Robust design is a multi-objective optimization framework for obtaining designs that perform favorably under uncertainty. In this paper robust design is used to redesign a highly loaded, transonic rotor blade with a desensitized tip clearance. The tip gap is initially assumed to be uncertain from 0.5 to 0.85% span, and characterized by a beta distribution. This uncertainty is then fed to a multi-objective optimizer and iterated upon. For each iteration of the optimizer, 3D-RANS computations for two different tip gaps are carried out. Once the simulations are complete, stochastic collocation is used to generate mean and variance in efficiency values, which form the two optimization objectives. Two such robust design studies are carried out: one using 3D blade engineering design parameters (axial sweep, tangential lean, re-cambering and skew) and the other utilizing suction and pressure side surface perturbations (with bumps). A design is selected from each Pareto front. These designs are robust: they exhibit a greater mean efficiency and lower variance in efficiency compared to the datum blade. Both robust designs were also observed to have significantly higher aft and reduced fore tip loading. This resulted in a weaker clearance vortex, wall jet and double leakage flow, all of which lead to reduced mixed-out losses. Interestingly, the robust designs did not show an increase in total pressure at the tip. It is believed that this is due to a trade-off between fore-loading the tip and obtaining a favorable total pressure rise and higher mixed-out losses, or aft-loading the tip, obtaining a lower pressure rise and lower mixed-out losses.

AbstractNatural frequencies and vibration modes of axial compressor blades are investigated. A refined mathematical model based on the usage of an eight-nodal curvilinear isoparametric finite element was applied. The verification of the model is carried out by finding the frequencies and vibration modes of a smooth cylindrical shell and comparing them with experimental data. A high-precision experimental setup based on an advanced method of time-dependent electronic interferometry was developed for this aim. Thus, the objective of the study is to verify the adequacy of the refined mathematical model by means of the advanced time-dependent electronic interferometry experimental method. The divergence of the results of frequency measurements between numerical calculations and experimental data does not exceed 5 % that indicates the adequacy and high reliability of the developed mathematical model. The developed mathematical model and experimental setup can be used later in the study of blades with more complex geometric and strength characteristics or in cases when the real boundary conditions or mechanical characteristics of material are uncertain.

For designing forging and die tooling for bulk forging a necessity in using the data of the geometry of the part produced arises. Obviously, the use as a data source for designing drawings of commonly applied in “manual alternate design” (without a computer) especially such complex parts as compressor blades is not perspective because of the complexity of developing theoretical contour specified by a point cloud. In this case the use of special tooling of direct modeling that provides changing the original model of the part developed by the designers is a perspective one. It should be taken into account during the process of forging and die tooling designing that it is necessary to register the special features of the technology, upon that, the technologist should be highly proficient in using the software. The work given describes the designing technique of gas turbine compressor blade with the account of using the potential of NX Siemens program.

Fouling of compressor blades is an important mechanism leading to performance deterioration in gas turbines over time. Experimental and simulation data are available for the impact of specified amounts of fouling on performance, as well as the amount of foulants entering the engine for defined air filtration systems and ambient conditions. This study provides experimental data on the amount of foulants in the air that actually stick to a blade surface for different conditions of the blade surface. Quantitative results both indicate the amount of dust as well as the distribution of dust on the airfoil, for a dry airfoil, as well as airfoils that were wet from ingested water, as well as different types of oil. The retention patterns are correlated with the boundary layer shear stress. The tests show the higher dust retention from wet surfaces compared to dry surfaces. They also provide information about the behavior of the particles after they impact on the blade surface, showing that for a certain amount of wet film thickness, the shear forces actually wash the dust downstream, and off the airfoil. Further, the effect of particle agglomeration of particles to form larger clusters was observed, which would explain the disproportional impact of very small particles on boundary layer losses.

This work presents results of the experimental fatigue analysis of the compressor blades. In the investigations the blade with the V-notch (which simulates the foreign object damage) was considered. The notch was created by machining. The blades during the fatigue test were entered into transverse vibration. The crack propagation process was conducted in resonance conditions. During investigations both the amplitude of the blade tip displacement and also the crack length were monitored. As the results of presented investigations both the number of load cycles to crack initiation and also the crack growth dynamics in the compressor blade subjected to resonant vibrations were determined. In the work the influence of crack size on the resonant frequency was also investigated.

Abstract To investigate the contact phenomenon between the blade tip and the abradable coated casing, a rig test was designed and built. This rig test fills the following constraints: simplification of the low-pressure compressor environment but realistic mechanical conditions, ability to test several designs in short time, at low cost and repeatability. The rig test gives the opportunity to investigate the behavior of different blade designs regarding the sought phenomenon, to refine and mature the phenomenon comprehension and to get data for the numerical tool validation. The numerical tool considers a 3D finite elements model of low-pressure compressor blades with a surrounding rigid casing combined with a specialized model to take into account the effects of the wear of the abradable coating on the blade dynamics. Numerical results are in good agreement with tests in terms of: critical angular speed, blade dynamics and wear pattern on the abradable coated casing.
