The historical and cultural heritage, expressed in monuments, architectural structures, dedicated to the Great Patriotic War, today is significant. The purpose of the article is to determine the role of society in perpetuating the memory of the Great Patriotic War. The authors conclude that the events of World War II find a lively response from the public. At the same time, new tendencies in commemorative practices are traced - tragic pages of history that until recently were “uncomfortable” (and in Soviet times banned for research), such as human losses, extremely high mortality of the civilian population from hunger, forcibly transferred to special settlements, - began to be reflected in the construction of monuments, memorable places. The location of these monuments is specific - they were erected at a certain distance from public places, at the territories of churches (victims of famine, victims of political repressions), which is associated with the predicted ambiguity of their perception.

AbstractSand drifting on road networks in the region of the Lower Algerian Sahara is one of the main problems for the sector. Machines are repeatedly deployed to overcome this phenomenon. The long experience acquired while dealing with the removal of sand from roads pushed us to focus on obstacles called “Draas”. The purpose of this study is to perform an optimization of these special protective structures called “Draas”, using a reduced physical model. Model tests were performed in flow channel. The principle of modeling the wind transport using a reduced model is to simulate the wind using a liquid stream while respecting the laws of hydraulic and sedimentological similarity. The results obtained are extrapolated to make a normal size prototype.

This article is devoted to the systematization and critical analysis of the experience of various countries of the world in organizing the population evacuation from areas of various techno-logical disasters: accidents at radiation-hazardous objects and chemical facilities, as well as dam failures. The article provides an assessment of the role of public notification about the danger, speed and awareness of decision-making by the responsible authorities, prepared-ness of the infrastructure for transportation and resettlement of a large number of people in successful evacuation and minimization of human losses and the number of injured. A distin-guishing feature of technological disasters is the suddenness of the deployment due to the predominant impact of the human factor. In this connection, recommendations are given re-garding the need for preventive preparation of the population and infrastructure for potential disasters in threatened areas.

The review examines three new monographs that focus on the sedentarization and collectivization of nomad Kazakhs at the turn of the 1930s. The American historian Sarah Cameron, the German historian Robert Kindler, and the Russian historian Fyodor Sinitsyn describe the main specifics of nomadism in the steppes of Central Asia, study the premises of the Soviet policy aimed at its liquidation, and elaborate on the consequences of that policy, including armed resistance, mass hunger, and mass flight. All three authors conclude that this policy was implemented most radically, involved active violence, and was attended by huge economic and human losses. However, the scholars refuse to classify those losses as ethnic genocide. The review discusses the structure, key arguments, and conclusions of the monographs. It also provides a comparative analysis of varying descriptions and explanations of the tragedy in Kazakhstan, particularly focusing on who was primarily responsible for the events, the role of the ideology and pragmatic objectives in the policy of sedentarization and collectivization, and the link between that policy and Soviet nation-building.

AbstractWhitehouse adapts insights from evolutionary anthropology to interpret extreme self-sacrifice through the concept of identity fusion. The model neglects the role of normative systems in shaping behaviors, especially in relation to violent extremism. In peaceful groups, increasing fusion will actually decrease extremism. Groups collectively appraise threats and opportunities, actively debate action options, and rarely choose violence toward self or others.

AbstractIntuitions guide decision-making, and looking to the evolutionary history of humans illuminates why some behavioral responses are more intuitive than others. Yet a place remains for cognitive processes to second-guess intuitive responses – that is, to be reflective – and individual differences abound in automatic, intuitive processing as well.

Abstract Tomasello offers a compelling account of the emergence of humans’ sense of obligation. We suggest that more needs to be said about the role of affect in the creation of obligations. We also argue that positive emotions such as gratitude evolved to encourage individuals to fulfill cooperative obligations without the negative quality that Tomasello proposes is inherent in obligations.
