Abstract Goat husbandry is a relevant and significant research topic. The goat age is possible to reach 15–18 years and it is important to study not only performance processes, but also to evaluate age-related changes. The purpose of this study was to evaluate antioxidant system characteristics in Saanen goats depending on age. The experiment was conducted in the north-western region of Russian Federation, the Leningrad Region. The five experimental groups included 30 Saanen goats each, selected using matched pairs method. 1st group included 1 year old goats, 2nd group included 2-year-old goats, 3rd group included 3-year-old goats, 4th group included 4-year-old goats and 5th group included 5-year-old animals. The blood samples were taken once –during the summer season. The blood levels of lipid peroxygenation markers (malondialdehyde, dienketone and conjugated dienes) and superoxide dismutase and catalase activity were assessed by standard methods. Results presented as mean±standard error of the mean. Student’s t-test was used after proving normal distribution. Level of significance is labeled as P < 0.05. The results are displayed in table 1 and 2. After analyzing the received data of antioxidant system characteristics there were revealed high intensity of free-radical oxidation in aged 4–5-year-old goats. This is explained by oxidative stress development. Noticeably that anti-oxidizing enzymes activity was reduced by the age of 5 years – the possible reason for lacking compensation of developed oxidative stress. By the age of 4 activity of anti-oxidizing enzymes was elevated marking the compensation stage of oxidative stress, this elevation is statistically significant. Consequently, these data allow taking into consideration exogenous anti-oxidizing agents administration in 5 years and older goats in order to reduce oxidative stress.

Abstract Dairy goat breeding is widespread worldwide. Goat milk and other derivative products are an important part of nutrition. Dairy products are the most important part of goat breeding; therefore, lactation performance is a relevant issue. The purpose of this study was to evaluate antioxidant system characteristics in Saanen goats depending on lactation performance. The experiment was conducted in the north-western region of Russian Federation, in the laboratories of the biochemistry and physiology departments at FSBEI of Higher Education «SPbSAVM». The three experimental groups included 30 Saanen goats each, 2nd–3rd lactations, selected using matched pairs method. 1st group included low milk producing ability goats (< 600 kg of milk yield per year), 2nd group included average milk producing ability goats (600–800 kg of milk yield per year), 3rd group included high milk producing ability goats (>800 kg of milk yield per year). The blood samples were taken once: at peak lactation performance (45 days after parturition). After analyzing the received data of antioxidant system characteristics, we found a high intensity of free-radical oxidation in high milk producing ability goats. This results in oxidative stress development. Activity of anti-oxidizing enzymes was elevated; therefore, free-radical oxidation is intensive. Consequently, these data allow us to take into consideration exogenous anti-oxidizing agents administration in high milk producing ability goats in order to reduce oxidative stress.

Abstract Dairy goats require attention and high-quality feeding during the lactation due to metabolism intensity. The metabolic rate during different lactation periods in order to better understanding production physiology in Saanen goats is the case of interest. The aim of this research was to evaluate antioxidant system characteristics in Saanen goats depending on lactation period. The experiment was conducted in the north-western region of Russian Federation, in the laboratory of the biochemistry and physiology department, FSBEI of Higher Education «SPbSAVM». The experimental group included 30 Saanen goats, 2nd–3rd lactations, selected using matched pairs method. The blood samples were taken 3 times: at the start of the lactation (2 days after parturition), at peak lactation performance (45 days after parturition) and before the interlactation period (4 months after parturition). Control group included 30 non-lactating Saanen goats, same age. The blood samples in control group animal were taken once. After analyzing the received data of antioxidant system characteristics the free radical oxidation highest intensity were revealed at the start of the lactation and at peak lactation performance, which indicates the development of oxidative stress in this periods. Also antioxidant enzymes’ activity was reduced during the peak lactation performance and remained at the control group level at the start of the lactation. This indicates free radical oxidation processes decompensation during the peak lactation performance. Thus, due to the development of decompensated oxidative stress in high milk producing ability animals during peak lactation, exogenous use of anti-oxidants is recommended.

We studied the intensity of lipid peroxidation (LPO) and the status of antioxidant system in blood of 6-60 months ostriches. We proved that specific functioning of the antioxidant system and the accumulation of lipid peroxidation intermediates characterized each period of ostrich life cycle. Thus, the period of puberty was accompanied by intensification of lipid peroxidation in ostrich blood serum and this was confirmed by a significant increase in the amount of TBA-reactive substances. This could be the consequence of the insufficient activity of enzymes of the antioxidant system (catalase, glutathione-S-transferase, glutathione reductase). The egg-laying peak was characterized by the increased body metabolism, which caused the activation of free-radical oxidation. The concentration of lipid hydroperoxides and diene conjugates increased and the TBA-reactive substances did not change significantly. Antioxidant protection of the blood during this period was mainly caused by the significant concentration of ceruloplasmin and reduced glutathione due to the increased activity of glutathione reductase. We supposed that the period of puberty and intensive period of egg laying in ostriches should be referred as the periods of stress of metabolic processes with increased intensity of lipid oxidation, associated with the certain changes in ostrich physiological and functional state.

Recently, interest in the problem of free radical oxidation in biological membranes, which is directly related to both the normal functioning of cells and the occurrence, course and outcome of many pathological conditions, has increased again in clinical medicine. The aim was to determine the role and impact of antioxidant defense in boys with hypoandrogenism. The study involved 75 adolescents with hypoandrogenism aged 13–18 years, who underwent a complex of clinical and laboratory examinations. All patients were conducted complex of anthropometric research and determination of the degree of delayed puberty, laboratory and instrumental examination. Free radical oxidation was determined by the levels of malondialdehyde, conjugated dienes, carbonated proteins, superoxide dismutase and catalase in the serum, and restored glutathione and glutathione peroxidase in whole blood. Based on their determination, the coefficient of oxidative stress was calculated. Statistical processing of results was performed using parametric and nonparametric methods. The study of indicators of the free radical oxidation process found that adolescents with hypoandrogenism have multidirectional changes in the oxidation of proteins and lipids, namely: the level of conjugated dienes increases, the concentration of malondialdehyde remains at the level of the control group, and the level of carbonated proteins tends to decrease. As for the activity of antioxidant protection enzymes, a significant decrease in the level of glutathione peroxidase was detected, while the level of superoxide dismutase and catalase remained at the level of normative indicators. Oxidative stress accompanies and is one of the pathogenetic links in the formation or maintenance of the state of hypoandrogenism in boys. This requires the use of antioxidants, the complex of which must be selected individually.

Introduction. To date, age and sex differences have been established for many biochemical parameters. Gender differences in indicators for systems such as antioxidant, thiol-disulfide, oxidative stress and inflammation systems are absent or under study. The aim of the study was to identify gender differences in biochemical parameters reflecting the functioning of antioxidant systems of the body and free radical oxidation in workers of metallurgical production, in contact with harmful production factors.Materials and methods. The blood of men and women working at the metallurgical enterprise of the Nizhny Novgorod region (n=80) under the influence of a complex of physical and chemical production factors was studied. Total oxidative stress, total antioxidant capacity of serum, glutathione levels were studied by photometric biochemical methods. Levels of C-reactive protein and 8-hydroxy–2-deoxyguanosine were studied by ELISA.Results. The average amount of peroxides in the serum of women exceeded 1.6 times this figure in men. In the group of men, the content of 8-Ondg was higher by 26% (p=0.012), the level of GS-by 12% (p=0.019), the activity of SOD — by 1.5–2 times (p=0.0001), the level of CRP — by 2 times (p=0.008) compared to similar indicators in women.Conclusions. Studies of gender differences in workers under the influence of harmful production factors will allow more effective approach to the etiology, treatment and prognosis of production-related diseases. Indicators of oxidative stress and antioxidant protection can be indicators of the health of workers under the influence of harmful industrial factors and be important in the prevention of diseases associated with oxidative stress.

The effect of individual components of humic substances of peloid on free radical oxidation processes has been investigated under conditions of oxidative stress induced in albino rats. Biological activity of peloids was determined using such parameters as the general antioxidant activity, activity superoxide dismutases, catalases and glutathione peroxidases on the third and tenth day of the experiment. Results indicate that the state of oxidative stress can be corrected on the third day of the experiment. Humic acids restore not only normal physiological redox systems, but also increase the activity of antioxidant enzymes on the 10th day.

Complex research into biochemical aspects of the functioning of the antioxidant system for the protection of sperm of the breeding boars has established that the intensity of the flow of peroxide oxidation of lipids in germ cells is much higher than in the extracellular space. Reactions of free radical peroxide oxidation of proteins and lipids in the semen of healthy breeding boars are characterized by a stable level of activity that is necessary for the normal course of implementation of processes of the reproductive function. All components of the antioxidant system stay in mutual compensatory ratios under physiological conditions. As a rule, reducing the concentration or activity of some antioxidant enzymes leads to corresponding changes in others. The main antioxidants of the germ cell genomes are superoxide dismutase and ceruloplasmin. Catalase is a key enzyme that neutralizes H2O2 in the semen fluid of breeding boars. The content of total proteins in the semen of the synthetic line SS23 animals is greater (p < 0.05) than in the breeding boars of the large white breed. The processes of the oxidative modification of proteins in the animals body of the synthetic line runs more intensely, as it is evidenced by the higher content of the aldehyde and ketodinitrophenyl hydrazones of the main and neutral character in the sperm cytoplasm.

Background. Acetaminophen is a drug used to relieve pain syndrome. It is used both independently and in composition of combined drugs. Type 2 diabetes is an age-related disease that is associated with a violation of insulin synthesis by pancreas.Objective. The aim of the research was to study the effect of acetaminophen on major free radical oxidation indices of rats with type 2 diabetes mellitus in time dynamics.Methods. We conducted two series of experiments. The first series comprised rats with type 2 diabetes mellitus and acute acetaminophen toxic lesions. The second series involved rats with type 2 diabetes mellitus and acetaminophen administration at a dose of 55 mg/kg for the period of 7 days.Results. Administration of acetaminophen for rats with type 2 diabetes mellitus caused the increase in the content of malondialdehyde, diene and triene conjugates and Schiff bases in blood plasma and malondialdehyde, diene and triene conjugates in liver homogenate. The maximum increase in these indices was observed on the first day of the experiment. Gradually these indices decreased on the 3rd, 5th and 7th days of the experiment.Conclusions. Free radical oxidation increased in both series of the experiment. This process developed in rats with type 2 diabetes mellitus and acute acetaminophen toxic lesions more intensively, than in rats with type 2 diabetes mellitus and administration of acetaminophen at the highest therapeutic dose during 7 days.
