Abstract We measured an index of Red-shouldered Hawk (Buteo lineatus) abundance along streams in southern Ohio and related differences in abundance index to landscape-scale habitat characteristics within the surveyed areas. Fifteen study sites, each a 5.8-km reach of a permanent stream, were surveyed four times using broadcasts of Red-shouldered Hawk calls and Red-tailed Hawk (Buteo jamaicensis) calls. We determined the landcover types in a corridor surrounding each surveyed area using a GIS landcover data grid, and counted the number of small ponds within each corridor. We calculated hawk response rate for each species as the mean number of visual or aural detections per survey. Red-shouldered Hawk response rate was inversely correlated to Red-tailed Hawk response rate (r = −0.52, P < 0.04), and was positively correlated to the number of small ponds within each stream corridor (r = 0.77, P < 0.01), suggesting that the number of small ponds was an important factor associated with Red-shouldered Hawk abundance. Trabajamos en 15 sitios (cada uno comprendiendo 5.8 km alrededor de un arroyo permanente), que fueron censados cuatro veces reproduciendo vocalizaciones de B. lineatus y B. jamaicensis. Determinamos el tipo de uso de la tierra en un corredor alrededor de cada área censada utilizando un sistema de información geográfica y contamos el número de pequeños estanques al interior de cada corredor. Calculamos la tasa de respuesta de las dos especies de gavilanes como el número promedio de detecciones visuales o auditivas por censo. This study was carried out at Ny-Ålesund on Spitsbergen in Svalbard (High Arctic). Eight study sites were established along a transect from the fjord to the snout of the glacier. The sites differed from each other by the type of vegetation cover and soil characteristics. Soil samples were collected and placed in Tullgren funnels. Extracted arthropods were represented by two groups of mites (Mesostigmata and Oribatida) and springtails (Collembola). The pioneer species that occurred first after retreat of the glacier were representatives of the Collembola (Agrenia bidenticulata and Hypogastrura concolor). Later, other springtails appeared including Folsomia alpha, Folsomia quadrioculata, Hypogastrura concolor, Isotoma anglicana, Sminthurinus concolor and the first species of oribatid mites; Camisia foveolata and Tectocepheus velatus velatus. Arthropod communities recorded along the transect were characterized by large variations in both species composition and abundance of individuals. The greater the distance from the glacier snout, the greater the species richness (2 to 22 species). The mean number of species per sample was the lowest at site 8 (1 ± 0.71) (the closest to the glacier) and greatest at site 1 (14 ± 1.41) (furthest from the glacier). The Simpson’s diversity index (D) was distinctly greater at sites 1 (4.61 ± 0.06) and 3 (3.94 ± 0.11) than at other sites, especially site 8 (1.07 ± 0.06). Densities were least in the samples closest to the glacier (30 to 101 individuals; density 3000–10,100 individuals/m2). At the other locations, abundance was highly variable (905 to 7432 individuals; density 90,500–743,200 individuals/m2). The mean abundances were greatest at sites 2 and 3. The great variations in total abundances observed were often due to the presence or absence of one or more dominant species exhibiting extreme abundance variability between sites. The microarthropod community of the High Arctic is composed of heterogeneous circumpolar species, yet on a landscape scale is extremely dependent on local environmental conditions which may be subject to rapid change.

BACKGROUND The global spread of the 2019 coronavirus diseases (COVID-19) has caused emotional distress. However, whether auricular vagus nerve acupressure (AVNA) is effective in improving emotional distress under the COVID-19 has not been well-documented. OBJECTIVE To confirm whether AVNA is effective in improving emotional distress under the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS A smartphone-based online, randomized, controlled trial was designed in four study sites, including Wuhan, Beijing, Shenyang, and Guangzhou of China, from 26 February 2020 to 28 April 2020. Participants were randomly assigned to three times of AVNA (n = 191) or usual care (UC, n = 215) for 14 days. The primary outcome was the response rate, which was the proportion of participants whose Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) score reduced from baseline by ≥ 50%. The assessment was conducted at baseline, 3 days, and 14 days. RESULTS The AVNA group had a markedly higher response rate than the UC group at 3 days (35.6% vs. 24.9%, P = 0.02) and at 14 days (70.7% vs. 60.6%, P = 0.02). The AVNA group showed significantly greater reduction in score of HADS at the two measurement points and BAI at 3 days (P ≤ 0.03), with average respective effect size of 0.217 and 0.195. Participants with AVNA spent less time falling asleep and rated their sleep quality being remarkably higher than those with UC at endpoint. CONCLUSIONS AVNA can be recommended for patients with emotional distress under the current COVID-19 pandemic and other emergent events. CLINICALTRIAL www.chictr.org.cn Identifier: ChiCTR2000030078.

In the present study, we analyzed the main parameters related with the potential fertilization ability of two grapevine varieties, Godello and Mencía, during the years 2017 and 2018. The research was carried out in two vineyards of the Galician winegrowing Designation of Origin areas of Ribeiro and Ribeira Sacra. Ten vines of each variety were selected for bunch and flower counting, pollen calculations, pollen viability studies by means of aceto-carmine (AC) stain and 2, 3, 5-triphenyl tetrazolium chloride (TTC) methods, and the determination of their germination rate. In all vineyards the 50% fruitset was reached, except for Godello in Cenlle during 2017. The mean coulure value was higher for Godello (40.5%) than for Mencía (31%). Analyzing the pollen production per plant and airborne pollen levels, we observed important discordances between them, which can be due to the influence of weather conditions and be related with self-pollination processes. We found important differences on pollen viability depending on the applied method and variety, with higher values for the AC method than the TTC for both varieties in all study plots, and higher values for Mencía variety than Godello. Regarding germination rates, we observed a marked reduction in 2017 with respect to 2018, in all study sites and for both varieties. The analyzed parameters were useful to explain the different productive abilities of Godello and Mencía varieties in the two studied bioclimatic regions of Ribeiro and Ribeira Sacra.

<p class="emsd"><span lang="EN-GB">Greater sage-grouse (Centrocercus urophasianus) habitat characteristics were studied in central Montana primarily on Wyoming big sagebrush (Artemisia tridentata Nutt. ssp. wyomingensis Beetle &amp; Young) dominated rangeland. The primary objective was to compare shrub and herbaceous parameters within (use, random or non-use) and between seasonal habitats (nest, brood, winter). Two study sites (Musselshell and Golden Valley counties), and 2 years (2004 and 2005) were compared. Nest, brood, and random sites were compared for herbaceous cover, and grass height (n = 648). Nest, brood, random, winter use and winter non-use sites were evaluated for shrub cover, density, and height. All differences were considered significant at P ≤ 0.05. Sage-grouse nested in areas with greater total shrub cover and height, and taller live and residual grass than was randomly available. No differences were found between brood and paired random sites for any of the herbaceous or shrub parameters measured. Shrub cover and density were greater at winter use sites than non-use sites. Winter use sites had less shrub cover than nest sites. The nest and brood habitat had similar shrub cover, density, and height on the study area. Sage-grouse habitats should be managed to include sagebrush, forbs, and grass. Herbaceous vegetation was more important during nesting and brood rearing than during the winter. Therefore, some portions of <span>sage-</span>grouse habitat may benefit from management for greater herbaceous cover, but not at the expense of removing sagebrush. Sagebrush cover from 10 to 15 percent was the most consistent component of sage-grouse habitat.</span></p>

Bears (Ursus spp.) in North America eat the seeds of several pines (Pinus spp.), including Limber Pine (P. flexilis E. James). Information on use of Limber Pine in Canada is limited to a report of three bear scats containing pine seeds found in Limber Pine stands of southwestern Alberta. After my preliminary fieldwork in Banff National Park revealed that bears were eating seeds of Limber Pine there, I conducted a field study in 2014–2015 to assess this use. Because bears typically obtain pine seeds from cone caches (middens) made by Red Squirrels (Tamiasciurus hudsonicus), I described the abundance, habitat characteristics, and use by bears of Red Squirrel middens in and adjacent to Limber Pine stands at six study sites. On Bow River escarpments, I found abundant Limber Pines (basal area 1–9 m2/ha) and middens (0.8 middens/ha, standard deviation [SD] 0.2). Of 24 middens, 13 (54%) had been excavated by bears, and three bear scats composed of pine seeds were found beside middens. Although Limber Pines occurred on steep, xeric, windswept slopes (mean 28°, SD 3), middens occurred on moderate slopes (mean 12°, SD 3) in escarpment gullies and at the toe of slopes in forests of other species, particularly Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii). At the five other study sites, I found little or no use of Limber Pine seeds by bears, suggesting that Limber Pine habitat may be little used by bears unless the pines are interspersed with (non-Limber Pine) habitat with greater forest cover and less-steep slopes where squirrels establish middens. These observations provide managers with an additional piece of information regarding potential drivers of bear activity in the human-dominated landscape of Banff National Park’s lower Bow Valley.

Objective. We estimated time to initiation, outpatient resource use, and costs of outpatient care during the 6 months prior to ART initiation for HIV-infected pediatric patients in Zambia.Methods. We enrolled 1,102 children who initiated ART at <15 years of age between 2006 and 2011 at 5 study sites. Of these, 832 initiated ART ≤6 months after first presenting to care at the study sites. Data on time in care and resources utilized during the 6 months prior to ART initiation were extracted from patient medical records. Costs were estimated from the provider’s perspective and are reported in 2011 USD.Results. For the patients who initiated ART ≤6 months after presenting to care, median age at presentation to care was 3.9 years; median CD4 percentage was 13%. Median time to ART initiation was 26 days. Patients made, on average, 2.38 clinic visits prior to ART initiation and received 0.81 CD4 tests, 0.74 full blood count tests, and 0.49 blood chemistry tests. The mean cost of pre-ART care was $20 per patient.Conclusions. Zambian pediatric patients initiating ART ≤6 months after presenting to care do so quickly, utilize fewer resources than mandated by national guidelines, and accrue low costs.

Aims and MethodThis survey gathered data on the retirement intentions of consultant psychiatrists over the age of 50 years, in order to address retention issues. A questionnaire was sent to all 1438 consultants over this age in the UK.ResultsA total of 848 questionnaires were returned, an adjusted response rate of 59%. The mean age at which consultants intended to retire in this sample was 60 years (s.d. 4.16), suggesting a potential loss of 5725 consultant years. Reasons for early retirement are complex: factors encouraging retirement include too much bureaucracy, lack of free time and heavy case-loads; those discouraging retirement include enjoyment of work, having a good team and money. Mental Health Officer status is an important determinant in the decision to retire early.Clinical ImplicationsWith numerous vacancies in consultant psychiatrist posts throughout the UK, premature retirement is a cause for concern, possibly contributing to an overall reduction in consultant numbers of 5%. Addressing factors that influence consultants' decisions to leave the health service early should form an important part of an overall strategy to increase consultant numbers.

SynopsisJockeys based in racing stables in the Newmarket and Epsom areas of England were screened using the 26-item Eating Attitudes Test. The mean score of the EAT was 14·9, significantly above that reported for males in other studies. The response rate was poor, but 10 jockeys agreed to a full psychiatric and eating interview. The majority of jockeys interviewed reported food avoidance, the use of saunas, and the abuse of laxatives. Diuretics and appetite suppressants were also used. Bingeing was common, but self-induced vomiting was unusual. Current weights were 13% below, and the lowest reported weights 21% below, matched population mean weights. The relationship between these forms of eating behaviour and clinical eating disorders is discussed.

Background: The degree of efficacy and duration of effect of Intragastric Balloons (IGBs) can be variable and unpredictable. The Spatz Adjustable Intragastric Balloon (AIGB) was developed to address these issues by extending implantation to 1 year, decreasing balloon volume for intolerance and increasing volume for decreased balloon effect.Aims: To determine the efficacy and response rate of the Spatz3 AIGB.Methods: Results of 379 consecutive patients (pts) implanted with the Spatz3 AIGB were retrospectively reviewed (3 lost to follow up). Mean BMI 35.5; mean weight (wt) 97.5 kg; mean excess wt 29.1 kg; mean balloon volume 600ml. Balloon volume adjustments were offered: Down adjustments for intolerance and up adjustments for decreased balloon effect.Results: The mean implantation time of 376 pts was 10.6 months yielding mean wt loss 14.9 kg; mean 15.1% Total Body Wt Loss (%TBL) and 58% Excess Wt Loss(%EWL). Response rate (> 25%EWL) was achieved in 79% (297/376) of pts. Down adjustments in 95 pts (mean 2.4 months; mean -152.4 ml) allowed 76/95 (80%) to continue IGB therapy for at least 6 months (mean 9.1 months). Up adjustments in 205/376 (54.5%) pts (mean 5.8 months; mean + 179.2 ml) yielded additional mean wt loss of 6.5 kg. There was 1 gastric ulcer (0.27%). One balloon deflated at 7.4 months and 4 others deflated after 1 year (13-23 months).Conclusions: In this retrospective review of 376 Spatz3 AIGB patients, up adjustments yielded a mean 6.5kg extra wt loss for those with wt loss plateau, and down adjustments alleviated early intolerance. These two adjustment functions may be instrumental in yielding a successful outcome (> 25% EWL) in 79% of pts.
