Thin Objects

Are there objects that are “thin” in the sense that their existence does not make a substantial demand on the world? Frege famously thought so. He claimed that the equinumerosity of the knives and the forks suffices for there to be objects such as the number of knives and the number of forks, and for these objects to be identical. The idea of thin objects holds great philosophical promise but has proved hard to explicate. This book attempts to develop the needed explanations by drawing on some Fregean ideas. First, to be an object is to be a possible referent of a singular term. Second, singular reference can be achieved by providing a criterion of identity for the would-be referent. The second idea enables a form of easy reference and thus, via the first idea, also a form of easy being. Paradox is avoided by imposing a predicativity restriction on the criteria of identity. But the abstraction based on a criterion of identity may result in an expanded domain. By iterating such expansions, a powerful account of dynamic abstraction is developed.

In each instance of its use, “I” refers to just one individual: the individual currently saying the sentence or thinking the proposition in which “I” (or, as the case may be, the first-person inflection of the verb) is in use. At the same time, having available the concept and word “I” is understanding that any other person using “I” thereby refers to herself, the thinker or speaker. Moreover, uses of “I” are not necessarily the expression of an egoistic obsession with our individual person. Some of the sentences in which “I” is in use display a striking combination of the singular character of the word and concept “I” and the universality of the claim we make on others, using the singular term and concept “I.” The chapter explores these contrasting features of “I” in relation to our cognitive and agential access to the world.

This article presents works on Deaf culture and language and disability topics of interest to anthropologists, particularly sociocultural and linguistic anthropologists. While some of the work here comes directly out of the field of anthropology, including work in anthropology on disability and medical anthropology, other works are from interdisciplinary fields such as Deaf studies and disability studies. This review includes Literature Reviews and Encyclopedias, Theory, Anthologies, Ethnographies, and Memoirs and then two sections focusing on topics of particular interest to disability and Deaf studies scholars: Education, and Science, Ethics, and Eugenics. Finally, Journals and Web Resources are also listed. While disability studies and Deaf studies are closely related, they have different emphases, something reflected in the different categories of this article. Disability studies work often looks at the relationship between society and individuals. British disability work has a particularly strong societal emphasis including government policies and institutional practices around issues such as infrastructure and the environment. American disability studies emphasize more cultural issues including attitudes and artistic endeavors but still at a society-wide level. Concurrent with this focus on larger social structures are the individual stories of people living within societies. These individual stories are reflected in the numerous memoirs in the discipline. What British and American approaches share is a view of the social construction of disability, that society disables people by creating contexts where people cannot function or are excluded. The most obvious social constraints are physical issues such as sidewalks with no curb cuts that impede wheelchair users’ mobility but can range from issues of stigma connected to disability to the rejection of neurodiversity. There is a great deal of interest in the field in intersectionality, and the cross-cutting currents of disability, gender, race, sexuality, and class, all of which manifest at both the social and individual level. Part of this interest is a growing awareness of disability in the Global South. While disability studies often focuses on individuals and institutions, Deaf studies frequently centers around language and community issues. Seminal works in Deaf studies were linguistic descriptions of American Sign Language and other sign languages around the world. Each sign language was seen as a core part of the culture of what are often tight-knit communities brought together by common schooling, common experiences of discrimination, and a strong sense of history. There is interest in the field in both intracultural variation and intercultural variation, looking at Deaf cultures around the world. More recently, authors have also begun to focus on phenomenology and ontological issues. Note: Language within both disability studies and Deaf studies is contentious and differs according to scholarly community and author. This article uses the singular term “disability” when referring to disability studies or the concept of disability but the plural when referring to “people with disabilities.” This article also uses the capital version “Deaf” as a default, but some authors use other forms including “deaf” generally or distinguishing between “deaf individuals with hearing loss” and “Deaf culture.” Another form sometimes used is d/Deaf, which refers to both hearing loss and culture. Usage in all bibliographic entries attempts to follow that of the authors.

An approach to thin objects is developed by exploring and developing some Fregean ideas—regardless of whether Frege himself would have agreed with this development. This approach is structured around three concepts central to philosophical logic and metaphysics—object, reference, and criterion of identity. Frege sought to connect these three concepts. First, to be an object is just to be a possible referent of a singular term. An undemanding account of reference will thus ensure an undemanding form of existence, i.e. thin objects. Next, reference can be constituted by providing a criterion of identity for the would-be referent. This is an undemanding account of reference. In this way we obtain a Frege-inspired approach to thin objects.

This chapter identifies two lines of resolution in the mathematical antinomies, which lines, it argues, correspond to two traditional ways of attempting to generate counter-examples to the law of excluded middle. One line involves positing an instance of category clash, the other the suggestion that ‘the world’ is a non-referring singular term. The upshot, in either case, is that the thesis and antithesis are not contradictories but merely contraries (and both are false). The chapter criticizes, and then charitably reformulates, Kant’s indirect argument for Transcendental Idealism. It considers why Kant did not seek to resolve the antinomies by arguing that thesis or antithesis are nonsense. Also discussed are: reductio proofs in philosophy (and Kant’s attitude toward them, which is argued to be more sympathetic than is often supposed), regresses ad infinitum and ad indefinitum; the cosmological syllogism; the sceptical representation; the Lambert analogy, the indifferentists; and the comparison with Zeno.

"The purpose of this paper is to introduce the notions of mediational fields and dynamic situated senses as a way to identify the structure of experiences, thoughts and their relations. To reach this purpose I draw some lessons from the debate between Dreyfus and McDowell about the structure of experience, from Cussins’s conception of mediational contents, and from Evans’s account of singular senses. I notice firstly that McDowell’s answer to Dreyfus consists in developing a practical and demonstrative notion of the products of our conceptual capacities. A conception that entails that human experience is not entirely characterised in terms of an abstract specification of truth-conditions. McDowell and Cussins endorse Evans’s conception of singular senses. A specification that takes into account the dynamic and situated abilities involved in making reference. Whereas the first argues in favour of a conceptual conception of experience, the second one argues in favour of a nonconceptual conception. I introduce the notions of mediational fields and dynamic situated senses to argue that both converge in conceiving the contents of experience as mediational and not reducible to an abstract specification of truth-conditions. My proposal is to define a bidimensional space orthogonal to the conceptual/ nonconceptual, experience/thought, know-how/know-that dichotomies. Cognitive contents are ways to disclose the world both as mediational fields and as referential structures. The degree in which those elements are presented determine different varieties of cognition. I use the previous notions to develop the sketch of an account of singular, objective and contextual ways of cognition, and to argue that it is better to begin an enquiry about cognition with notions that do not presuppose a distinction between practical and intellectual capacities. Furthermore, all psychologists can relate to its ultimate aim set out by William James: to study mental processes that provide explanations for why people behave as they do in the world.

Abstract Culture shapes our basic sensory experience of the world. This is particularly striking in the study of religion and psychosis, where we and others have shown that cultural context determines both the structure and content of hallucination-like events. The cultural shaping of hallucinations may provide a rich case-study for linking cultural learning with emerging prediction-based models of perception.

Abstract Hoerl & McCormack argue that animals cannot represent past situations and subsume animals’ memory-like representations within a model of the world. I suggest calling these memory-like representations as what they are without beating around the bush. I refer to them as event memories and explain how they are different from episodic memory and how they can guide action in animal cognition.

AbstractFe XIV 530.3 nm coronal emission line observations have been used for the estimation of the green solar corona rotation. A homogeneous data set, created from measurements of the world-wide coronagraphic network, has been examined with a help of correlation analysis to reveal the averaged synodic rotation period as a function of latitude and time over the epoch from 1947 to 1991.The values of the synodic rotation period obtained for this epoch for the whole range of latitudes and a latitude band ±30° are 27.52±0.12 days and 26.95±0.21 days, resp. A differential rotation of green solar corona, with local period maxima around ±60° and minimum of the rotation period at the equator, was confirmed. No clear cyclic variation of the rotation has been found for examinated epoch but some monotonic trends for some time intervals are presented.A detailed investigation of the original data and their correlation functions has shown that an existence of sufficiently reliable tracers is not evident for the whole set of examinated data. This should be taken into account in future more precise estimations of the green corona rotation period.
