Optical limiters based on several different classes of nanomaterials are reviewed. The systems under consideration include metal and semiconductor nanoparticles and nanoscale carbon materials. For the latter, the optical limiting properties of carbon nanoparticles, fullerenes, and suspended and solubilized carbon nanotubes are summarized and compared. Mechanistic implications of the available experimental results are discussed in terms of the comparison between nonlinear scattering versus nonlinear absorption as the dominating optical limiting mechanism for different nanomaterials and for different physico-chemical states of a nanomaterial.

SummaryThe presence of pyridoxamine phosphate in extracts of freeze-dried raw and evaporated milks has been demonstrated by separation and identification of the vitamin B6 active compounds by chromatography and electrophoresis on paper. Its presence in the milk extracts is the cause of the higher values for vitamin B6 activity measured with Streptococcus faecalis as compared with those obtained with Str. faecium or Saccharomyces carlsbergensis. This is because Str. faecalis can utilize the phosphate for growth as readily as free pyridoxamine, whereas Str. faecium and S. carlsbergensis cannot. The mild acid treatment used for extracting the vitamin B6 active compounds from the milk samples for microbiological assay was found to be insufficient to hydrolyse the pyridoxamine phosphate. Further treatment of the acid extracts with intestinal phosphatase released the pyridoxamine from its phosphate and increased the vitamin B6 activity measured with S. carlsbergensis and Str.faecium so that the total vitamin B6 activities of the freeze-dried raw and evaporated milks measured microbiologiclly, were then in agreement with the values found in previous tests with chicks and rats.Pyridoxamine phosphate could only be detected in small amounts in a sample of fresh milk. The possibility that more of it was formed during the processing and storage of the freeze-dried samples is discussed.

In the recent years industrial applications of carbon allotropes such as carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and graphene have been tested extensively, thus justifying research on the environmental impact these materials have. In the current paper we compare EDS spectroscopy results of a cabin filter used in a car to a filter used in an air purifier inside a residential space. The contaminants adsorbed on the carbon nanoparticles trapped in both types of filters allows for determining of their source of origin demonstrating clearly the dominant role of non-road emissions in Poland. Finally we present the experimental study on the growth of plants on substrates intentionally enriched with CNTs.

In the present work, electromagnetic interference shielding properties of polymer composites with dispersed cup-stacked carbon nanotubes, graphite nanoparticles and carbon black were investigated. The polymer composites with carbon nanoparticles content from 1 to 5 w% were successfully prepared by the coagulation method, and composite sheets with thickness from 0.25 to 0.77 mm were formed by the hot press technique. The electromagnetic interference shielding efficiency measured in the frequency range of 8.2~12.4 GHz (X-band) of cup-stacked carbon nanotubes/polymer composite was considerably higher than that of carbon black and graphite nanoparticles polymer composites at the same contents of carbon nanoparticles, and contribution of absorption to the shielding efficiency was found to be higher than that of reflection.

Multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were irradiated by 1.2 keV Ar ion beams for 15–60 min at room temperature with current density of 60 µA/cm2. The morphology and microstructure are investigated by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and Raman spectroscopy. The results show that carbon nanofibers are achieved after 60 min ion irradiation and the formation of carbon nanofibers proceeds through four periods, carbon nanotubes—amorphous carbon nanowires—carbon nanoparticles along the tube axis—conical protrusions on the nanoparticles surface—carbon nanofibers from the conical protrusions.

In this paper, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were functionalized by acid treatment and further functionalized with dodecylamine and were designated as CNT-carboxylic and CNT-amide, respectively. Then, functionalized CNTs produced were characterized with various methods to verify the attachment of a functional group. Performance of the functionalized CNTs in the detection of benzene gas was monitored at room temperature. The sample was dropped cast on the interdigitated transducer (IDT), and the changes in resistivity were recorded by a digital multimeter in a customized chamber under controlled humidity (∼55%) environment. Based on the findings, it showed that the functionalized CNTs provide an extra active area for interaction between the gas analyte and CNTs, thus increasing their response and improving the sensitivity of the sensing material.
