Variation in direct solar radiation is one of the main disturbances that any solar system must handle to maintain efficiency at acceptable levels. As known, solar radiation profiles change due to earth's movements. Even though this change is not manipulable, its behavior is predictable. However, at ground level, direct solar radiation mainly varies due to the effect of clouds, which is a complex phenomenon not easily predictable. In this paper, dynamic solar radiation time series in a two-dimensional (2D) spatial domain are obtained using a biomimetic cloud-shading model. The model is tuned and compared against available measurement time series. The procedure uses an objective function based on statistical indexes that allow extracting the most important characteristics of an actual set of curves. Then, a multi-objective optimization algorithm finds the tuning parameters of the model that better fit data. The results showed that it is possible to obtain responses similar to real direct solar radiation transients using the biomimetic model, which is useful for other studies such as testing control strategies in solar thermal plants.

Abstract Morphological characteristics of ripples are analyzed considering bed surfaces as two dimensional random fields of bed elevations. Two equilibrium phases are analyzed with respect to successive development of ripples based on digital elevation models. The key findings relate to the shape of the two dimensional second-order structure functions and multiscaling behavior revealed by higher-order structure functions. Our results suggest that (1) the two dimensional second-order structure functions can be used to differentiate the two equilibrium phases of ripples; and (2) in contrast to the elevational time series of ripples that exhibit significant multiscaling behavior, the DEMs of ripples at both equilibrium phases do not exhibit multiscaling behavior.

This paper describes fractal behaviors in a soccer game according to the player's position. It is quite important for us to characterize the fractal motion behaviors of the objects during the game. We obtained two-dimensional coordinates of the objects using standard video processing techniques from a computer soccer game. We calculated values of regularization dimensions of the time series to characterize their fractal behaviors. To see positional dependence, we averaged individual player's values over the same position in the same team. When a team is one-sidedly experiencing a severe attack, its defenders have higher fractal dimensions than those of the opponent's corresponding players. We propose a new measure of relative dominance in attack against the opponent team.

CCDs are essentially the only instrument available today for photometry at most observatories; they are also becoming more readily available to amateurs as well. Thus, obtaining good photometric data with these two-dimensional devices is something we all need to understand. The history of and recent developments in CCD time-series photometry will be reviewed with some comments on future directions.

The nonlinear Schro¨dinger method for water wave kinematics under two-dimensional irregular deepwater gravity waves is developed. Its application is illustrated for computation of the velocity and acceleration fields from the time-series of the surface displacement measured at a fixed horizontal position. The method is based on the assumption that the waves have small steepness and limited bandwidth.

AbstractAn experiment apparatus has been previously developed with the ability to independently control the instantaneous flow velocity in a water flume. This configuration, which uses two pitching hydrofoils to generate the flow fluctuations, allows the unsteady response of submerged structures to be studied over a wide range of driving frequencies and conditions. Linear unsteady lift theory has been used to calculate the instantaneous circulation about two pitching hydrofoils in uniform flow. A vortex model is then used to describe the circulation in the wakes that determine the velocity perturbations at the centreline between the foils. This paper introduces how the vortex model can be discretized to allow the inverse problem to be solved, such that the foil motions required to recreate a desired velocity time series can be determined. The results of this model are presented for the simplified cases of oscillatory velocity fluctuations in the vertical and stream-wise directions separately, and also simultaneously. The more general case of two-dimensional aperiodic velocity fluctuations is also presented, which demonstrates the capability of configuration between the suggested frequency limits of $0. 06\leq k\leq 1. 9$.
