Organizing and Managing Data Analytics Teams for Procurement

Many companies are forming data analytics teams to put data to work. To enhance procurement practices, chief procurement officers (CPOs) must work effectively with data analytics teams, from hiring and training to managing and utilizing team members. This chapter presents the findings of a study on how CPOs use data analytics teams to support the procurement process. Surveys and interviews indicate companies are exhibiting different levels of maturity in using data analytics, but both the goal of CPOs (i.e., improving performance to support the business strategy) and the way to interact with data analytics teams for achieving that goal are common across companies. However, as data become more reliably available and technologies become more intelligently embedded, the best practices of organizing and managing data analytics teams for procurement will need to be constantly updated.

This chapter explores how the community and the health programme can work together in selecting and training appropriate health team members at different levels of expertise. It identifies situations that require caution and understanding, and describes the project cycle. It outlines how to set up a project base, house staff, and identify security needs. It describes options for transport, how transport may be perceived by the local community, and includes questions that should be asked when considering buying a vehicle. It describes methods for ordering supplies, equipment vital to the project, and medicines that should be considered. Finally, it gives a range of ideas on how to fund a project, both from internal and external sources, and provides examples of each.

With the increasing share of digital transactions in the business, the way of operating the businesses has changed drastically, leading to an immense opportunity for achieving the operational excellence in the digital transactions. This chapter focusses on the ways of using data science to improve the operational efficiency of the last mile leg in the delivery shipments for e-commerce. Some of these avenues are predicting the attrition of field executives, identification of fake delivery attempts, reduction of mis-routing, identification of bad addresses, more effective resolution of weight disputes with the clients, reverse geo-coding for locality mapping, etc. The chapter also discusses the caution to be exercised in the use of data science, and the flip side of trying to quantify and dissect the phenomenon that is so complex and subjective in nature.

Interest in wisdom in the cognitive sciences, psychology, and education has been paralleled by conceptual confusions about its nature and assessment. To clarify these issues and promote consensus in the field, wisdom researchers met in Toronto in July of 2019, resolving disputes through discussion. Guided by a survey of scientists who study wisdom-related constructs, we established a common wisdom model, observing that empirical approaches to wisdom converge on the morally-grounded application of metacognition to reasoning and problem-solving. After outlining the function of relevant metacognitive and moral processes, we critically evaluate existing empirical approaches to measurement and offer recommendations for best practices. In the subsequent sections, we use the common wisdom model to selectively review evidence about the role of individual differences for development and manifestation of wisdom, approaches to wisdom development and training, as well as cultural, subcultural, and social-contextual differences. We conclude by discussing wisdom’s conceptual overlap with a host of other constructs and outline unresolved conceptual and methodological challenges.

This chapter looks briefly at the way judges are recruited in France and how and to what degree this is reflected in their way of reasoning and style of argument. It outlines the requirements for admission to the profession of being a judge in France and the methods adopted for training them. This outline is confined to professional judges, but it should be noted that, in France, commercial and employment cases are adjudicated at the first instance by lay judges. Further, judges in the administrative courts are not included in the teaching and training processes provided for by the École Nationale de la Magistrature (ENM). Administrative judges are recruited from the pool of high-ranking civil servants, many of them trained at the prestigious ENA (École Nationale d'Administration).

How do supervisors who treat the bottom line as more important than anything else influence team success? Drawing from social information processing theory, we explore how and when supervisor bottom-line mentality (i.e. an exclusive focus on bottom-line outcomes at the expense of other priorities) exerts influence on the bottom-line itself, in the form of team performance. We argue that a supervisor’s bottom-line mentality provides significant social cues for the team that securing bottom-line objectives is of sole importance, which stimulates team performance avoidance goal orientation, and thus decreases team performance. Further, we argue performing tension (i.e. tension between contradictory needs, demands, and goals), serving as team members’ mutual perception of the confusing environment, will strengthen the indirect negative relationship between supervisor bottom-line mentality and team performance through team performance avoidance goal orientation. We conduct a path analysis using data from 258 teams in a Chinese food-chain company, which provides support for our hypotheses. Overall, our findings suggest that supervisor’s exclusive focus on the bottom-line can serve to impede team performance. Theoretical contributions and practical implications are discussed.

Background Scales for evaluating insomnia differ in number of items, response format, and result in different scores distributions and score ranges and may not facilitate meaningful comparisons. Objectives Transform ordinal item-scores of three scales of insomnia to continuous, equidistant, monotonic, normally distributed scores, avoiding limitations of summative scoring of Likert scales. Methods Equidistant item-scores by weighted sum using data-driven weights to different levels of different items, considering cell frequencies of Item-Levels matrix, followed by normalization and conversion to [1, 10]. Equivalent test-scores (as sum of transformed item- scores) for a pair of scales were found by Normal Probability curves. Empirical illustration given. Results Transformed test-scores are continuous, monotonic and followed Normal distribution with no outliers and tied scores. Such test-scores facilitate ranking, better classification and meaningful comparison of scales of different lengths and formats and finding equivalent score combinations of two scales. For a given value of transformed test-score of a scale, easy alternate method avoiding integration proposed to find equivalent scores of another scales. Equivalent scores of scales help to relate various cut-off scores of different scales and uniformity in interpretations. Integration of various scales of insomnia is achieved by finding one-to-one correspondence among the equivalent score of various scales with correlation over 0.99 Conclusion Resultant test-scores facilitated undertaking analysis in parametric set up. Considering the theoretical advantages including meaningfulness of operations, better comparison, use of such method of transforming scores of Likert items/test is recommended test and items, Future studies were suggested.
