This paper aims to investigate the effect of IT-strategy alignment, responsiveness, operational flexibility, and business relationship on sustainable competitive advantage and the mediating effect of responsiveness, operational flexibility, and business relationship in relationships between IT-strategy alignment and sustainable competitive advantage. Data were collected from 189 Batik SME in Pekalongan and analyzed by using Structural Equation Modeling (SEM). The result shows that IT-strategy alignment significantly affects responsiveness. Responsiveness, operational flexibility, and also business relationship significantly affect sustainable competitive advantage. Furthermore, responsiveness, operational flexibility, and business relationship mediate the correlation of IT-strategy alignment and sustainable competitive advantage. Responsiveness, operational flexibility, and business relationship have the confidence and value that puts customers on every business decision. It encourages Batik SME to improve the sustainable competitive advantage based on the customers’ expectations. IT-strategy alignment is essential to enhance responsiveness, operational flexibility, and business to gain a sustainable competitive advantage. That IT-strategy alignment can improve the sustainable competitive advantage of the Batik SME.

Purpose This study aims to assess the mediating effect of sustainable competitive advantage (SCA) on the relationship between organisational innovativeness (OI) and performance of small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) operating in Konya, Turkey. Design/methodology/approach A survey method is used to collect the necessary data for this research. A total of 264 respondents from 83 SMEs partook in the study. In choosing the sample size, both purposive sampling and simple random techniques are used. The data gathered are analysed using SPSS program and Hayes PROCESS macro v.3.4.1. Findings The results of the analyses reveal that OI has a statistically significant positive effect on SCA and firm performance (FP). Moreover, SCA is found to have a mediating effect on the relationship between OI and FP. Practical implications Policymakers and management of SMEs need to show great commitment to innovativeness and relate it to SCA to create superior customer value, thereby leading to a holistic and long-term FP. Originality/value This study brings to the fore empirical evidence on how SCA serves as a mediator between OI and FP. It also contributes to the literature by focusing on three distinct but related variables. The study makes theoretical contribution by highlighting the role of the resource-based theory in enhancing business performance and SCA through strategic internal resources and innovative activities.

Those of us who contributed to the Journal of Management’s 1991 special issue on a resourcebased view of the firm began with the assumption that it is possible for a firm to gain and maintain a sustainable competitive advantage. Based on that general premise, we presented various arguments suggesting that a firm’s resources represent a major source of that potential advantage. Ten years later, I begin this revisit of my identity-based view of sustainable advantage by questioning our premise that it is possible to gain a sustainable advantage based on any particular core competency, no matter how inimitable. I then review what we have learned during the past decade about organizational identities and identification and their role in creating and destroying a firm’s temporary competitive advantages.

Business Process Management or BPM is the blueprint of how work is performed in any organisation to deliver customer requirements. Sustainable Competitive Advantage or SCA pushes organisations to adopt flexibility and dynamism into their systems, processes and culture. A study was carried out to determine the influence of BPM on SCA, and to identify the antecedents of BPM in creating SCA. One of the antecedents’ of the study was IT capability. The study was based on organisations in Malaysia. The results from the study revealed that IT capability failed to observe significant relationship to BPM and SCA. In an attempt to understand further this phenomenon, a series of interviews were carried out on 3 companies representing the telecommunications, consulting and manufacturing industries. The findings revealed that while IT capability is a “must-have”, there are numerous factors that may influence or hinder the effectiveness of IT capability implementation.

This study explores the effects of organizational information technology (IT) capability in determining organizational performance and sustainable competitive advantage. Building on the resource-based and knowledge-based views of a firm, the study proposes a theoretical framework. In this framework, organizational IT capability is theorized to strengthen organizational performance and sustainable competitive advantage, directly and indirectly, through organizational knowledge management capabilities. Data collected from the middle and senior managers of diverse organizations in an emerging economy have been used to test the relationships in the framework. To estimate the proposed relationships in the conceptual model, we use structural equation modeling through SmartPLS 3.2. The results confirm that organizational IT capability significantly impacts organizational performance and sustainable competitive advantage. Additionally, organizational knowledge management capabilities partially mediate the relationship between IT capability and the outcomes (i.e., organizational performance and sustainable competitive advantage). The study concludes with a discussion of the implications for academicians and managers.
