Visuals are more than just a tool to explain your research; they are also a way to engage your audiences emotionally and persuade them of the value of your work. It is very useful to invest in high-quality, evergreen visuals for multiple communication uses. These high-quality tables, graphs, illustrations, and animations will pay off in both the short and long term, despite the effort and cost. Not only will they enhance your research communication, but they will also teach you the “visual language” that will serve you throughout your career. Techniques for creating informative graphs and charts can greatly improve presentations and publications. Also important are informative illustrations and animations, and new technologies of virtual and augmented reality offer a promising route to effective, engaging communication.

High-quality early care and education can mitigate the short- and long-term effects of poverty on young children’s development. Therefore, policies that expand access to high-quality early care and education can be an effective anti-poverty strategy. A number of programs demonstrably foster volitional processes of self-regulation—the capacity to control emotions, thoughts, and behaviors—among young children in poverty. However, relatively little is known about how the activity of the neurophysiological systems that form the interface between brain and body supports these processes of self-regulation in early care and education settings. Maximizing the efficacy of early care and education as an anti-poverty strategy requires adopting policies to advance three interrelated goals: understanding, accommodating, and reconfiguring young children’s neurophysiological function in the early care and education environment.

Acute kidney injury complicates over 50% of critical care admissions and is associated with both increased short and long-term mortality and the development or acceleration of chronic kidney disease. While in certain settings, such as cardiac surgery, primary prevention of AKI is possible, in most cases AKI is present or evolving at intensive care unit admission and the main clinical focus is secondary prevention of further kidney injury. In the absence of evidence for specific AKI-targeted therapies, high quality supportive care to maximize hemodynamic stability and avoidance of secondary sources of kidney injury are the cornerstones of renal protection. Fluid overload is particularly associated with adverse outcomes in critical illness complicated by AKI. Continuous methods of renal replacement therapy may promote hemodynamic stability and have been associated with better longer term renal outcomes.

Abstract Issue/problem National healthcare systems worldwide are at a critical point due to the fiscal sustainability challenges faced. At the same time, healthcare systems are under pressure to meet the global demand for adaptation of medical innovations arriving into the market persistently. Description of the problem Hospitals often serve as the entry point for new technologies to the healthcare system. It is therefore extremely important that Health Technology Assessments (HTA) are available in timely order to accurately inform decision-makers on both short- and long-term effects of a health technology to avoid inappropriate investments. Hospital based HTA (HB-HTA) was developed to accommodate the need for evidence-based hospital-specific information in a timely manner. A substantial increase in the use of HB-HTA has been observed in the last years. However, only few reports are being published. A database for the structured collection of HB-HTA reports could help the dissemination and collaboration between hospitals. Effects/changes A survey answered by an international group of experts knowledgeable in HB-HTA from eighteen different countries has showed that there is an interest to realize the collection and dissemination of HB-HTA reports on an international scale. However, confidentiality and resources for a database are barriers for the dissemination of HB-HTA reports. The challenge will therefore be to overcome these barriers and design a database containing high quality, comparable and complete HB-HTA reports with proper data security, regular maintenance and user support. Lessons International collaboration in HB-HTA is the key to timely inform decision-makers without compromising the quality of the data or the methodology.

Synapses that can be strengthened in temporary and persistent manners by two separate mechanisms are shown to have powerful advantages in neural networks that perform auto-associative recall and recognition. A multiplicative relation between the two weights allows the same set of connections to be used in a closely interactive way for short-term and long-term memory. Algorithms and simulations are described for the storage, consolidation and recall of patterns that have been presented only once to a network. With double modifiability, the short-term performance is dramatically improved, becoming almost independent of the amount of long-term experience. The high quality of short-term recall allows consolidation to take place, with benefits from the selection and optimization of long term engram s to take account of relations between stored patterns. Long-term capacity is greater than short-term capacity, with little or no deficit compared with that, obtained with singly modifiable synapses. Long-term recall requires special, simply implemented, procedures for increasing the temporary weights of the synapses being used to initiate recall. A consolidation algorithm is described for improving long-term recall when there is overlap between patterns. Confusional errors are reduced by strengthening the associations between non-overlapping elements in the patterns, in a two-stage process that has several of the characteristics of sleep.

Virtual reality and augmented reality have become increasingly prevalent in our lives. They are changing the way we see and interact with the world and have started percolating medical education. In this article, we reviewed key applications of virtual and augmented realities in neurology and neuroscience education, and discussed barriers and opportunities for implementation in the curriculum. Although long-term benefits of these approaches over more traditional learning methods and the optimal curricular balance remain mostly unexplored, virtual and augmented reality can change how we teach neurology and neuroscience.

The widespread increase in morbidity and the registration of major measles outbreaks in recent years require the development of new technologies to control the infection. Technologies should be based on the prognosis of morbidity. The aim of the study was to predict the development of the situation in the near and long term in order to determine the adequate technologies of infection control in the metropolis at the stage of its elimination on the basis of a mathematical simulation of the epidemic process of measles. Materials and methods. A simulation model to forecast the incidence of measles was developed using special software AnyLogic Professional 7.0. The model included the main determinants of the epidemic process, established by the results of their own research and literature data. The results of the epidemic process modeling were uploaded to the database. Further work was carried out in the database management system Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio. Analysis and graphical processing of the results are performed using comprehensive software for business intelligence Power BI. Results. It is established that at low (50-60%) coverage of vaccinations of children in the decreed ages and the population as a whole, the probability of measles outbreaks is high both in the short and long term. The increase in vaccination coverage to 90-95% leads to an increase in the period of epidemic well-being, but the likelihood of an outbreak remains. With revaccination every 10 years, at least 60% of the population remains stable for 30 years and the spread of infection does not occur. With the coverage of revaccinating vaccinations 80% of the population-the epidemiological situation remains stable for 50 years. Conclusion. The simulation model of measles morbidity forecast for the near and long term, built with the main determinants of the epidemic process, allows us to predict the development of the epidemic situation in the territory of a large industrial city. Also, the model allows to determine the priority areas for the elimination of measles infection, namely: strict control of the timeliness and completeness of vaccination coverage of children in the decreed age (at least 95%) and maintaining a high immune layer of the population as a whole, which can be provided during the planned revaccination against measles every 10 years.

A medical trend which is currently gaining strength includes the complex treatment based on the concept of «fast-track» recovery in oncology. An application of modern high-tech approaches allowed minimizing the terms of treatment, shortening economic costs and getting the highest final results. It provides a high quality treatment. Given method could exclude an interim treatment stages, sufficiently reduces terms of general treatment and rehabilitation of patients and could succeed in high quality of life for the patients in short- and long-term period. The authors present the results of successful clinical surgery of 78 patients using this method in public health.

Environmental degradation and its severe impact on human health has revealed the necessity for effective educational interventions. Given the importance of “Environment,” “Health,” and “Education,” as key pillars for the achievement of sustainable development, the education for environmental health is evolving into a main component of current strategies against environmental health threats, such as climate change and urban air pollution. Environmental Health Education, which must be considered as a strategical response against environmental degradation, offers vast capacity for innovation alongside every educational stage. For instance, the application of new technologies, such as virtual and augmented reality applications, the adoption of innovative interdisciplinary educational approaches, and the incorporation of Arts are evolving into a new era’s educational perspectives. All the new trends in formal, non-formal and informal Environmental Health Education should be captured and assessed, in favor of protecting both local and global natural environment, human and animal health, and promoting sustainability.
