Abstract At present, mobile devices generally use GPS, Beidou and other satellite time service methods to obtain time, but the clock synchronization based on IEEE 1588 protocol still has deviation. To solve this problem, a clock synchronization method is proposed to improve IEEE 1588 protocol. Based on the analysis of IEEE 1588 protocol, the clock deviation and frequency deviation which affect the synchronization accuracy are modeled. The second-order Kalman filtering algorithm is used to recursively deduce the clock deviation and frequency deviation, and the Allan variance is used to verify the noise characteristics and constantly correct the clock deviation. Finally, the improved effect is verified by relevant experiments. The results show that the improved system can improve the synchronization accuracy.

In view of PTP high precise timing requirement for many application fields, GPS time service is provided with the advantages of high precision and high stabilization. The principle and timescale of PTP based on GPS are analyzed and discussed. And then a PTP time synchronization platform with GPS-based UTC time is designed and implemented, the correlative key design flowchart is described as well. Finally, the paper gives the experiment results, which show the time synchronization accuracies can reach nanosecond range.

Plummeting reserves and increasing demand of freshwater resources have culminated into a global water crisis. Desalination is a potential solution to mitigate the freshwater shortage. However, the process of desalination is expensive and energy-intensive. Due to the water-energy-climate nexus, there is an urgent need to provide sustainable low-cost electrical power for desalination that has the lowest impact on climate and related ecosystem challenges. For a large-scale reverse osmosis desalination plant, we have proposed the design and analysis of a photovoltaics and battery-based stand-alone direct current power network. The design methodology focusses on appropriate sizing, optimum tilt and temperature compensation techniques based on 10 years of irradiation data for the Carlsbad Desalination Plant in California, USA. A decision-tree approach is employed for ensuring hourly load-generation balance. The power flow analysis evaluates self-sufficient generation even during cloud cover contingencies. The primary goal of the proposed system is to maximize the utilization of generated photovoltaic power and battery energy storage with minimal conversions and transmission losses. The direct current based topology includes high-voltage transmission, on-the-spot local inversion, situational awareness and cyber security features. Lastly, economic feasibility of the proposed system is carried out for a plant lifetime of 30 years. The variable effect of utility-scale battery storage costs for 16–18 h of operation is studied. Our results show that the proposed design will provide low electricity costs ranging from 3.79 to 6.43 ¢/kWh depending on the debt rate. Without employing the concept of baseload electric power, photovoltaics and battery-based direct current power networks for large-scale desalination plants can achieve tremendous energy savings and cost reduction with negligible carbon footprint, thereby providing affordable water for all.

We propose a type of polarization-independent circulator based on a composite rod of ferrite and plasma materials in a two-dimensional photonic crystal (PhC) slab. Only one composite rod was set at the center of the structure to provide circulation for both TE- and TM-polarized waves. Additionally, to improve the performance of the circulator, three additional rods were inserted to improve the coupling condition between the center magneto-optical microcavity and the corresponding waveguides. Finite element method was used to calculate the characteristics of the structure and the Nelder–Mead optimization method was employed to obtain the optimum parameters. The results show that a low insertion loss (~0.22 dB) and high isolation (~14 dB) can be achieved in our structure for waves of both TE and TM polarizations. The idea presented here may be useful for designing compact polarization devices in large-scale integrated photonic circuits.

This work applies a ultra large scale topology optimization method to study the optimal structure of bridge girders in cable supported bridges.

The current classic orthotropic box girder designs are limited in further development and optimiza tion, and suffer from substantial fatigue issues. A great disadvantage of the orthotropic girder is the loads being carried one direction at a time, thus creating stress hot spots and fatigue problems. Hence, a new design concept has the potential to solve many of the limitations in the current state of-the-art.

We present a design method based on ultra large scale topology optimization. The highly detailed structures and fine mesh-discretization permitted by ultra large scale topology optimization reveal new design features and previously unseen eff ects. The results demonstrate the potential of gener ating completely different design solutions for bridge girders in cable supported bridges, which dif fer significantly from the classic orthotropic box girders.

The overall goal of the presented work is to identify new and innovative, but at the same time con structible and economically reasonable, solutions tobe implemented into the design of future cable supported bridges.

In recent years, as the load increasing gradually, problems in voltage stability of regional power network which is the terminal of power grid is serious. From the voltage stability machine rational analysis to roll out small interfering voltage stability criterion of new, and the modal method is used to determine the key nodes and areas of the system theory basis.
