Six strains (CB7T, CB18, CB23, CB26, CB28 and CB35T) were isolated from human faeces. Based on phylogenetic analysis, phenotypic characteristics, cellular fatty acid profiles and menaquinone profiles, these strains could be included within the genus Prevotella and made up two clusters. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis indicated that five strains were most closely related to Prevotella veroralis, sharing about 92 % sequence similarity; the remaining strain was most closely related to Prevotella shahii, sharing about 90 % sequence similarity. All six strains were obligately anaerobic, non-pigmented, non-spore-forming, non-motile, Gram-negative rods. The cellular fatty acid compositions of the six strains differed significantly from those of other Prevotella species. Five strains (CB7T, CB18, CB23, CB26 and CB28) contained dimethyl acetals and the major menaquinones of these strains were MK-11, MK-12 and MK-13. The major menaquinones of CB35T were MK-12 and MK-13. Based on phenotypic and phylogenetic findings, two novel species, Prevotella copri sp. nov. and Prevotella stercorea sp. nov., are proposed, representing the two different strain clusters. The DNA G+C contents of strains CB7T and CB35T were 45.3 and 48.2 mol%, respectively. The type strains of P. copri and P. stercorea are CB7T (=JCM 13464T=DSM 18205T) and CB35T (=JCM 13469T=DSM 18206T), respectively.

Five isolates, designated TA2, TA4, TA25T, KOxT and NS15T were isolated in previous studies by enrichment in mineral medium with potassium oxalate as the sole carbon source and were characterized using a polyphasic approach. The isolates were Gram-reaction-negative, aerobic, non-spore-forming rods. Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA and DNA gyrase B subunit (gyrB) gene sequences confirmed that the isolates belonged to the genus Pandoraea and were most closely related to Pandoraea sputorum and Pandoraea pnomenusa (97.2–99.7 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity). The isolates could be differentiated from their closest relatives on the basis of several phenotypic characteristics. The major cellular fatty acid profiles of the isolates comprised C16 : 0, C18 : 1ω7c, C17 : 0 cyclo and summed feature 3 (C16 : 1ω7c and/or iso-C15 : 0 2-OH). On the basis of DNA–DNA hybridization studies and phylogenetic analyses, the isolates represent three novel species within the genus Pandoraea, for which the names Pandoraea oxalativorans sp. nov. (TA25T  = NBRC 106091T  = CCM 7677T  = DSM 23570T), Pandoraea faecigallinarum sp. nov. (KOxT  = NBRC 106092T  = CCM 2766T  = DSM 23572T) and Pandoraea vervacti sp. nov. (NS15T  = NBRC 106088T  = CCM 7667T  = DSM 23571T) are proposed.

A Gram-stain-positive, rod-shaped, endospore-forming bacterium, strain CAU 9038T, was isolated from a tidal-flat sediment of DaeYiJac Island, Republic of Korea, and its taxonomic position was investigated using a polyphasic approach. The cell-wall peptidoglycan contained meso-diaminopimelic acid. The major polar lipids were diphosphatidylglycerol and phosphatidylglycerol, the major isoprenoid quinone was MK-7 and the dominant cellular fatty acid was anteiso-C15 : 0. The DNA G+C content was 51.6 mol%. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis showed that the strain belonged to the genus Paenibacillus, with <96.1 % sequence similarity to type strains of Paenibacillus species with validly published names. The most closely related type strains to CAU 9038T were Paenibacillus thailandensis S3-4AT (96.1 % similarity) and Paenibacillus agaridevorans DSM 1355T (95.3 %). The phenotypic, chemotaxonomic and genotypic data clearly indicated that strain CAU 9038T represents a novel species of the genus Paenibacillus, for which the name Paenibacillus chungangensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is CAU 9038T (=KCTC 13717T =CCUG 59129T).

Two Gram-negative, cold-adapted, aerobic bacteria, designated strains M8T and M6, were isolated from soil collected from the South Shetland Islands. The organisms were rod-shaped, catalase- and oxidase-positive and motile by means of polar flagella. These two psychrotolerant strains grew between −4 and 30 °C. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis placed strains M8T and M6 within the genus Pseudomonas. DNA–DNA hybridization experiments between the Antarctic isolate M8T and type strains of phylogenetically related species, namely Pseudomonas peli and Pseudomonas anguilliseptica, revealed levels of relatedness of 33 and 37 %, respectively. Strain M6 showed 99 % DNA similarity to strain M8T. Several phenotypic characteristics, together with data on cellular fatty acid composition, served to differentiate strains M8T and M6 from related pseudomonads. On the basis of the polyphasic taxonomic evidence presented in this study, it can be concluded that strains M8T and M6 belong to the same genospecies, representing a novel species of the genus Pseudomonas, for which the name Pseudomonas guineae sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is M8T (=LMG 24016T=CECT 7231T).

A novel Gram-stain-negative, rod-shaped, motile bacterium, designated strain AK21T, was isolated from coastal surface sea water at Visakhapatnam, India. The strain was positive for oxidase, catalase, lipase, l-proline arylamidase and tyrosine arylamidase activities. The predominant fatty acids were C12:0, C12:0 3-OH, C16:0, C16:1ω9c, C18:1ω9c and summed feature 3 (C16:1ω7c and/or iso-C15:0 2-OH). The polar lipids were diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol, one unidentified aminophospholipid, two unidentified phospholipids and one unidentified lipid. Q-10 was the predominant respiratory quinone. The DNA G+C content of the strain was 54.6 mol%. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis indicated that strain AK21T was a member of the genus Marinobacter and was closely related to Marinobacter xestospongiae, with pairwise sequence similarity of 97.2 % to the type strain, with similarity to other members of the genus of 94.0–96.8 %. The mean DNA–DNA relatedness of strain AK21T with M. xestospongiae JCM 17469T was 34.5 %, and relatedness with Marinobacter mobilis JCM 15154T was 40.5 %. Phylogenetic analysis showed that strain AK21T clustered with the type strains of M. xestospongiae and M. mobilis at distances of 2.9 and 2.8 % (97.1 and 97.2 % similarity), respectively. Based on the phenotypic characteristics and on phylogenetic inference, it appears that strain AK21T represents a novel species of the genus Marinobacter, for which the name Marinobacter nitratireducens sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain of Marinobacter nitratireducens is AK21T ( = MTCC 11704T = JCM 18428T).

A novel actinomycete, designated strain VN05A0561T, was isolated from plant litter collected at Ba Be National Park, Vietnam. The substrate mycelia and spore chains fragmented in a manner similar to nocardioform actinomycetes; the spores had smooth surfaces and were rod-shaped. Strain VN05A0561T had the following chemotaxonomic characteristics: meso-diaminopimelic acid in the cell-wall peptidoglycan, arabinose and galactose as characteristic sugars, MK-8(H4) as the major isoprenoid quinone, phosphatidylcholine as the diagnostic phospholipid and iso-C16 : 0 as the major cellular fatty acid. Strain VN05A0561T shared low levels of 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity (<97 %) with the type strains of recognized species of the genus Pseudonocardia and could be differentiated from its closest phylogenetic relatives based on phenotypic characteristics. These results suggested that strain VN05A0561T represents a novel species of the genus Pseudonocardia, for which the name Pseudonocardia babensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is VN05A0561T (=VTCC-A-1757T=NBRC 105793T).

Three Gram-negative, anaerobic, rod-shaped bacteria (strains CB40, CB41 and CB42T) were isolated from human faeces. Based on phylogenetic analysis and specific phenotypic characteristics, these strains were included in the genus Bacteroides, and 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis indicated that these strains represented a novel species. The strains were most closely related to the type strains of Bacteroides barnesiae and Bacteroides salanitronis, with sequence similarities of 93.4 and 89.8 %, respectively. The G+C content of strain CB42T is 44.7 mol%. Major fatty acids were anteiso-C15 : 0, C16 : 0, iso-C17 : 0 3-OH and C18 : 1 ω9c. On the basis of the data presented, a novel Bacteroides species, Bacteroides coprophilus sp. nov., is proposed, with CB42T (=JCM 13818T=DSM 18228T) as the type strain.

A novel aerobic, Gram-negative, motile, rod-shaped bacterial strain designated 5516S-2T was isolated from an air sample taken in Suwon, Republic of Korea. Colonies were yellow-pigmented and circular with entire margins. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis showed that strain 5516S-2T was closely related to Xylophilus ampelinus DSM 7250T (97.6 % sequence similarity), Variovorax soli KACC 11579T (97.5 %) and Xenophilus azovorans DSM 13620T (97.1 %). However, the phylogenetic tree indicated that strain 5516S-2T formed a separate clade from Xenophilus azovorans. Strain 5516S-2T displayed 42, 31 and 30 % DNA–DNA relatedness to the type strains of Xenophilus azovorans, Xylophilus ampelinus and V. soli, respectively. The major fatty acids (>10 % of total fatty acids) were C16 : 0 (33.3 %), C17 : 0 cyclo (18.8 %), C18 : 1 ω7c (17.5 %) and summed feature 3 (comprising C16 : 1 ω7c and/or iso-C15 : 0 2-OH; 13.0 %). The DNA G+C content was 69 mol%. The major quinone was ubiquinone Q-8. The predominant polar lipids were diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol and two unknown aminophospholipids. Genotypic and phenotypic characteristics clearly distinguished strain 5516S-2T from closely related species and indicated that it represents a novel species within the genus Xenophilus, for which the name Xenophilus aerolatus sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is 5516S-2T (=KACC 12602T=DSM 19424T).

A novel strictly anaerobic, non-spore-forming, non-motile, non-flagellated, rod-shaped, Gram-negative bacterium (YIT 12066T) was isolated from human faeces. The isolate was negative for catalase, oxidase, urease, hydrolysis of aesculin and gelatin, nitrate reduction and indole production. The major end products of glucose metabolism were succinate and acetate. The major cellular fatty acids (>10 %) were C14 : 0, C18 : 1 ω7c, C18 : 1 ω9c, C16 : 1 ω7c and C16 : 0. The G+C content of the DNA was 40.3 mol%. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis showed that strain YIT 12066T was most closely related to members of the family Succinivibrionaceae, with sequence similarity of 92–87 %. However, some phenotypic characteristics such as cellular morphology and the major fatty acid profile of strain YIT 12066T were markedly different from those of other members of the family Succinivibrionaceae. On the basis of both phylogenetic and phenotypic evidence, it is suggested that strain YIT 12066T represents a novel species in a new genus, for which the name Succinatimonas hippei gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed; the type strain of Succinatimonas hippei is YIT 12066T (=DSM 22608T =JCM 16073T).

A Gram-negative-staining, non-motile, non-spore-forming, aerobic and rod-shaped bacterial strain, DPG-138T, was isolated from seawater on the southern coast in Korea. Strain DPG-138T grew optimally at 30 °C and in the presence of 2–3 % (w/v) NaCl. A neighbour-joining phylogenetic tree based on 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that strain DPG-138T fell within the cluster comprising the type strains of four species of the genus Marivita (sequence similarity values of 97.8–98.2 %). The DNA G+C content was 59.9 mol%. The predominant ubiquinone of strain DPG-138T was Q-10, typical for the genus Marivita . The cellular fatty acid profiles of strain DPG-138T and type strains of four species of the genus Marivita were similar with C18 : 1ω7c as the most common fatty acid. The major polar lipids in strain DPG-138T were phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine and one unidentified aminolipid. Differential phenotypic properties and genetic distinctiveness of strain DPG-138T demonstrated that this strain is distinguishable from all four recognized species of the genus Marivita . On the basis of the data presented, strain DPG-138T is considered to represent a novel species of the genus Marivita , for which the name Marivita geojedonensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is DPG-138T ( = KCTC 23882T = CCUG 62112T).

A Gram-negative, rod-shaped, Flavobacterium-like bacterial strain, DS-20T, was isolated from soil from the island of Dokdo, Korea, and subjected to a polyphasic taxonomic study. Strain DS-20T grew optimally at pH 6.5–7.0 and 25 °C. It contained MK-6 as the predominant menaquinone and iso-C15 : 0, iso-C17 : 0 3-OH and iso-C17 : 1 ω9c as the major fatty acids. The DNA G+C content was 38.2 mol%. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain DS-20T belonged to the genus Flavobacterium. Levels of 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity between strain DS-20T and the type strains of recognized Flavobacterium species were below 94.9 %. Strain DS-20T differed from phylogenetically related Flavobacterium species in several phenotypic characteristics. On the basis of its phenotypic and phylogenetic distinctiveness, strain DS-20T was classified in the genus Flavobacterium as representing a novel species, for which the name Flavobacterium terrigena sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is DS-20T (=KCTC 12761T=DSM 17934T).
