Sport for development research increasingly seeks to move beyond a focus on evidence of sport for development outcomes to better understand the mechanisms and contexts that underpin these outcomes. Building on recent innovations in micro-sociology, which highlight the role of emotions and bodily entrainment in face-to-face interactions, this paper critically examines, and aims to progress, efforts to open the ‘black box’ of sport for development outcomes and impacts. The authors argue that the theoretical and methodological merits of radical micro-sociology, and interaction ritual theory in particular, enable important advances in the field of sport for development. The paper proposes micro-sociological questions and practical directions for sport for development research but also outlines the limitations of this approach.

AbstractThis study analyzes the use of humor in specific political contexts following different linguistic perspectives that deal with politeness (Leech, Principles of pragmatics, Longman, 1983; Brown and Levinson, Politeness: Some universals in language use, Cambridge University Press, 1987; Fraser, Journal of Pragmatics 14: 219–236, 1990; Givón, English grammar: A function-based introduction, John Benjamins, 1993) under a “social practices” view (Chouliaraki and Fairclough, Discourse in late modernity: Rethinking critical discourse analysis, Edinburg University Press, 1999; Harri, Discourse & Society, 12: 451–472, 2001). Humor is not inherently polite or impolite, but rather, it can be viewed as a discursive strategy used by the speaker to achieve a particular goal in a particular context. However, the speaker is not completely free. S/he is conditioned by certain social and cultural factors that are not negotiable. The main aim of this study is to arrive at some of these cultural factors through the analysis of the use of humor and its application to the concept of face (Goffman, Interaction ritual: Essays in face to face behaviour, Doubleday, 1967; Brown and Levinson, Politeness: Some universals in language use, Cambridge University Press, 1987) in the context of a Parliamentary debate in Spain and Great Britain on a common topic: domestic violence.

While there is extensive literature on both the expansion of human rights and solidarity movements, and on micro-solidarity and violent actions, here I ask what is the relationship between human rights, micro-solidarity and social action? Based on a case study of structured, face-to-face dialogue group encounters in the Israeli/Palestinian context, I draw on Randall Collins’s interaction ritual chain theory to demonstrate why emotional energy and the ritualization of historical narratives have very limited potential to translate into human rights-based moral actions. Instead, I suggest, these encounters produce micro-solidarity that ascribes additional weight to ethnic categories, serving to polarize and homogenize groups along ethnic lines.

Children with Rett Syndrome (RS) are reported to use multiple modalities to communicate although their intentionality is often questioned (Bartolotta, Zipp, Simpkins, & Glazewski, 2011; Hetzroni & Rubin, 2006; Sigafoos et al., 2000; Sigafoos, Woodyatt, Tuckeer, Roberts-Pennell, & Pittendreigh, 2000). This paper will present results of a study analyzing the unconventional vocalizations of a child with RS. The primary research question addresses the ability of familiar and unfamiliar listeners to interpret unconventional vocalizations as “yes” or “no” responses. This paper will also address the acoustic analysis and perceptual judgments of these vocalizations. Pre-recorded isolated vocalizations of “yes” and “no” were presented to 5 listeners (mother, father, 1 unfamiliar, and 2 familiar clinicians) and the listeners were asked to rate the vocalizations as either “yes” or “no.” The ratings were compared to the original identification made by the child's mother during the face-to-face interaction from which the samples were drawn. Findings of this study suggest, in this case, the child's vocalizations were intentional and could be interpreted by familiar and unfamiliar listeners as either “yes” or “no” without contextual or visual cues. The results suggest that communication partners should be trained to attend to eye-gaze and vocalizations to ensure the child's intended choice is accurately understood.
