Abstract Fly ash has received a lot of attention as a possible support for aluminium alloy composites (AMCs) to improve characteristics while lowering production costs. Al alloy MMC was made with different amounts of fly ash (2, 5, and 8%). The semi-solid state mould was gradually filled with reinforced particles. The optical microscope investigation of the microstructure of AMCs reveals homogenous fly ash dispensation. With the increase in fly ash particulate, the microstructure with refined composition displays reducing Si-needle structure and extending space of eutectic-Al grid space. While hardness increases by 88 percent, tensile strength increases by 57 percent and yield strength by 17 % of the AMCs with the increment of fly ash. The addition of fly ash particles improved the AMCs’ physical and mechanical qualities. As a result, it leads to upgrade the energy utilisation.

This paper presents the characterization of A356 composite reinforced with fly ash and basalt ash produced by stir casting method. Aluminium metal matrix composites (AMC) are used in wide variety of applications such as structural, aerospace, marine, automotive etc. Stir casting is cost effective manufacturing process and it is useful to enhance the attractive properties of AMCs. Three sets of hybrid AMC are prepared by varying the weight fraction of the reinforcements (3% basalt + 7% fly ash, 5% basalt + 5% fly, 7% basalt + 3% fly ash). The effect of reinforcements on the mechanical properties of the hybrid composites such as hardness, tensile, compressive and impact strength were studied. The obtained results reveal that tensile, compressive and impact strength was increased when weight fraction of fly ash increased, whereas the hardness increases when weight fraction of the basalt ash increased. Microscopic study reveals the dispersion of the reinforcements in the matrix.

Nano-fly ash particles reinforced Al-10wt%Mg alloy matrix composites produced by stir-casting method were tested for their ageing response. Ageing studies were performed at 160 °C, 200 °C and 240 °C temperatures and a maximum peak hardness of 142 VHN was observed during ageing at 200 °C for the composite with 10 wt% nano fly ash reinforcement. This is due to rapid nucleation and growth of βI particles at this temperature. Experiments were designed for different compositions and different ageing temperatures on the basis of the Design of Experiments technique. The factorial design is considered to improve the reliability of results and to reduce the size of experimentation without loss of accuracy. A model to predict the ageing behaviour of the composites was developed with the terms of 5, 10 and 15% weight fraction of fly ash at 160 °C, 200 °C and 240 °C ageing temperatures. The developed regression model was validated by statistical software MINITAB-R17.1.0. It was found that the developed regression model could be effectively used to predict the ageing behavior at 95% confidence level.

In this study, semi-solid Al-Mg-Si alloy (AC4C) was produced by using the Gas Induced Semi-Solid (GISS) die casting process. The tensile strength and ductility of the semi-solid die cast Al alloy (GISS-DC) after T6 heat treatment were investigated and compared with those of the conventional liquid die casting (CLDC). The microstructures of GISS-DC and CLDC observed by an optical microscopy were presented. The ultimate tensile strength (UTS) and yield strength (0.2% YS) of GISS-DC are compatible with those of the CLDC. However, the GISS-DC has better ductility than the CLDC, this may be due to the smaller and more globular primary α-Al phase and rounder shaped-Si particle microstructures presented in the GISS-DC. Common shrinkage pores and defects were also observed by SEM from the fracture surfaces of both alloys.

Semi-solid 2024 Al alloys with strontium (Sr) addition of 0.15 wt% and 0.3 wt% were prepared by Gas Induced Semi-Solid (GISS) process. Effect of Sr addition on the microstructure and mechanical properties of the semi-solid 2024 alloy was investigated. It was found that the tensile strength and % elongation of the T6 heat treated alloy with the Sr addition were higher than those without Sr addition owing to the reduction of Mg2Si phase formation. The semi-solid 2024 Al alloy with 0.15%Sr addition obtained the average highest tensile strength of 382 MPa and elongation of 6.45%.

Composite materials are defined as material systems consisting of mixture of or combination of two or more micro constituents insoluble in each other and differing in form and or material composition. In this study Metal Matrix Composite (MMCs) has been produced using stir casting method for performing the mechanical properties. Most of the engineering industries want light and better mechanical properties of components; this can be achieved by MMCs of Aluminium because of its excellent performance. In this research work we fabricate the Aluminium by liquid route. Here Al 7075 is used as a base metal and Multi Walled Carbon Nanotubes (MWCNT) used as sub metal with various percentages. Experiments were conducted to analyze microstructure, hardness & tensile strength. By using optical microscope and Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) we analyze the sample specimens are well dispersion in MWCNT with AA 7075. Hardness and tensile strength increases with increasing of wt. %. Hardness of material increases with increase in percentages of MWCNT, whereas tensile strength of the material increases with increase in percentages of MWCNT and Elongation reduces
