We consider target space duality transformations for heterotic sigma models and strings away from renormalization group fixed points. By imposing certain consistency requirements between the T-duality symmetry and renormalization group flows, the one-loop gauge beta function is uniquely determined, without any diagram calculations. Classical T-duality symmetry is a valid quantum symmetry of the heterotic sigma model, severely constraining its renormalization flows at this one-loop order. The issue of heterotic anomalies and their cancellation is addressed from this duality constraining viewpoint.

Abstract Motivated by recent advances in Donaldson-Thomas theory, four-dimensional $$ \mathcal{N} $$ N = 4 string-string duality is examined in a reduced rank theory on a less studied BPS sector. In particular we identify candidate partition functions of “untwisted” quarter-BPS dyons in the heterotic ℤ2 CHL model by studying the associated chiral genus two partition function, based on the M-theory lift of string webs argument by Dabholkar and Gaiotto. This yields meromorphic Siegel modular forms for the Iwahori subgroup B(2) ⊂ Sp4(ℤ) which generate BPS indices for dyons with untwisted sector electric charge, in contrast to twisted sector dyons counted by a multiplicative lift of twisted-twining elliptic genera known from Mathieu moonshine. The new partition functions are shown to satisfy the expected constraints coming from wall-crossing and S-duality symmetry as well as the black hole entropy based on the Gauss-Bonnet term in the effective action. In these aspects our analysis confirms and extends work of Banerjee, Sen and Srivastava, which only addressed a subset of the untwisted sector dyons considered here. Our results are also compared with recently conjectured formulae of Bryan and Oberdieck for the partition functions of primitive DT invariants of the CHL orbifold X = (K3 × T2)/ℤ2, as suggested by string duality with type IIA theory on X.

Starting from the self-dual “triplet” of gravitational instanton solutions in Euclidean gravity, we obtain the corresponding instanton solutions in string theory by making use of the target space duality symmetry. We show that these dual triplet solutions can be obtained from the general dual Taub-NUT de Sitter solution through some limiting procedure as in the Euclidean gravity case. The dual gravitational instanton solutions obtained here are self-dual for some cases, with respect to certain isometries, but not always.

We present surprisingly simple closed-form solutions for electric fields and electric potentials at arbitrary position ( x ,   y ) within a plane crossed by infinitely long line charges at regularly repeating positions using angular or elliptic functions with complex arguments. The lattice sums for the electric-field components and the electric potentials could be exactly solved, and the duality symmetry of trigonometric and lemniscate functions occurred in some solutions. The results may have relevance in calculating field configurations with rectangular boundary conditions. Several series related to Gauss’s constant are presented, established either as corollary results or via parallel investigations conducted in the spirit of experimental mathematics.
