A novel Gram-staining-positive, endospore-forming, rod-shaped, facultatively anaerobic, thermotolerant bacterium, designated strain MO-04T, was isolated from a marine animal resources (MAR) compost. The 16S rRNA gene sequence of strain MO-04T showed 99.4 % similarity with Bacillus thermolactis R-6488T, 94.1 % similarity with Bacillus thermoamylovorans CNCM I-1378T, 93.3 % similarity with Bacillus humi LMG 22167T, 93.2 % similarity with Bacillus niacini IFO 15566T and the similarities with other species were less than 93 %. DNA–DNA relatedness between strain MO-04T and B. thermolactis DSM 23332T was 45 %. The DNA G+C content of strain MO-04T was 33.4 mol%, comparatively lower than that of B. thermolactis R-6488T (35.0 mol%). Strain MO-04T grew at 35–61 °C (optimum 50 °C), pH 4.5–9.0 (optimum pH 7.2) and tolerated up to 8.0 % (w/v) NaCl (optimum 2 %). The MO-04T cell wall peptidoglycan type was meso-2,6-diaminopimelic acid, and the major fatty acids were C16 : 1, C14 : 1, C17 : 0 and C17 : 1. The major polar lipids were represented by diphosphatidylglycerol and phosphatidylglycerol and two unidentified phospholipids. The analysed polyphasic data presented here clearly indicate that the isolate MO-04T is considered to represent a novel species within the genus Bacillus for which the name Bacillus kokeshiiformis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain of B. kokeshiiformis is MO-04T ( = JCM 19325T = KCTC 33163T).

A novel Gram-staining-positive, rod-shaped, motile, strictly aerobic, endospore-forming bacterium, designated WCC 4585T, was isolated from a pharmaceutical production line. The organism grew optimally at 30 °C, at pH 8 and in the presence of 0.5 % (w/v) NaCl. Oval endospores were formed subterminally and terminally in swollen sporangia. The cell-wall diamino acid was meso-diaminopimelic acid (type A1γ) and the genomic DNA G+C content was 38.7 mol%. The major menaquinone was MK-7. The cellular fatty acid profile contained major amounts of iso-C15 : 0, anteiso-C15 : 0 and anteiso-C17 : 0, and the cellular phospholipids were diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine and aminophospholipid. The isolate was most closely related to Bacillus oceanisediminis H2T, Bacillus infantis SMC 4352-1T, Bacillus firmus NCIMB 9366T, Bacillus circulans ATCC 4513T and Bacillus horneckiae DSM 23495T with which it shared less than 98.0 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity. DNA–DNA relatedness values between strain WCC 4585T and five type strains of related species were ≤27 % and sequence similarity values based on groEL sequences were ≤88.7 %. On the basis of the characteristics presented, strain WCC 4585T is proposed to represent a novel species, Bacillus gottheilii sp. nov. The type strain is WCC 4585T( = DSM 23668T = CCUG 59876T = LMG 25856T).

A Gram-staining-positive actinobacterium, designated strain 1MR-8T, was isolated from the rhizoplane of ginseng and its taxonomic status was determined using a polyphasic approach. The isolate formed long chains of spores that were straight, cylindrical and smooth-surfaced. Strain 1MR-8T grew at 10–37 °C (optimum 28 °C), whilst no growth was observed at 45 °C. The pH range for growth was 4.0–11.0 (optimum pH 6.0–8.0) and the NaCl range for growth was 0–7 % (w/v) with optimum growth at 1 % (w/v). Strain 1MR-8T had cell-wall peptidoglycans based on ll-diaminopimelic acid. Glucose, mannose and ribose were the whole-cell sugars. The predominant isoprenoid quinones were MK-9 (H4), MK-9 (H6) and MK-9 (H8) and the major fatty acids were anteiso-C15 : 0, iso-C15 : 0, anteiso-C17 : 0 and iso-C16 : 0. 16S rRNA gene sequencing studies showed that the novel strain was closely related to the type strains of Streptomyces caeruleatus GIMN4T, Streptomyces curacoi NRRL B-2901T, Streptomyces capoamus JCM 4734T and Streptomyces coeruleorubidus NBRC 12761T with similarities of 98.8 %. However, DNA–DNA relatedness, as well as physiological and biochemical analyses, showed that strain 1MR-8T could be differentiated from its closest phylogenetic relatives. It is proposed that this strain should be classified as a representative of a novel species of the genus Streptomyces , with the suggested name Streptomyces panaciradicis sp. nov. The type strain is 1MR-8T ( = KACC 17632T = NBRC 109811T).

A Gram-staining-positive, aerobic, non-motile bacterium, designated strain SJ5-8T, was isolated from seau-jeot (shrimp jeotgal), a traditional fermented seafood in South Korea. Cells were non-spore-forming rods showing catalase- and oxidase-positive reactions. Growth of strain SJ5-8T was observed at 10–37 °C (optimum, 30 °C), at pH 6.0–9.0 (optimum, pH 7.5–8.5) and in the presence of 0–14 % (w/v) NaCl (optimum, 5 %). Phylogenetic inference based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that the strain formed a tight phyletic lineage with members of the genus Brevibacterium . Strain SJ5-8T was most closely related to Brevibacterium yomogidense MN-6-aT, Brevibacterium daeguense 2C6-41T and Brevibacterium salitolerans TRM 415T with similarities of 98.9, 97.5 and 97.4 %, respectively. The DNA–DNA relatedness values between strain SJ5-8T and the type strains of B. yomogidense , B. daeguense and B. salitolerans were 51.7±1.9 %, 22.2±4.0 % and 52.4±3.8 %, respectively. Chemotaxonomic data (major sole isoprenoid quinone, MK-8(H2); major diagnostic diamino acid, meso-diaminopimelic acid; major polyamines, putrescine and cadaverine; major cellular fatty acids, anteiso-C15:0, iso-C15:0 and anteiso-C17:0; major polar lipids, phosphatidylglycerol and diphosphatidylglycerol; DNA G+C content, 69.3 mol%) also supported the affiliation of strain SJ5-8T to the genus Brevibacterium . Therefore, strain SJ5-8T represents a novel species of the genus Brevibacterium , for which the name Brevibacterium jeotgali sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is SJ5-8T ( = KACC 16911T = JCM 18571T).

A novel Gram-staining-positive, aerobic bacterium, designed DCY80T, was isolated from soil of a ginseng field in the Republic of Korea. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis revealed that strain DCY80T belonged to the genus Brachybacterium (95.8–98.2 % similarity) and was most closely related to Brachybacterium faecium DSM 4810T (98.2 %). Colonies were circular, entire, low-convex, opaque and 0.5–1.0 mm in diameter after growth for 2 days on TSA at 30 °C. Growth occurred at 4–34 °C (optimum, 25 °C), at pH 5.0–10.0 (optimum, pH 6.5–7.0) and in the presence of 0–7.0 % NaCl. Strain DCY80T produced siderophores and was sensitive to penicillin G, erythromycin, cefazolin, oleandomycin, ceftazidime, vancomycin, tetracycline, novobiocin, carbamicillin, rifampicin and neomycin. The DNA G+C content was 71.0 mol%. Levels of DNA–DNA relatedness between strain DCY80T and B. faecium DSM 4810T, B. paraconglomeratum KCTC 9916T, B. saurashtrense DSM 23186T and B. conglomeratum KCTC 9915T were 46.9±0.5, 28.9±0.6, 20.4±0.9 and 17.3±0.4 %, respectively. The cell-wall peptidoglycan of strain DCY80T contained meso-diaminopimelic acid as the diagnostic diamino acid. The menaquinones were MK-7 (85.8 %) and MK-8 (14.2 %). The major cellular fatty acids were anteiso-C15 : 0 (69.1 %) and anteiso-C17 : 0 (12.2 %). Phosphatidylglycerol, diphosphatidylglycerol, an unidentified glycolipid, two unidentified phospholipids and five unidentified polar lipids were found. On the basis of our phenotypic and genotypic analyses, strain DCY80T represents a novel species of the genus Brachybacterium , for which the name Brachybacterium ginsengisoli sp. nov. is proposed (type strain DCY80T = KCTC 29226T = JCM 19356T).

A novel actinobacterium, designated CFH 10395T, was isolated from the foregut of grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella), which had been fed with ginseng extract supplement. The taxonomic position was investigated by a polyphasic approach. Cells of CFH 10395T were Gram-staining-positive, aerobic, ovoid-shaped, non-spore-forming and non-motile. On the basis of the results of 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis, CFH 10395T was most closely related to Brachybacterium endophyticum KCTC 49087T, Brachybacterium squillarum JCM 16464T and Brachybacterium paraconglomeratum JCM 17781T (97.85%, 97.51 and 97.29% similarity, respectively). CFH 10395T grew at 4–37 °C, pH 5.0–9.0 and in the presence of up to 10.0 % NaCl (w/v). The dominant menaquinone was MK-7. The whole-cell sugars were rhamnose, glucose, mannose and galactose. meso-diaminopimelic acid was the diagnostic diamino acid in the cell-wall peptidoglycan. The major fatty acids were anteiso-C15 : 0, anteiso-C17 : 0 and iso-C16 : 0. The genome size was 3.99 Mbp with a DNA G+C content of 71.9 mol%. On the basis of the results of phylogenetic analysis, physiological properties, chemotaxonomic characteristics, low average nucleotide identity (ANI) and digital DDH (dDDH) results [ANI calculated using MUMmer (ANIm) <87 %, ANI calculated using blast (ANIb) <83 % and dDDH <23 %], it is concluded that CFH 10395T represents a novel species of the genus Brachybacterium , for which the name Brachybacterium subflavum sp. nov., is proposed. The type strain is CFH 10395T (=CGMCC 1.13804T=KCTC 49235T).

A Gram-staining-positive, aerobic, motile bacterium, designated strain MJ3T, was isolated from myeolchi-jeot (anchovy jeotgal), a traditional fermented seafood in South Korea. Cells were non-endospore-forming cocci showing catalase- and oxidase-positive reactions. Growth of strain MJ3T was observed at 15–45 °C (optimum, 30 °C), at pH 6.0–9.0 (optimum, pH 7.0–8.0) and in the presence of 1–24 % (w/v) NaCl (optimum, 10 % NaCl). Phylogenetic inference based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain MJ3T formed a tight phyletic lineage with members of the genus Salimicrobium . Strain MJ3T was related most closely to Salimicrobium salexigens 29CMIT, Salimicrobium album DSM 20748T, Salimicrobium flavidum ISL-25T, Salimicrobium luteum BY-5T and Salimicrobium halophilum DSM 4771T, with similarities of 98.8 %, 98.7 %, 98.6 %, 98.4 % and 98.3 %, respectively. However, the DNA–DNA relatedness values between strain MJ3T (KF732837) and S. salexigens DSM 22782T, S. album DSM 20748T, S. flavidum DSM 23127T, S. luteum KCTC 3989T and S. halophilum JCM 12305T were 60±5.4 %, 58.5±6.5 %, 43.6±5.5 %, 37.2±5.8 % and 16.7±0.2 %, respectively. Chemotaxonomic data (sole isoprenoid quinone, MK-7; major cell-wall type, meso-diaminopimelic acid; major cellular fatty acids, anteiso-C15 : 0, anteiso-C17 : 0 and iso-C15 : 0; major polar lipids, phosphatidylglycerol and diphosphatidylglycerol; DNA G+C content, 46.3 mol%) also supported the affiliation of strain MJ3T with the genus Salimicrobium . Therefore, strain MJ3T represents a novel species of the genus Salimicrobium , for which the name Salimicrobium jeotgali sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is MJ3T ( = KACC 16972T = JCM 19758T).

A Gram-staining-positive, motile, facultatively anaerobic, endospore-forming and rod-shaped bacterium, designated strain CJ32T, was isolated from ginseng soil at Geumsan in Korea. The isolate grew optimally at 30 °C, 2 % (w/v) NaCl and pH 7.0. Colonies of strain CJ32T were beige and circular with an entire margin on LB agar plates. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that strain CJ32T was associated with the genus Bacillus and was most closely related to Bacillus graminis YC6957T (97.3 % similarity) and Bacillus lentus IAM 12466T (97.1 %). DNA–DNA hybridization with closely related strains was below 31.3 %. The major respiratory isoprenoid quinone was MK-7. The diagnostic diamino acid in the cell-wall peptidoglycan was meso-diaminopimelic acid. The polar lipid profile of strain CJ32T consisted of phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol, diphosphatidylglycerol and several unidentified lipids, including phospholipids, aminolipids and aminophospholipids. The predominant fatty acids of strain CJ32T were iso-C15 : 0 and anteiso-C15 : 0. The G+C content of the genomic DNA was 35.1 mol%. Based on phenotypic, genotypic and phylogenetic data, strain CJ32T should be classified within a novel species of the genus Bacillus , for which the name Bacillus panacisoli sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is strain CJ32T ( = KACC 17503T = JCM 19226T).

Strain KIS2-16T was isolated from a soil sample collected from Daecheong Island of Incheon region, South Korea. KIS2-16T was Gram-staining-positive, aerobic, non-spore-forming, non-motile, catalase-positive, oxidase-negative and mesophilic. On the basis of 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis, strain KIS2-16T represented a member of the genus Nocardioides , being most closely related to the type strains of species of the genus Nocardioides , Nocardioides maradonensis RP-B30T (97.8 % sequence similarity) and Nocardioides ultimimeridianus RP-B26T (97.0 %). The fatty acid profile of KIS2-16T was dominated by C18 : 1ω9c, C17 : 1ω8c, C16 : 0, C18 : 0 10-methyl (TBSA), C16 : 0 2-OH and C17 : 0 2-OH. The major isoprenoid quinone was MK-8(H4), and the major polar lipids were diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol and phosphatidylinositol. The peptidoglycan structure was A3γ-type with ll-diaminopimelic acid. The genomic DNA G+C content of KIS2-16T was 64.9 mol%. Strain KIS2-16T showed DNA–DNA hybridization values of less than 70 % with the closely related species of the genus Nocardioides . Based on phenotypic, genotypic and phylogenetic data, the isolate represents a novel species of the genus Nocardioides , for which the name Nocardioides daecheongensis sp. nov. (type strain KIS2-16T = DSM 27136T = KACC 17297T = NBRC 109597T) is proposed.

A Gram-staining-positive, aerobic, non-motile, non-spore-forming and coccoid-shaped actinobacterial strain, designated YIM 730233T, was isolated from a sediment sample, collected from a hot spring in Tibet, China. Colonies were brownish, circular, smooth and convex. Strain YIM 730233T was able to grow in the temperature range of 20–50 °C, pH 6.5–8.0 and in the presence of up to 1.0 % (w/v) NaCl. A comparison of the 16S rRNA gene sequence of strain YIM 730233T with sequences of type strains of most closely related species of Marmoricola showed highest sequence similarities to Marmoricola bigeumensis MSL-05T (98.3%) and Marmoricola pocheonensis Gsoil 818T (98.1%). The draft genome of strain YIM 730233T had a size of 4 806 234 bp with a DNA G+C content of 72.1 mol%. The major fatty acids (>10 %) of strain YIM 730233T mainly consisted of iso-C16 : 0, anteiso-C17 : 0 and C18 : 1 ω9c, typical of the genus Marmoricola . Strain YIM 730233T had LL-2,6-diaminopimelic acid as the diagnostic diamino acid in the cell wall. The predominant isoprenoid quinone was MK-8(H4). The polar lipids were diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, unidentified phospholipids and an unidentified lipid. DNA–DNA hybridizations between strain YIM 730233T and type strains of Marmoricola bigeumensis MSL-05T and Marmoricola pocheonensis Gsoil 818T resulted in similarity values of 21 and 19% respectively. Based on DNA–DNA hybridization results, together with the differentiating biochemical and chemotaxonomic features, showed that strain YIM 730233T represents a novel Marmoricola species, for which the name Marmoricola caldifontis sp. nov. (type strain YIM 730233T=KCTC 49192T=CGMCC 4.7521T), is proposed.

A Gram-staining-positive actinobacterial strain, Chem10T, was isolated from soil around Inche-Broun hypersaline wetland in the north of Iran. Strain Chem10T was strictly aerobic, and catalase- and oxidase-positive. The isolate grew with 0–3 % NaCl, at 20–40 °C and at pH 6.0–8.0. The optimum temperature and pH for growth were 30 °C and pH 7.0, respectively. The cell wall of strain Chem10T contained meso-diaminopimelic acid as diamino acid and galactose, ribose and arabinose as whole-cell sugars. The polar lipid pattern contained diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol and phosphatidylethanolamine. Strain Chem10T synthesized cellular fatty acids of the straight-chain saturated and mono-unsaturated, and iso- and anteiso-branched types C14 : 0, C16 : 0, iso-C16 : 1, anteiso-C17 : 0, iso-C16 : 0, iso-C14 : 0 and iso-C15 : 0, and the major respiratory quinone was MK-9(H4). The G+C content of the genomic DNA was 70.7 mol%. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that strain Chem10T belonged to the family Pseudonocardiaceae and showed the closest phylogenetic similarity to Alloactinosynnema album KCTC 19294T (98.3 %) and Actinokineospora cibodasensis DSM 45658T (97.9 %). DNA–DNA relatedness values between the novel strain and strains Alloactinosynnema album KCTC 19294T and Actinokineospora cibodasensis DSM 45658T were only 52 % and 23 %, respectively. On the basis of phylogenetic analysis, phenotypic characteristics and DNA–DNA hybridization data, a novel species of the genus Alloactinosynnema is proposed, Alloactinosynnema iranicum sp. nov. The type strain is Chem10T ( = IBRC-M 10403T = CECT 8209T). In addition, an emended description of the genus Alloactinosynnema is proposed.
