This article reports the findings of a scoping review of the use of small-sided games (SSGs) as a teaching or coaching pedagogy across four game categories. The selection criteria included empirical research available online, published after January 1 2006 and prior to December 31, 2016, in an academic journal. The data were analysed through an inductive thematic approach which generated two themes: Development and Practical considerations. This review found that SSGs can be used as a deliberate pedagogy to elicit physiological responses for a training effect. Given that the variables associated with SSGs include pitch size, game intensity, and number of players, a key determining factor in the implementation of SSGs includes the objective of the practice activity.

Forty-eight low-birth-weight, preterm graduates of the University of Washington's neonatal intensive care unit who had received periodic, serial scanning by means of cranial ultrasonography during the first 4 to 6 weeks of life were longitudinally observed in an interdisciplinary neurodevelopmental follow-up program to a mean corrected age of 18 months. Mean birth weight for the sample was 1286 g; mean gestational age was 29 weeks. Periventricular echodensities were graded from 0 to 3, with 0 indicating no densities and 3 indicating cystic formation. Intracranial hemorrhage was graded in the conventional manner from 0 to IV. Neurodevelopmental outcome was assessed by means of a neurologic examination and the Bayley Scales of Infant Development. To synthesize the results, neurodevelopmental outcome for each subject was classified as normal, demonstrating minor abnormalities, or demonstrating major abnormalities. Multiple statistical analyses with various subgroupings of subjects consistently indicated severe intracranial hemorrhage (grades III and/or IV) to be a better predictor of overall neurodevelopmental outcome than grade of periventricular echodensity, including small cysts. These results suggest a wide range of outcomes after detection of periventricular echodensities and caution against communicating overly pessimistic prognoses in many cases.

Background. Policy has direct bearing on occupational therapy practice and is a key dimension of the environment. To date, there has not been a synthesis of how policy is addressed in the occupational therapy literature. Purpose. The purpose of this review is to identify and analyze the ways that policy is addressed in the occupational therapy literature. Method. We conducted a scoping review of literature on policy and occupational therapy. Articles were analyzed deductively using a policy framework and inductively to identify overarching themes. Findings. Sixty-four papers were included for analysis. We present the descriptive information of the included articles according to policy type, sphere of action, stage of policy development, level, and actors. The qualitative analysis uncovered two broad concepts: “awareness” about the relationship between policy and practice and messages pertaining to “action.” Implications. There are numerous areas for further research into the policy–occupational therapy nexus, as policy has numerous pathways to shape practice. Practitioners will benefit from better understanding these pathways and actively engaging to align policy with the values of the profession.
