Waste engine oil bottom (WEOB) is a hazardous waste whose effect as an additive to CR+SBS modified asphalt is rarely studied. In this study, the CR+SBS asphalt binder was modified with WEOB in different concentrations (3, 6, and 9 wt%). The GC–MS and FTIR were performed to evaluate the chemical compositions of WEOB and WEOBCR+SBS asphalt. The results showed that the main constituents of WEOB were similar to the functional groups of asphalt, along with maleic anhydride (MAH). Pavement performance-related rheological tests such as RV, temperature sweep (TS), FS, MSCR, and BBR were carried out. Results show that WEOBCR+SBS-6 exhibited the best high- and low-temperature property, followed by CR+SBS-3 and CR+SBS-9. Fluorescence microscope (FM) test, bar thin layer chromatograph (BTLC) test, FTIR, and AFM tests were carried out to evaluate the micro-morphologies and modification mechanism. The analysis revealed increased trends in resin fraction as opposed to asphaltene fraction with the increase of WEOB content. FTIR analysis revealed that the amide groups in WEOBCR+SBS asphalt bonded to the free radicals of CR. Moreover, a modification mechanism was elaborated. WEOB strengthens the cross-linked structure of CR+SBS polymers, reacting with SBS to graft onto MAH-g-SBS, and the free radical of CR interacts with the amide group in WEOB to form a bond. In addition, the content of lightweight components and surface roughness of SBS specimens were in good correlation, which contributed to the rutting resistance and adhesion and self-healing performance.

Raw materials, such as SBS modified asphalt, graphite powder and crumb rubber were selected to blend with aggregate mixture to product electrically conductive asphalt concrete. Experimental results demonstrated the stress or strain had a great influence on the resistance of conductive asphalt concrete, which exhibited sensitive piezoresistivity. In fact, the piezoresistivity reflects the change in microstructure. The reason for piezoresistivity may involve proximity effect, microcrack and the dislocation of conductive paths due to shear strength of aggregates. With further study on the variation of the resistance, it is hopeful to explore the microstructure change of asphalt concrete under dynamic compressive stress. Therefore this new-style asphalt concrete has extensively practical foreground in fatigue damage testing, highway traffic intelligent monitoring and so on.

A type of high modulus asphalt was prepared by mixing modifier into SBS modified asphalt and used for confecting HMAC-16 high modulus asphalt concrete with finished product of modified asphalt from Liaohe oil field. This paper investigates pavement performance of high modulus asphalt concrete and its practical application in bridge pavement. Results obtained by application in practical project show that the high modulus asphalt concrete is provided with outstanding high-and-low temperature performance and water damage resistance which are suitable for bridge pavement.

This paper demonstrates a type of SBS modified asphalt which added 8% TPS as the mixture for bridge pavement. Four types of asphalt mixtures were designed for composing four types of material forms. The fatigue characteristics of different types of combination of materials are studied by three-point fatigue tests of small beams. Equations of fatigue characteristics are obtained based on the experimental studies. Results show that antifatigue characteristics of SMA13+AC16 are better than others, while the sensitive degrees of fatigue life of four composite structures are generally the same to stress level.

The paper investigates positive effects of three kinds of fibers on the performance of asphalt concrete mixture, which include mineral fiber (Fiberand®), lignin fiber and polyacrylonitrile (Dolanit@AS). The contrast experiments of AC-13 SBS modified asphalt mixture added fibers were carried out. The results reveal that the pavement performance can be improved remarkably if appropriate fibers are added into the asphalt mixture. The method of determining optimum mixture ratio was proposed on the basis of road performance of asphalt concrete. It is more reasonable to adopt comprehensive indicator containing stability and dynamic stability in determination of the optimum mixture ratio of asphalt concrete.

Low temperature cracking is one of the most common distress types in asphalt concrete pavements, particularly in cold regions. Many factors influence the behaviour of asphalt concrete pavements at low temperatures, such as the applied traffic load, environmental conditions and material characteristics. Asphalt binders are one of the primary factors that influence material properties. The purpose of this study is to compare the performance of two types of asphalt binders: styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS) modified asphalt binder and unmodified asphalt binder in resisting low temperature cracking. The study was conducted in Flagstaff, located at the area of Northern Arizona, in the United States. Asphalt samples were collected from the paving sections and were compacted and trimmed into small beams. Bending Beam Rheometer tests were performed, using the trimmed specimens at temperatures of -6°C, -12°C and -18°C. Based on the results of the study, it was concluded that, SBS modified asphalt binder performs better in resisting low temperature cracking, compared to the unmodified binder. Based on the study outcomes, it is recommended to use SBS polymer modified polymers in areas subjected to severe cold weather events to maximize the life span of asphalt concrete pavements.
