ABSTRACT Galactic novae and supernovae can be studied by utilizing historical observations, yielding explosion time, location on sky, etc. Recent publications by Hoffmann & Vogt present CVs (Cataclysmic Variables), supernova remnants, planetary nebulae, etc. as potential counterparts based on their list of historically reported transients from the Classical Chinese text corpus. Since their candidate selection neglects the state-of-the-art (e.g. Stephenson & Green), and since it includes ‘broom stars’ and ‘fuzzy stars’, i.e. probable comets, we investigate their catalogue in more detail. We discuss here their two highlights, the suggestion of two ‘broom star’ records dated ad 667 and 668 as one historical supernova and of the ‘guest star’ of ad 891 as recurrent nova U Sco. The proposed positional search areas are not justified due to translation and dating problems, source omission, as well as misunderstandings of historical Chinese astronomy and unfounded textual interpretations. All sources together provide strong evidence for comet sightings in both ad 668 and 891 – e.g. there are no arguments for stationarity. The ad 667 record is a misdated doublet of 668. Our critique pertains more generally to their whole catalogue of ‘24 most promising events’: their speculations on counterparts lack a solid foundation and should not be used in follow-ups.

AbstractThe total number of true, likely and possible planetary nebulae (PN) now known in the Milky Way is about 3000, approximately twice the number known a decade ago. The new discoveries are a legacy of the recent availability of wide-field, narrowband imaging surveys, primarily in the light of Hα. The two most important are the AAO/UKST SuperCOSMOS Hα survey SHS and the Isaac Newton photometric Hα survey IPHAS, which are responsible for most of the new discoveries. A serious problem with previous PN catalogs is that several different kinds of astrophysical objects are able to mimic PN in some of their observed properties leading to significant contamination. These objects include H~II regions and Strömgren zones around young O/B stars, reflection nebulae, Wolf-Rayet ejecta, supernova remnants, Herbig-Haro objects, young stellar objects, B[e] stars, symbiotic stars and outflows, late-type stars, cataclysmic variables, low redshift emission-line galaxies, and even image/detector flaws. PN catalogs such as the Macquarie/AAO/Strasbourg Hα Planetary Nebula catalog (MASH) have been carefully vetted to remove these mimics using the wealth of new wide-field multi-wavelength data and our 100% follow-up spectroscopy to produce a compilation of new PN discoveries of high purity. During this process significant numbers of PN mimics have been identified. The aim of this project is to compile these MASH rejects into a catalog of Miscellaneous Emission Nebulae (MEN) and to highlight the most unusual and interesting examples. A new global analysis of these MEN objects is underway before publishing the MEN catalog online categorizing objects by type together with their spectra and multi-wavelength images.

Recently, there has been an increasing interest in identifying named entities with nested structures. Existing models only make independent typing decisions on the entire entity span while ignoring strong modification relations between sub-entity types. In this paper, we present a novel Recursively Binary Modification model for nested named entity recognition. Our model utilizes the modification relations among sub-entities types to infer the head component on top of a Bayesian framework and uses entity head as a strong evidence to determine the type of the entity span. The process is recursive, allowing lower-level entities to help better model those on the outer-level. To the best of our knowledge, our work is the first effort that uses modification relation in nested NER task. Extensive experiments on four benchmark datasets demonstrate that our model outperforms state-of-the-art models in nested NER tasks, and delivers competitive results with state-of-the-art models in flat NER task, without relying on any extra annotations or NLP tools.

The european X-ray observatory (EXOSAT), which was launched in 1983 and which finished operations in April 1986, has brought a rich harvest of results in the period 1984-1987, surveyed here. The EXOSAT payload consisted of three sets of instruments: two low energy imaging telescopes (LE:E<2 KeV), a medium-energy experiment (ME:E=l-50KeV) and a gas scintillation proportional counter (GSPC:E=2-20KeV). Over most of the energy range covered, EXOSAT was not more sensitive than its predecessor, the american EINSTEIN satellite. But the EINSTEIN satellite is far from having exhausted the treasures of the X-ray sky. And EXOSAT, thanks to its elliptical 90-hour orbit, had the extra advantage of being able to make long, continuous observations of interesting objects, lasting up to 72 hours. Thus, EXOSAT was very well suited for variability studies, and many of its most important findings are in this area. EXOSAT observations sample a vide range of astrophysical sources: X-ray binaries, cataclysmic variables and active stars; supernova remnants and the interstellar medium; active galactic nuclei, and clusters of galaxies. AbstractWe present radio and optical images of the shell-like remnant of the 1901 outburst of Nova GK Persei. The behaviour of this object is remarkably similar to supernova remnants. The synchrotron radiation-emitting shell is polarized with the magnetic field oriented radially, as in young SNR’s. This similarity plus extensive data we have acquired on the expansion and the interstellar environment of GK Per indicate that the nova shell is colliding with ambient gas whose density is substantially higher than the ISM.Furthermore, there is strong evidence that the ambient gas is circumstellar rather than interstellar, and that this material is the shell of an ancient planetary nebula associated with the white dwarf companion of GK Per.

ABSTRACT Accurate distance estimates of astrophysical objects such as planetary nebulae (PNe), and nova and supernova remnants, among others, allow us to constrain their physical characteristics, such as size, mass, luminosity, and age. An innovative technique based on the expansion parallax method, the so-called distance mapping technique (DMT), provides distance maps of expanding nebulae as well as an estimation of their distances. The DMT combines the tangential velocity vectors obtained from 3D morpho-kinematic models and the observed proper motion vectors to estimate the distance. We applied the DMT to four PNe (NGC 6702, NGC 6543, NGC 6302, and BD+30 3639) and one nova remnant (GK Persei) and derived new distances in good agreement with previous studies. New simple morpho-kinematic shape models were generated for NGC 6543, NGC 6302, and NGC 6702, whereas for BD+30 3639 and GK Persei published models were used. We demonstrate that the DMT is a useful tool to obtain distance values of PNe, in addition to revealing kinematically peculiar regions within the nebulae. Distances are also derived from the trigonometric Gaia parallaxes. The effect of the non-negligible parallax offset in the second Gaia data release is also discussed.

We analyse the population of PNe and links between binary PNNi and stars which are in the later evolutionary stages. In a model which assumes that all stars are born in binaries, about 16% of PN result from ejection of common envelopes in close binaries, 85% of single PNNi are formed by merger of components of binaries. In the model, 5% of PNNi may be precataclysmic binaries, 5% may be precursors of symbiotic stars, 0.4% may be pre-SN Ia, 0.1% - precursors of hydrogen-deficient giants. About 0.1% of all PNe may be hydrogen-deficient.

Very hot central stars (CSPN) of highly excited planetary nebulae (PN) display directly the formation of white dwarfs. Only a few of these CSPN have been analyzed so far due to their low brightness and thus, the interpretation of their evolutionary status is hampered by statistical incompleteness. In the last decade many spectral analyses of very hot post-AGB stars by means of state-of-the-art NLTE model atmospheres have been performed (e.g. Rauch et al. 1996; Werner & Rauch 1994; Rauch & Werner 1995) and our picture of post-AGB evolution has been improved.

AbstractThe X-ray observatory EXOSAT spent over 1000 hours observing cataclysmic variables. Some of the major results reviewed here are: soft X-ray light curve changes in AM Her objects, orbital effects in the X-ray light curves of intermediate polars and U Gem, regular behaviour in the inter-outburst X-ray flux of VW Hyi, and X-ray emission from the tenuous remnant of the recent recurrent nova RS Oph. The ability of EXOSAT to make long uninterupted observations at high sensitivity over a broad spectral range and to react quickly to cosmic events has yielded a dataset of a quality that will not be surpassed for many years.
