The southern coast of Java which is facing to the Indian Ocean has many of natural hazard potential come from the sea. Since 2006 tsunami impacted the southern coast of Java, and caused severely damage especially along the coast of Cilacap (1-7,7 m run up height). People commit to do greening the beach by planting suitable plants such as a Casuarina equisetifolia, Terminalia catappa, and Cocos nucifera. This paper discusses the existence of coastal forests in Cilacap coastal area, their potential ability as a coastal protection from the tsunami wave which cover the density, diameter, height, age, and other parameters that affects the coastal defence against tsunami waves. Some experiences of tsunamis that have occurred, indicating that the above parameters linked to the ability of vegetation to act as a natural barrier against tsunamis. In the case of sandy beaches, such as in Cilacap, Pandanus odorarissimus has more effectiveness than other trees due to its hanging roots that can withstand the tsunami height less than 5 m, able to withstand debris and can withstand the scouring effects of tsunami waves, while Casuarina equisetifolia along Cilacap beaches more dominant than other trees, so it is recommended to increase the diversity of plants as well as increase the density and tree placement setting. By field measurement in order to get parameter applied to some graphs, Cilacap coastal forest does not enough capability for tsunami barrier reflected to the tsunami height experience in this region. Ages could be the important parameter in order to have bigger diameter trunk, higher trees height, and high resistance capacity againts tsunami hazard potential. Compare to Kupang, East Nusa Tenggara, Cilacap coastal forest still young and need some more years to make trees ready act as tsunami reduction. Keywords: Cilacap coastal forest, Kupang, tsunami, vegetation parameters. Pantai Selatan Jawa yang berhadapan dengan Samudera Hindia, memiliki banyak potensi mengalami bahaya yang datang dari lautan. Selama tahun 2006, Tsunami telah menimpa sebagian pantai selatan Jawa dan menyebabkan banyak kerusakan parah terutama di sepanjang Pantai Cilacap (tinggi gelombang 1-7,7 m). Masyarakat melakukan penghijauan pantai dengan menanam sejumlah pohon yang sesuai dengan kondisi pantai, seperti pohon cemara pantai (Casuarina equisetifolia), ketapang (Terminalia cattapa) dan kelapa (Cocos nucifera). Tulisan ini membahas penyebaran hutan pantai di wilayah pantai Cilacap, kemampuan dan potensi hutan tersebut sebagai pelindung alami pantai dari bahaya gelombang tsunami, yang terdiri dari kerapatannya, diameter, tingginya, umur, dan parameter lainnya yang mempengaruhi daya tahan pantai terhadap gelombang tsunami. Beberapa pengalaman mengenai kejadian yang telah terjadi, memperlihatkan bahwa parameter tersebut di atas mempengaruhi kemampuan tanaman sebagai penahan alamiah terhadap tsunami. Untuk kondisi pantai berpasir seperti Cilacap, tanaman pandan pantai lebih efektif dibandingkan dengan tanaman lainnya, dikarenakan akarnya yang dapat menahan tinggi gelombang kurang dari 5 m, selain itu akar tersebut dapat menahan material dan erosi vertikal gelombang tsunami, sementara di sepanjang pantai Cilacap, tanaman cemara pantai (Casuarina equisetifolia) lebih dominan dibandingkan tanaman lainnya. Kondisi ini dapat direkomendasikan untuk tetap dipertahankan bahkan ditambah jumlahnya. Di lapangan dilakukan pengukuran parameter tanaman pantai dan hasilnya diplot dalam bentuk grafik dan diaplikasikan dalam grafik yang dibuat berdasarkan hasil penelitian terhadap tsunami di beberapa tempat di dunia terutama di Jepang. Berdasarkan tinggi gelombang maksimum yang pernah terjadi di daerah ini (7,7 m), terlihat bahwa hutan pantai Cilacap belum cukup mampu bertindak sebagai penahan gelombang tsunami. Umur merupakan parameter penting agar pohon memiliki diameter yang besar, pohon yang cukup tinggi dan daya tahan terhadap potensi bahaya tsunami. Dibandingkan dengan hutan pantai di Kupang, Nusa Tenggara Timur, hutan pantai di Cilacap relatif masih muda dan membutuhkan beberapa tahun lagi untuk dapat memperkecil resiko yang ditimbulkan oleh bahaya tsunami. Abstract. We investigated the tsunami hazard in the remote French territory of Wallis and Futuna, Southwest Pacific, using the Gerris flow solver to produce numerical models of tsunami generation, propagation and inundation. Wallis consists of the inhabited volcanic island of Uvéa that is surrounded by a lagoon delimited by a barrier reef. Futuna and the island of Alofi forms the Horn Archipelago located ca. 240 km east of Wallis. They are surrounded by a narrow fringing reef. Futuna and Alofi emerge from the North Fiji Transform Fault that marks the seismically active Pacific-Australia plate boundary. We generated fifteen tsunami scenarios. For each, we calculated maximum wave elevation (MWE), inundation distance, and Expected Time of Arrival (ETA). The tsunami sources were local, regional and distant earthquake faults located along the Pacific Rim. In Wallis, the outer reef may experience 6.8 m-high MWE. Uvéa is protected by the barrier reef and the lagoon, but inundation depths of 2–3 m occur in several coastal areas. In Futuna, flow depths exceeding 2 m are modelled in several populated areas, and have been confirmed by a post-September 2009 South Pacific tsunami survey. The channel between the islands of Futuna and Alofi amplified the 2009 tsunami, which resulted in inundation distance of almost 100 m and MWE of 4.4 m. This first-ever tsunami hazard modelling study of Wallis and Futuna compares well with palaeotsunamis recognised on both islands and observation of the impact of the 2009 South Pacific tsunami. The study provides evidence for the mitigating effect of barrier and fringing reefs from tsunamis.

Abstract. A primary tool for regional tsunami hazard assessment is a reliable historical and instrumental catalogue of events. Morocco by its geographical situation, with two marine sides, stretching along the Atlantic coast to the west and along the Mediterranean coast to the north, is the country of Western Africa most exposed to the risk of tsunamis. Previous information on tsunami events affecting Morocco are included in the Iberian and/or the Mediterranean lists of tsunami events, as it is the case of the European GITEC Tsunami Catalogue, but there is a need to organize this information in a dataset and to assess the likelihood of claimed historical tsunamis in Morocco. Due to the fact that Moroccan sources are scarce, this compilation rely on historical documentation from neighbouring countries (Portugal and Spain) and so the compatibility between the new tsunami catalogue presented here and those that correspond to the same source areas is also discussed.

The article describes the tsunami hazard assessment for the coast of the Caspian Sea, in particular for the Absheron Peninsula. Due to the high socio-economic load on the coast of this region by electric power and oil production industries requirements, it is necessary to take into account risks even for such extremely rare natural phenomena like tsunamis. An earthquake with M = 8 ± 0.2 can occur throughout the Caspian Sea region, including land, once every 216 years, while for the water area the frequency of occurrence of such an event is 1620 years. The article presents the results of a tsunami hazard assessment based on a deterministic approach for the Absheron Peninsula. This approach of the tsunami hazard assessing of an arbitrary part of the coast consists of selecting of the strongest observed (or hypothetical) tsunami event from a neighborhood and from a distant zone, of the subsequent estimation of parameters for model sources and, finally, of the numerical modeling of tsunami generation and propagation from these sources. It was obtained that with the propagation of tsunami waves from the north to the coast of the Absheron Peninsula, its height can reach 3‒4 m for some parts of the coast with run-up 500‒1500 m.

PurposeThis study assesses tourism development dilemmas about the Big Tree Nature Reserve (BNTR) with its neighboring tourism entities in Musina Municipality, Limpopo, South Africa.Design/methodology/approachData were obtained by interviews, questionnaires, focus group discussions and physical observation. Tacitly pertinent literature review propped and augmented the adopted approach.FindingsThe examination exposed many hurdles correlated with tourism efforts around the BNTR and its adjoining tourism entities. The gains of tourism were not drawn into by the local communities within and around the study area. The determinants adding to the poor state of tourism professions got portrayed by the conclusions of the study. Therefore, there was an inherent necessity for a turnaround efficient tourism management to promote tourism initiatives to bolster local communities in the region.Originality/valueMusina Municipality constitutes a remote region in the north of Limpopo province, South Africa. Poor rural livelihoods are analogous to many rural districts within the continent. Despite all these, it substantially incorporates an essentially tourism-based area within the Vhembe district of Limpopo province.
