Abstract The paddlewheel aerator is one of the supporting facilities in the intensive aquaculture pond system. Assuming all the land uses an intensive cultivation system, more than two million paddlewheels worth more than 10 trillion will be needed by 2024. Currently, all paddlewheels are produced abroad or imported. This is very unfortunate considering the vast market potential. This paper discussed a preliminary study of developing paddlewheel aeration for shrimp ponds using an integrated intelligent aquaculture system to support intensification. Two paddlewheel aerators with modifications in the gearbox have been successfully installed. Based on the observation and user’s testimony, the newly installed paddlewheel was quite good, the sound of the motor was smooth, then the flow range was longer, the coverage area was more expansive than the existing waterwheel. This research would be a foundation for intelligent paddlewheel aeration design that can be developed domestically to support local industry in Indonesia.

The aim of this study was to determine the preference for plankton as natural feed by giant gourami, walking catfish, and red nile on intensive aquaculture system. The study was designed using Completely Randomized Design (RAL), with two replications. Each fish was kept in six concrete tanks with dimension 2x2x1 m³ and 60 cm water level. Water source were from wells. Commercial pellet feed was given in three times daily ad libitum. Water samples were filtered and two individual fish were collected for plankton samples from pond water and alimentary canal, respectively, every two week, simultaneously with water quality measurements. Plankton samples were preserved using 5% formaldehyde and was observed under a compound light microscope with 100x magnification. The amount of plankton in the alimentary canal was converted to volume. Data were analyzed descriptively. The result showed that the volume contents proportion of plankton in the alimentary canal was less than 1%. The volume of plankton proportion in the alimentary canal of red nile were found the most than other fish. Each fish had the same preference of plankton of Lepocinclis and Scenedesmus, but different from other species of plankton. The plankton that utilized by giant gouramy were Crucigenia, Diadesmis and Navicula, whereas walking catfish was Pediastrum, and red nile was Microcystis. The plankton that preferred by giant gouramy were Crucigenia, Oscillatoria, Splirullina, and Synedra, walking catfish was Navicula, while red nile were Chrysamoeba and Tintinnidium.

Romanian aquaculture can be economically sustainable and viable if the farm is profitable, the farm's income is secure, and the products are accepted by customers. In many cases, improving environmental sustainability can lead to optimizing economic sustainability. For example, a more efficient use of food and nutrients or reduced water and energy consumption are not only beneficial for the environment, but can also reduce costs. Growth in polyculture system, which represents the growth of several species of fish in the same space (pond, pool, basin, etc.), and diversification of supply can increase consumer confidence and thus economic sustainability. The diet must provide the fish with the nutrients necessary for growth (proteins with a plastic role) and provide the energy necessary for physiological processes. Quality food ensures good development, facilitates reproduction and prevents extremely harmful diseases in an aquaculture system. The paper presents a series of experimental recipes for pelletized feed made using an experimental model of small capacity. Nutrient pellets made for feeding fish from the Cyprinid family were analyzed in terms of gross energy value, ash content, moisture, mechanical durability over time, bulk density etc.

An experiment was conducted to assess the effect of aeration using blower on growth and production of tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) in intensive aquaculture system in six (6) earthen ponds at BAU campus, Mymensingh from May to September, 2016. Treatment 1 (T1) with 3 aerated ponds and Treatment 2 (T2) with 3 non-aerated ponds were designed with similar stocking density (300/decimal) of tilapia. Oxygen supply was ensured by blower for 9 hours daily when oxygen depletion occurs in pond water. Fish growth, pond water and soil quality parameters were sampled and assessed. The DO content in the aerated ponds was higher (7.23 mg/l) from the beginning to the end of experiment compared to non-aerated ponds (2.33 mg/l). There were significant differences (p<0.05) of DO content between two treatments at first and last sampling stages. The higher length (15.64±1.56 cm) and weight gain (143.36±39.33 gm), higher SGR (% per day) for tilapia was (2.54±0.00) found in T1 compared to T2 (2.42±0.00) with significant differences (p<0.05) between two treatments. In addition, the higher production of tilapia was obtained in T1 (9581.87±0.00 kg/ha/100 days) compared to T2 (6490.80±0.00 kg/ha/100 days). The average phytoplankton production was relatively higher in T2 and conversely zooplankton abundance was higher in T1 without any significant differences (p>0.05) between the treatments for the abundances of various groups of phytoplankton and zooplankton. Different water quality parameters were found with the better range in aerated ponds. Various intrinsic relationships between DO and other water quality and weather parameters showed that DO content had negative relationships with rainfall, air pressure and humidity but the relationships were not statistically significant. Moreover, different soil quality parameters of pond sediments were found in ideal range for fish culture in both treatments. These results suggest that aeration can be a potential mechanism of aqua-farming to enhance the growth and production of tilapia and DO content in pond water synchronizing other water quality parameters in ponds.J. The efficiency of feed is considered as one of the most crucial factors that affects the growth performance, feed conversion ratio and yield as well. The study was aimed to compare the growth parameters of tilapia at different stocking densities to detect the efficiency of sinking feed assessing the growth trends at various sampling stages. To evaluate the comparative yield, the study was carried out in twelve concrete tanks under an outdoor laboratory shed. Tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) fry was released at the rate of 8 fry per tank as per the recommended stocking density of 320 fishes/decimal and 4 fry per tank equivalent to the stocking density of 160 fishes/decimal in intensive and semi-intensive aquaculture system, respectively. To evaluate the growth trends sinking feed was used for feeding the fish during the experimental period for T1 (Intensive) and T2 (Semi-intensive), respectively. The feed was supplied in each with three replications at the rate of 20%, 15%, and 10% of the body weight of fish, respectively. The daily ration of feed was delivered to fish dividing into two parts daily. Aeration facilities using air stone aerator were installed for 24 hours. To assume the consecutive growth trends, weight of fish was recorded in 3 days interval to have better understanding on the yield performance in relation to the feed conversion ratio (FCR). Water quality parameters i.e., temperature and dissolved oxygen (DO) were recorded two times daily. The final weight gains of fish were 133.77±5.65 gm and 50.70±2.40 gm for T1 and T2, respectively. The mean percent weight gain of tilapia was higher in T1 (1127.25±0.00) than T2 (518.51±0.00 gm). Feed conversion ratio (FCR) in T1 and T2 were 1.97±0.11 and 1.70±0.07, respectively. The specific growth rates (SGR) of tilapia in T1 4.90±3.03 and 4.78±3.83 considering the data at the beginning and the end of the production cycle, respectively. Higher total production was obtained in T1 (1070.19 gm) than T2 (610.00 gm) with 100% survival in both the treatments. The present study reveals that, the efficiency of sinking feed was higher in T1 than T2 and farmers might be suggested to practice tank-based intensive aquaculture system to get higher production in a short period of time.

Nannochloropsis sp. is one of microalgaes species with high lipid content, so it has great potential to be used as the source of biofuel. One of the microalgae cultivation system in mass scale is open raceway ponds. Problems faced in microalgae cultivation with open raceway ponds system are low productivity and the high production cost, especially high electrical energy for operating paddle wheel machine. This research studies about efficiency and effectiveness level of the cultivation system with open raceway ponds through the analysis of correlation between operational duration of the paddle wheel with growth rate and lipid content from Nannochloropsis sp.. The highest density is 530x106 cell/ml found in treatment of 45min/h. The highest growth rate is 0,45/days Which also found in the treatment of 45min/h but the treatment 45min/h is only able to survive until 12 days. The highest productivity of dry biomass is 0,25 g/L/day found in treatment of 45min/h. Meanwhile, the highest lipid content contained on treatment 15min/h is 5,19%DCW. Dominant fatty acids for all treatments are palmitic acids. The best treatment related to the use of the paddle wheel machine is 15min/h.

Marine aquaculture is an important growing worldwide industry. An ecosystem approach to study the effects of aquaculture on shrimp ponds was implemented by using a trophic mass-balance model in order to estimate the potential effects of aquaculture and, therefore, to identify the species playing a key-role in ecosystem. Furthermore, the use of mass-balance models can provide important information to improve shrimp culture.
