Abstract Aluminium alloys are used in spacecraft and aerospace industries because of their unique properties which are lightweight and high strength. The components of aluminium alloys used in aerospace and space environment are subjected to relative motion which results in the tribo-phenomenon. The designer needs tribo response data for designing components geometrical dimensions. The literature reports inadequate tribo response data, more particularly in a vacuum environment (adverse environment). In the present investigation, experiments were conducted using Al 6061 aluminium alloy pins with different diameters. The cylindrical pin diameters were 2mm, 4mm and 6 mm. The cylindrical pins were slid against a hardened En-8 steel disc. The normal pressure was maintained at 0.625 MPa and the sliding speed was 0.5 ms-1. The estimated friction coefficient from monitored frictional force and normal force and the dependency of estimated friction coefficient on sliding distance for cylindrical pins of different diameters were analysed.

This work presents a new understanding on the deformation mechanics involved in the Nakajima test, which is commonly used to determine the forming limit curve of sheet metals, and is focused on the interaction between the friction conditions and the deformation behaviour of a dual phase steel. The methodology is based on the finite element analysis of the Nakajima test, considering different values of the classic Coulomb friction coefficient, including a pressure-dependent model. The validity of the finite element model is examined through a comparison with experimental data. The results show that friction affects the location and strain path of the necking point by changing the strain rate distribution in the specimen. The strain localization alters the contact status from slip to stick at a portion of the contact area from the pole to the necking zone. This leads to the sharp increase of the strain rate at the necking point, as the punch rises further. The influence of the pressure-dependent friction coefficient on the deformation behaviour is very small, due to the uniform distribution of the contact pressure in the Nakajima test. Moreover, the low contact pressure range attained cannot properly replicate real contact condition in sheet metal forming processes of advanced high strength steels.

Abstract Bolted connection is one of the most widely used mechanical connections because of its easiness of installation and disassembly. Research of bolted joints mainly focuses on two aspects: high precision tightening and improvement of anti-loosening performance. The under-head bearing friction coefficient and the thread friction coefficient are the two most important parameters that affect the tightening result of the bolted joint. They are also the most critical parameters that affect the anti-loosening performance of the bolted joint. Coulomb friction model is a commonly used model to describe under-head bearing friction and thread friction, which considers the friction coefficient as a constant independent of normal pressure and relative sliding velocity. In this paper, the viscous effect of the under-head bearing friction and thread friction is observed by measuring the friction coefficient of bolted joints. The value of the friction coefficient increases with the increase of the relative sliding velocity and the decrease of the normal pressure. It is found that the Coulomb viscous friction model can better describe the friction coefficient of bolted joints. Taking into account the dense friction effect, the loosening prediction model of bolted joints is modified. The experimental results show that the Coulomb viscous friction model can better describe the under-head bearing friction coefficient and thread friction coefficient. The model considering the dense effect can more accurately predict the loosening characteristics of bolted joints.

Most previous studies of boundary lubrication have ignored the contribution of surface roughness to friction. However, recent work by Moalic et al. (1987) has shown that when asperity contacts can be modelled by a slip line field, there is a precise relation between the friction coefficient and the asperity slope. Here, it is shown that there is also a relation between the friction coefficient and the normal pressure for rough surfaces which can be predicted from a development of the slip line field model.

After modifying the Wahime/Bay friction model, a new friction model suitable for micro-forming process without lubrication is established. In this model, it is shows that the friction coefficient is a function of strain hardening exponent, the normal pressure and the initial yield stress of material. Based on the experimental data, the micro-upsetting process is simulated using the proposed friction model. The simulation results are used to investigate the size effect on the dry friction behavior. It is found that the Coulomb’s friction coefficient is dropping with miniaturization of specimens when the amount of reduction is not too large.

The Navarro-Rios micromechanical model was used to assess the bounds of two different damage zones: crack arrest region and crack propagation region of controlled shot peening (CSP) of high strength aluminium alloys. Performance of CSP in terms of fatigue resistance was investigated. This comparison indicated that CSP in terms of fatigue depends on the competition between its beneficial and detrimental products, i.e. surface roughness and compressive residual stresses respectively. The gathered information can be used for safe load determinations in design.

In order to achieve the precision bending deformation, the effects of process parameters on springback behaviors should be clarified preliminarily. Taking the 21-6-9 high-strength stainless steel tube of 15.88 mm × 0.84 mm (outer diameter × wall thickness) as the objective, the multi-parameter sensitivity analysis and three-dimensional finite element numerical simulation are conducted to address the effects of process parameters on the springback behaviors in 21-6-9 high-strength stainless steel tube numerical control bending. The results show that (1) springback increases with the increasing of the clearance between tube and mandrel Cm, the friction coefficient between tube and mandrel fm, the friction coefficient between tube and bending die fb, or with the decreasing of the mandrel extension length e, while the springback first increases and then remains unchanged with the increasing of the clearance between tube and bending die Cb. (2) The sensitivity of springback radius to process parameters is larger than that of springback angle. And the sensitivity of springback to process parameters from high to low are e, Cb, Cm, fb and fm. (3) The variation rules of the cross section deformation after springback with different Cm, Cb, fm, fb and e are similar to that before springback. But under same process parameters, the relative difference of the most measurement section is more than 20% and some even more than 70% before and after springback, and a platform deforming characteristics of the cross section deformation is shown after springback.
