A new type of optical element that can focus a cylindrical wave to a point focus (or vice versa) is analytically described. Such waves are, for example, produced in a beamline where light is collimated in one direction and then doubly focused by a single optic. A classical example in X-ray optics is the collimated two-crystal monochromator, with toroidal mirror refocusing. The element here replaces the toroid, and in such a system provides completely aberration free, point-to-point imaging of rays from the on-axis source point. We present an analytic solution for the mirror shape in its laboratory coordinate system with zero slope at the centre, and approximate solutions, based on bending an oblique circular cone and a bent right circular cylinder, that may facilitate fabrication and metrology.

The development of intense sources of x rays has led to renewed interest in the use of microbeams of x rays in x-ray fluorescence analysis. Sparks pointed out that the use of x rays as a probe offered the advantages of high sensitivity, low detection limits, low beam damage, and large penetration depths with minimal specimen preparation or perturbation. In addition, the option of air operation provided special advantages for examination of hydrated systems or for nondestructive microanalysis of large specimens.The disadvantages of synchrotron sources prompted the development of laboratory-based instrumentation with various schemes to maximize the beam flux while maintaining small point-to-point resolution. Nichols and Ryon developed a microprobe using a rotating anode source and a modified microdiffractometer. Cross and Wherry showed that by close-coupling the x-ray source, specimen, and detector, good intensities could be obtained for beam sizes between 30 and 100μm. More importantly, both groups combined specimen scanning with modern imaging techniques for rapid element mapping.

Abstract In this work, a new type of zinc(II) coordination polymer {[Zn(HIDC)(BBM)0.5]·H2O} n (Zn-CP) was synthesized using 4,5-imidazoledicarboxylic acid (H3IDC) and 2,2-(1,4-butanediyl)bis-1,3-benzimidazole (BBM) under hydrothermal conditions. Its structure has been characterized by infrared spectroscopy, elemental analysis and single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. The Zn(II) ion is linked by the HIDC2− ligand to form a zigzag chain by chelating and bridging, and then linked by BBM to form a layered network structure. Adjacent layers are further connected by hydrogen bond interaction to form a 3-D supramolecular framework. The solid-state fluorescence performance of Zn-CP shows that compared with free H3IDC ligand, its fluorescence intensity is significantly enhanced.

In order to prepare a new type of anode material, stainless steel was selected as substrate material. The β-PbO2 coating on stainless steel substrate was prepared under the appropriate plating solution, and the PbO2-MnO2 coating was prepared with thermal decomposition. The crystal structure was determined by X-ray diffraction; Surface morphology was test by Scanning Electron Microscopy; the energy spectrum was used to determine element mass-fraction and the ratio of atomic number of the coatings.

The objective of this study was to develop a novel silica modified large-sized hydroxyapatite whiskers with improved properties for use in bone repair applications. Large-sized whiskers with a mean length of 250μm were obtained by a hydrothermal co-precipitation method at 150°C, 7.5Mpa in high-pressure reactor. Silica modified hydroxyapatite whiskers were prepared by dissolving TEOS in ethanol solution, then sintering with hydroxyapatite. The compositional and morphological properties of prepared whiskers were studied by means of x-ray diffraction (XRD), Fouier transform infrared (FT-IR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results indicated the evidence of nanosilicon dioxide particles on the surface of HAP whiskers. The size of nanosilicon dioxide particles depends on dropping and stirring rate. Hence, this new type of silica modified large-sized hydroxyapatite whiskers is a valuable candidate for biomedical applications.Key words: hydroxyapatite, hydrothermal co-precipitation, surface modified, whiskers

The preparation of the N-(2-hydroxypropyl)-N-alkylhydroxylamines, 6a (R = CH3) and 6b (R = CH2Ph), and their reactions with phenylboronic acid are described. Regardless of the molar ratios of reactants employed, the reaction with 6b leads to the 1:2 condensate 1-benzyl-7-methyl-3,5-diphenyl-2,4,6-trioxa-1-azonia-3-bora-5-boratabicyclo[3.3.0]octane, 7, while that with 6a gives rise to the 1:1 condensate 1,4,6,9-tetramethyl-2,7-diphenyl-3,8,11,12-tetraoxa-1,6-diazonia-2,7-diboratatricyclo[5.3.1. 12,6]dodecane, 11 (the cyclic BONBON dimer of 4,6-dimethyl-2-phenyl-1,3-dioxa-4-aza-2-boracyclohexane, 9). Compounds 7 and 11 both crystallize in the triclinic space group [Formula: see text]: for 7; a = 13.126(1), b = 15.337(1), c = 10.9469(5) Å, α = 91.727(5), β = 104.647(5), γ = 72.922(7)°, Z = 4; and for 11; a = 9.0807(4), b = 9.1653(3), c = 6.4876(2) Å, α = 97.708(3), β = 108.830(3), γ = 89.188(4)°, Z = 1. The structures were solved by direct methods and were refined by full-matrix least-squares procedures to R = 0.038 and 0.032 for 5879 and 1827 reflections with I ≥ 3σ(F2), respectively. Compound 7 has the expected bicyclic pyroboronate structure, but represents the first reported N-substituted example of this type of compound. Bond lengths involving boron in 7 are (C) O—B(sp3) = 1.428(2) and 1.420(2), (B)O—B(sp3) = 1.472(2) and 1.468(2), N—B(sp3) = 1.737(2) and 1.762(2), C(phenyl)—B(sp3) = 1.588(2) and 1.584(2), (N)O—B(sp2) = 1.402(2) and 1.404(2), (B)O—B(sp2) = 1.331(2) and 1.329(2), C(phenyl)—B(sp2) = 1.555(3) and 1.553(2) Å. The X-ray analysis establishes a centrosymmetric, twofold N → B coordinated, dimeric structure in the solid state for 11 in which each B—O—N segment of a central six-membered BONBON ring is bridged by an O—C—C moiety. Compound 11 represents the first fully characterized example of a new type of "BONBON" compound. Bond distances involving the boron atom are (N)O—B = 1.465(1), (C)O—B = 1.428(1), N—B = 1.695(2), and C(phenyl)—B = 1.607(2) Å. Spectroscopic evidence indicates that in solution and in the gas phase this material exists predominantly as the monomer 9.

The isolation of the novel pentacyclic base megastachine (1), representative of a new type of Lycopodium alkaloid, is reported. Its structure has been determined by X-ray diffraction analysis.
