Raw materials, such as SBS modified asphalt, graphite powder and crumb rubber were selected to blend with aggregate mixture to product electrically conductive asphalt concrete. Experimental results demonstrated the stress or strain had a great influence on the resistance of conductive asphalt concrete, which exhibited sensitive piezoresistivity. In fact, the piezoresistivity reflects the change in microstructure. The reason for piezoresistivity may involve proximity effect, microcrack and the dislocation of conductive paths due to shear strength of aggregates. With further study on the variation of the resistance, it is hopeful to explore the microstructure change of asphalt concrete under dynamic compressive stress. Therefore this new-style asphalt concrete has extensively practical foreground in fatigue damage testing, highway traffic intelligent monitoring and so on.

Asphalt polymer has superior characteristics than conventional asphalt. Styrene Butadiene Styrene (SBS) is a polymer that has proven its performance in heavy traffic, but it must be imported and expensive. Crumb rubber have high potential to be used as an asphalt modifier. Asphalt modified crumb rubber has high viscosity and is not homogeneous, so that the utilization cannot be delayed. This reduces workability in the field. This study aims to obtain asphalt modified crumb rubber which is easier to use by adding materials that do not affect its performance. RejIRE is a low viscosity additive to restore the properties of bitumen on crumb rubber modified. Experiments were carried out by adding variations in RejIRE levels to crumb rubber modified asphalt to determine its characteristics. Continued investigation of the performance of hot paved mixtures for wearing courses compared to asphalt mixtures with Pen 60/70 asphalt and SBS modified asphalt mixtures. The result is the addition of 0.75% RejIRE on asphalt crumb rubber modification have high workability. Overall the performance of the mix with SBS modified asphalt is better, but the mixture of hot paved with modified asphalt crumb rubber has a resistance to permanent deformation superior to the other paved mixtures.

Abstract : Endurance of asphalt concrete pavement on traffic load and temperature depends on the type and composition of aggregates, asphalt and filler used. Many attempts have been made to improve the quality of the mixture, such as using modified asphalt. Modified asphalt made by mixing asphalt pen. 60/70 with addition material. In this research, we used crumb rubber as an aggregate substitute material on AC-BC mixture. This study aims to determine the influence of additional substitution of used crumb rubber. The first step of the research is to find the optimum asphalt content (OAC), then add the crumb rubber as an aggregate substitute material from 0%, 1%, 2%, 3%, 4% and 5% to the weight of the mixture. The results showed that the percentage of crumb rubber influenced Marshall parameters value, especially the value of stability, VIM and VMA at 5.285% asphalt content. The highest stability value was found in the mixture of 2% crumb rubber is 1128.48 Kg. The highest VIM value is in the 5% mixture of the used crumb rubber is 16.94%. The highest VMA value is in the 5% mixture of the used crumb rubber is 27.88% and the highest flow value is in the 5% crumb rubber mixture of 4.97 mm. However, in MQ value increase and decrease that happened very big. No big changes in the density and VFA values for all substitutions of crumb rubber. For the durability value of AC-BC mixture with crumb rubber variation 90% requirement only on crumb rubber 1%.Abstrak: Ketahanan perkerasan beton aspal terhadap beban lalulintas dan temperatur sangat tergantung pada jenis dan komposisi agregat, aspal serta filler yang digunakan. Banyak usaha telah dilakukan untuk meningkatkan kualitas campuran, salah satunya dengan menggunakan aspal modifikasi. Aspal modifikasi dibuat dengan mencampur aspal pen. 60/70 dengan bahan tambah. Pada penelitian ini bahan tambah yang digunakan adalah parutan ban karet bekas sebagai bahan pengganti agregat pada campuran AC-BC. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui pengaruh substitusi tambahan ban karet bekas sebagai bahan pengganti agregat. Tahapan awal penelitian adalah mencari Kadar Aspal Optimum (KAO), kemudian dilakukan penambahan parutan ban karet bekas sebagai bahan pengganti agregat mulai dari 0%, 1%, 2%, 3%, 4% dan 5% terhadap berat campuran. Dari hasil penelitian menunjukkan penambahan persentase parutan ban bekas mempengaruhi nilai parameter Marshall, terutama nilai stabilitas, VIM dan VMA pada kadar aspal 5,285%. Nilai stabilitas tertinggi didapat pada campuran 2% parutan ban bekas yaitu 1128,48 Kg. Nilai VIM tertinggi ada pada campuran 5% parutan ban bekas yaitu 16,94%. Nilai VMA tertinggi ada pada campuran 5% parutan ban bekas yaitu 27,88% dan nilai flow tertinggi ada pada campuran 5% parutan ban bekas yaitu 4,97 mm. Namun pada nilai MQ kenaikan dan penurunan yang terjadi sangat besar. Nilai Density dan VFA tidak terjadi perubahan yang besar untuk semua substitusi variasi parutan ban. Untuk nilai durabilitas campuran AC-BC dengan variasi parutan ban yang memenuhi persyaratan 90% hanya pada pemakaian parutan ban 1%.

Background: Moisture damage and aging take place together in asphalt binder as it is on road-pavement in service life and therefore quite difficult to overcome. Various techniques, such as crumb rubber, fibres, etc., have been applied to improve the behaviour of asphalt materials Use of nano materials was found as one of the effective techniques to develop temperature performances of asphalt binder. Methods: This study investigated moisture damage and aging of asphalt binder mixing with the carbon nano tubes (CNTs) using Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM). The base binder was primarily modified with 4% SBS polymer. Later on, CNTs were mixied in different percentages (i.e., 0.5%, 1%, and 1.5%) by weight with the 4% styrene–butadiene–styrene (SBS) modified binders. A special functionalized (-NH3) AFM probe with spring constant 3.44 N/m was utilised to complete the study. Results: The results were compared with 4% SBS modified asphalt with and without CNT addition.The adhesion forces of dry samples were found smaller as compared to wet and aged asphalt samples of with and without CNT. However, the adhesion forces of wet and aged samples with investigated percentage of CNT performed considerably better than those without CNT. Conclusion: This result clearly indicated significant improvement of asphalt to overcome moisture damage and aging owing to exposure in outdoor environment as a paving material. This study recommends any dosage (i.e., 0.5 to 1.5% by weight) of CNT with 4% SBS modified asphalt to resist moisture damage and aging in field.

A type of high modulus asphalt was prepared by mixing modifier into SBS modified asphalt and used for confecting HMAC-16 high modulus asphalt concrete with finished product of modified asphalt from Liaohe oil field. This paper investigates pavement performance of high modulus asphalt concrete and its practical application in bridge pavement. Results obtained by application in practical project show that the high modulus asphalt concrete is provided with outstanding high-and-low temperature performance and water damage resistance which are suitable for bridge pavement.

Crumb rubber modified (CRM) asphalt with crumb rubber of scrap tire has higher viscosity, better flexibility, outstanding anti-fatiguing and anti-aging properties. This paper mainly investigated material design and performance evaluation of CRM asphalt SMA mixture. Brookfield Viscosity test is used to ascertain the adoption of fiber in CR-SMA. Because of resilient volume swelling of asphalt rubber mortar, gap-coarse grade must be adopted in asphalt rubber concrete to provide enough free space. This paper amends material composition and grade proportions range of adapted CR-SMA depending on the special characteristic of CRM asphalt. After confirming best grade of CR-SMA, this paper adopted Marshall Method to design Job Mix Formula (JMF) of surface layer CR-SMA13 in Beijing airport south line expressway. The best CRM asphalt content and feasible gradation middle value were obtained by Marshall Test and volume parameter calculation. During performance evaluation phase, other two SMA usually used in Beijing region is added, including SBS modified asphalt SMA, Trinidad Lake asphalt (TLA) and SBS modified asphalt SMA. By evaluations of high temperature performance, low temperature performance, moisture sensitivity and so on. The results indicate that pavement performance of CR-SMA is excellent, and have no distinct difference compared with the other two SMA.
