray Diffraction Spectroscopy (XRD). Human lung epithelial (Beas-2B) cells were used to assess the cytotoxicity and biocompatibility activity of CeO2 nanoparticles. 3-(4,5-Dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-Diphenyltetrazolium Bromide (MTT) and Live/Dead assays were performed to determine the cytotoxicity and biocompatibility of CeO2 nanoparticles. Generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) by cerium oxide nanoparticles was assessed by ROS assay. MTT assay and Live/Dead assays showed no significant induction of cell death even at higher concentrations (100 μg per 100 μL) upon exposure to Beas-2B cells. ROS assay revealed that CeO2 nanoparticles did not induce ROS that contribute to the oxidative stress and inflammation leading to various disease conditions. Thus, CeO2 nanoparticles could be used in various applications including biosensors, cancer therapy, catalytic converters, sunscreen, and drug delivery.
