Camels are regarded as the ship of the desert, being used for transporting humans and their goods. They are also raised for milk, meat, hides and wool. Normal haematological values are important as disease diagnostic aid as they are vital indicator of the animals’ health status. Haematological parameters of one- humped camels (Camelusdromedarius) were determined in this study. 60 one- humped camels (Camelusdromedarius) were selected in sokoto and their blood samples were analyze using standard procedures for haematological parameters. [Packed cell volume (PCV), red blood cells (RBC), haemoglobin (Hb),white blood cells (WBC), neutrophils, eosinophils, Basophils, monocyte, lymphocyte, mean corpuscular volume (MCV), mean corpuscular haemoglobin (MCH), and mean corpuscular haemoglobin concentration (MCHC)].For all the parameters, only neutrophils and MCV values showed significant variation between sexes with male camels having higher values than females. There is variation in the range values for all the parameters between sexes except Basophils, Monocyte and Lymphocyte. Based on the results of this study, the values were similar in both sex except in neutrophils and mean corpuscular volume indicating insignificant effect of sex on most of the haematological parameters.

BackgroundThe goal of this study was to investigate the impact of mean corpuscular volume (MCV) in patients with esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) who underwent surgical resection.MethodsA total of 615 patients with ESCC who underwent esophagectomy were analyzed. Patients were divided into two groups according to the standard MCV: the high MCV group (>100 fl) and the low MCV group (≤100 fl). Survival analyses were performed to calculate overall survival (OS) and cancer-specific survival (CSS) and investigate the independent prognostic factors.ResultsFifty-one patients (8.3%) were in the high MCV group, and the other 564 patients (91.7%) were defined as the low MCV group. MCV was significantly correlated with sex, habitual alcohol or tobacco use, tumor length, body mass index, and multiple primary malignancies (P < 0.05). Elevated MCV was significantly correlated with poor survival in univariate and multivariate analyses. However, in subgroup analyses, MCV was found to be correlated with survival only in patients with alcohol or tobacco consumption and not in patients without alcohol or tobacco consumption.ConclusionsPretreatment MCV was correlated with survival in ESCC patients after esophagectomy. However, its prognostic value might only exist in patients with alcohol or tobacco consumption.

Abstract Thioacetamide (TAA) was administered orally at 0, 10, and 30 mg/kg bw daily to Sprague-Dawley rats aged 6-7 weeks for 28 consecutive days. The bodyweight decreased, however, the relative organ weights including the liver and kidneys increased. No significant histopathologic abnormalities were found in the kidneys. The numbers of monocytes and platelets were significantly increased, however, the mean corpuscular volume and hematocrit values were decreased significantly in rats exposed to 30 mg/kg bw TAA. The expression levels of Kim-1 and NGAL were increased 4 to 5-fold in the kidney tissue of rats exposed to TAA, resulting in significant nephrotoxicity. Proteomic analysis was conducted and a total of 5221 proteins spots were resolved. Of these, three and 21 protein spots were up- and downregulated in a dose-dependent manner, respectively. The validation of seven proteins was performed by Western blot analysis. The expression level of ASAP2 was significantly upregulated, whereas RGS14, MAP7Dl, IL-3Rα, Tmod1, NQO2, and MUP were reduced. Sixteen isoforms of MUP were found by the 2DE immunoblot assay and were significantly downregulated with increasing exposure to TAA. MUP isoforms were compared in the liver, kidneys, and urine of untreated rats and a total of 43 isoforms were found.

Abstract Background Dengue fever (DF) is an acute viral disease which can lead to severe illness, including dengue hemorrhagic fever, marked by thrombocytopenia and hemolytic anemia, as well as end-organ damage. Despite the well-known presentation and prevalence, changes in hematologic markers across the DF course have not been well-described in children. We sought to investigate the association of clinical laboratory values over time with dengue disease progression and outcome in a pediatric population in the Dominican Republic. Methods Pediatric participants were enrolled at Hospital Infantil Dr. Robert Reid Cabral in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, in a prospective, observational case-based study. Laboratory values, including complete blood count (CBC) indices and dengue titer results, were collected over the course of hospital stay. Using linear mixed models, we assessed whether 13 different CBC values and time trajectories differed by dengue status, including age and sex as covariates. To account for multiple testing, p≤0.0033 was considered significant. Results A total of 575 children ages 0 to 211 months met inclusion criteria; 51.8% (n=298) were male, and the median (IQR) age was 59 (14-93) months. Eighty-two percent (n=472) of participants had DF. CBC values across days 1 to 10 of fever in those with and without DF are depicted in Figure 1. Those with DF showed levels dropping more quickly across days of fever for hematocrit and hemoglobin (p≤ 0.002), with a more rapid decline in those with severe DF (p < 0.0001). Those with DF had levels increasing more quickly for mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC), monocyte number, and white blood cell counts (p ≤ 0.003), with those with severe DF having a more rapid increase (p < 0.001). The direction of the change across time differed by DF status for mean corpuscular volume and red blood cell distribution width (RDW) (p ≤ 0.0003), with those with severe DF showing an increase in RDW across day of fever (p= 0.0004). Figure 1. CBC values across day of fever in dengue (blue) and non-dengue (purple) patients. The graph above depicts the following CBC values across day of fever in dengue (blue) and non-dengue (purple) patients: a) white blood cell (WBC) count, b) platelet count, c) monocyte number, d) hemoglobin, e) mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC), and f) mean corpuscular volume (MCV). Values with an asterisk (*) represent significant values (p < 0.0033). Conclusion The trajectory of CBC measures differs between those with and without DF, despite similar clinical presentations. These laboratory differences may facilitate a better understanding of the clinical course of DF and may aid in earlier identification of DF in resource-limited settings. Disclosures Elizabeth P. To estimate the prevalence of thalassaemia genes in Baghdad, a study was made of 502 randomly selected pregnant women attending a major maternity care clinic in the city. A reduced mean corpuscular volume [MCV] of < 80 fl was used as a screening test for thalassaemia in this population, followed by a battery of tests, including haemoglobin analysis and iron studies, to confirm the diagnosis. Using this approach, 22 cases were diagnosed of beta-thalassaemia trait, five cases of alpha-thalassaemia trait and one case of delta beta-thalassaemia trait. Based on these figures the estimated prevalence rates of beta-, alpha- and delta beta-thalassaemia traits in Baghdad, would be 4.4%, 1.0% and 0.2%, respectively. The study also includes a discussion of the above findings in the context of those reported in other neighbouring countries

Abstract Introduction Perioperative anemia commonly occurs in patients undoing major surgery. We aimed to assess the efficacy and safety of intravenous iron therapy (IVIT) given compared to standard practice of oral iron in the perioperative period. Design The search strategy was conducted in Medline, Embase, and Cochrane for only eligible clinical trials (randomized controlled trials) comparing IV over oral iron therapy up to July 2019. The primary outcome was the effect of IVIT on the change of hemoglobin level. The secondary outcomes were the effects of IVIT compared to oral iron on ferritin level, mean corpuscular volume, and adverse side effects. Data were collected from each trial and where applicable meta-analyzed using RevMan. Results Six randomized clinical trials that fit our inclusion criteria were included in the study. We found that IVIT increases the level of hemoglobin compared to oral iron (MD: Mean difference 0.90, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.44–1.36, P = 0.000). Serum ferritin levels increased significantly in favor of the IV iron group compared to the oral iron group at posttreatment (MD: 106.95, 95% CI: 73.29, 140.62 ng/mL). In addition, marked increases in the pooled mean corpuscular volume (MCV) level were observed in favor of the IVIT (MD: 6.07, 95% CI: −0.88–13.02). There was no significant difference in the rate of adverse effects in both the groups. Conclusions IV iron therapy is more effective than oral iron on increasing hemoglobin, ferritin, and MCV in the perioperative period and is also as safe with no diffidence in the risk of developing adverse side effects.

Abstract Objectives: To investigate the diagnostic value of accessible fingertip mean corpuscular volume (MCV) combined with a visible “beefy red” patch in the diagnosis of vitamin B12 (VB12) deficiency in local clinics and hospitals without in-house clinical laboratories, especially in remote areas.Materials and methods The medical history data of patients complaining of oral mucosal pain at the Stomatological Hospital of Southern Medical University were reviewed. All included patients underwent fingertip blood routine examination, specific serological test (serum VB12, folic acid, iron, and ferritin), and detailed oral clinical examinations. According to the results of the serum VB12 test patients were divided into case and control groups. The diagnostic value of the “beefy red” patch and elevated MCV in VB12 deficiency was evaluated by the receiver operator characteristic curve. Results There are more female patients in the case group (n=81) and the control group (n=60). Compared to the control group, the number of patients with “beefy red” patch and abnormal MCV increased significantly in the case group (P<0.05). The diagnostic test, “beefy red patch” has high sensitivity but low specificity, “MCV>100 fL” has high sensitivity but low specificity, and “MCV>100 fL combined with beefy red patch” has maximal specificity, and area under the curve. Conclusions Visible oral “beefy red” patch combined with accessible fingertip blood MCV could improve the rate of diagnosis in VB12 deficiency, especially in the elderly in local clinics and hospitals without in-house clinical laboratories in China, which is conducive to early disease detection and treatment.
