Abstract Background: Anemia has created attention worldwide because of its adverse effects on the mother and the fetus during pregnancy. A large body of evidence has shown that pregnant women are the most vulnerable group to anemia. Objectives: This study aims to determine the prevalence of anemia, and associated risk factors, among pregnant women attending antenatal care (ANC) at government and private hospitals in Bangladesh. Methods: This cross-sectional study included 424 pregnant women, who visited hospitals for ANC from January to July 2019. We used a simple random sampling technique to select study subjects. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire and participant’s current medical record cards. SPSS software was used for analyzing data. Results: The prevalence of anemia was 62.5% and significantly (P < 0.001) higher in the subjects attending ANC in government hospitals (68.7%) than in private (55.0%) hospitals. The prevalence of the severity of anemia was 28.3% mild, 36.9% moderate, and 3.40% severe in government hospitals while in private hospitals was 14.7% mild, 39.8% moderate, and 0.5% severe anemia. Anemia was significantly associated with maternal age 20–25 years [adjusted odds ratio (AOR) = 1.9] and 26–30 years (AOR = 2.37), monthly family income (300–500) US$ (AOR = 2.76), and ANC in government hospitals (AOR = 2.02), the parity [multiparous (AOR = 1.92)], gravidity [multigravid (AOR = 1.63)], contraception [no contraception (AOR = 2.50), and iron supplement [no iron supplement (AOR = 0.64). Conclusions: The result suggests that pregnant women should receive routine ANC and recognize iron supplementation during pregnancy. Finally, the results of this study are particularly relevant for pregnant women who are receiving ANC.

Background  Anemia in pregnancy is responsible for many adverse effects on maternal and fetal outcome. It is the commonest hematological disorder accompanying pregnancy. Prevalence of anemia among pregnant women is fairly high worldwide, especially in developing countries. A research finding published by World Health organization revels that the prevalence of anemia among pregnant women in developing countries averages 56% (ranging between 35 to 100%). Though Nepal has decreasing trend of prevalence of anemia, it is still high (42% in 2006). Identifying the associated factors which are responsible for the development of anemia during pregnancy would be of great help in mitigating the burden to some extent. Ojective of the study was to find out the pattern of anemia and associated risk factors for anemia during pregnancy. Materials and Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted in VDC named Hansposa.  Door to door survey was carried out to collect data using pre-designed questionnaires. Ante-natal check-ups were provided with analysis of hemoglobin levels, in every individual of study population, using conventional Shali's method. Chi-square test was applied, where applicable. Results Altogether 249 pregnant women were included in the study. The proportion of anemia was found to be 46.6%, the cases of mild anemia, and moderate anemia were 51.0% and 49.0% respectively. Risk factors includes: history of complications during previous pregnancy (P<0.001), education (P<0.05), age at marriage (P=0.028), low socio-economic status (P<0.001), gravidity and parity (P<0.01), poor knowledge about anemia (P<0.001), abnormal body mass index (P<0.001) and smoking (P=0.05). Conclusion This study indicates that the prevalence of anemia during pregnancy bears a resemblance to national value. Major associated risk factors include: history of complications during previous pregnancy, low knowledge about anemia in pregnant women, women with low body mass index, age at marriage, socio-economic status, gravidity and parity, and smoking. BACKGROUND Anemia is a worldwide major problem known to affect people throughout the world. It has an adverse effect on both the social and economic development. The worldwide prevalence of anemia is 9% in developed nations. The global estimate indicates that 293.1 million of children under five years, approximately 43%, are anaemic worldwide and 28.5% of these children are found in sub Saharan Africa. In Zambia specifically Kasempa, no documented studies on prevalence have been done. Despite iron supplementation being given to pregnant women and the availability of blood transfusion. The burden of the disease remains high as determined by high mortality and morbidity. This study aims at determining the prevalence of anemia and the associated risk factors among under-five children at Mukinge Mission Hospital in Kasempa District. Knowledge of prevalence and the associated risk factors of anaemia will enhance early detection and timely management. OBJECTIVE 1.To determine the hemoglobin status of anaemia by its severity among anaemic under-five children admitted at Mukinge Mission Hospital. 2.To assess the association of anaemia with Malaria among under-five children admitted at Mukinge Mission Hospital. METHODS This was a retrospective study review of under-five children that were diagnosed and managed of Anemia at Mukinge Missions Hospital, over the period of period of 2015, 2017 and 2018. .Data of the variables of interest was extracted and analyzed using SPSS. RESULTS A sample population of 52 children was included in our study. The majority of the children were females 28 (53.8 %) and 24 (46.2 %) were Males. It was found that moderate and severe anaemia was 17.3% and 82.7 % respectively. Additionally, Majority of the anaemic children (75%) had Normocytic anaemia. The Pearson Chi square test revealed no statistical relationship between the variables; Malaria (p=0.58), Age (P=0.82), Gender (P=0.91). CONCLUSIONS According to our study, 39 (75%) had normal mean corpuscular volume which could suggest chronic diseases and sickle cell anemia. 11 (21.2%) had a low mean corpuscular volume indicating Microcytic anemia which could suggest diseases such as iron deficiency and thalassemia among many other causes. However, we were unable to determine the specific cause of anemia.
