Individual convulsion threshold pressures were determined in mice exposed successively to type I and type II convulsions of the high-pressure neurological syndrome (HPNS), as well as in others exposed, in successive compressions, to type I convulsions under diverse conditions of replication of compression rate. Correlation analyses of the results showed the following degrees of correlation of individual convulsion-threshold pressures: type I with type II-negligible (r2 less than equal to 0.2); type I with type I at the same compression rate-closely correlated (r2 greater than or equal to 0.8); type I with type I at a different compression rate-negligible (r2 less than or equal to 0.2). Individual susceptibility to HPNS (type I) convulsions thus is a stable characteristic of individual seizures vary independently of one another. Likewise, the magnitude of the individual compression rate effect varies independently of intrinsic individual susceptibility to type I HPNS seizures. The results support the view that the HPNS is a composite entity, define constraints on personnel selection, and provide a basis for estimating the efficacy of various selection strategies.

Abstract Background Allopurinol as a drug is commonly used to treat gout and its complications. The aim usually is to lower the level of serum uric acid. Also, it was found to be prescribed in cases of asymptomatic hyperuricemia. However, this medication has serious side effects and some of these are fatal. So the aim of the current research work is to look at its use, whether properly indicated or not, in a university hospital. Results A total of 427 patients were included in this study. Only 3.7% (16) of the patients had the drug for significant hyperuricemia. Gout was confirmed in 40 (9.4%) patients. Conclusion It is clear that most patients received allopurinol without proper indications. The inappropriate use of allopurinol should be looked at to reduce the cost of medication and more importantly to avoid possible adverse effects.

To fight the virus SARS-CoV-2 spread to Europe from China and to give support to the collapsed public health system, the Spanish Health Authorities developed a field hospital located in the facilities of Madrid exhibition centre (IFEMA) to admit and treat patients diagnosed with SARS-CoV-2 infectious disease (COVID-19). The Department of Laboratory Medicine of La Paz University Hospital in Madrid (LMD-HULP) was designated to provide laboratory services. Due to the emergency, the IFEMA field hospital had to be prepared for patient admission in less than 1 week and the laboratory professionals had to collaborate in a multidisciplinary group to assure that resources were available to start on time. The LMD-HULP participated together with the managers in the design of the tests portfolio and the integration of the healthcare information systems (IS) (hospital IS, laboratory IS and POCT management system). Laboratorians developed a strategy to quickly train clinicians and nurses on test requests, sample collection procedures and management/handling of the POCT blood gas analyser both by written materials and training videos. The IFEMA´s preanalytical unit managed 3782 requests, and more than 11,000 samples from March 27th to April 30th. Furthermore, 1151 samples were measured by blood gas analysers. In conclusion, laboratory professionals must be resilient and have to respond timely in emergencies as this pandemic. The lab’s personnel selection, design and monitoring indicators to maintain and further improve the quality and value of laboratory services is crucial to support medical decision making and provide better patient care.

Objective: This study explored whether working memory and sustained attention influence cognitive lock-up, which is a delay in the response to consecutive automation failures. Background: Previous research has demonstrated that the information that automation provides about failures and the time pressure that is associated with a task influence cognitive lock-up. Previous research has also demonstrated considerable variability in cognitive lock-up between participants. This is why individual differences might influence cognitive lock-up. The present study tested whether working memory—including flexibility in executive functioning—and sustained attention might be crucial in this regard. Method: Eighty-five participants were asked to monitor automated aircraft functions. The experimental manipulation consisted of whether or not an initial automation failure was followed by a consecutive failure. Reaction times to the failures were recorded. Participants’ working-memory and sustained-attention abilities were assessed with standardized tests. Results: As expected, participants’ reactions to consecutive failures were slower than their reactions to initial failures. In addition, working-memory and sustained-attention abilities enhanced the speed with which participants reacted to failures, more so with regard to consecutive than to initial failures. Conclusion: The findings highlight that operators with better working memory and sustained attention have small advantages when initial failures occur, but their advantages increase across consecutive failures. Application: The results stress the need to consider personnel selection strategies to mitigate cognitive lock-up in general and training procedures to enhance the performance of low ability operators.

Recently, the functional aspect as well as morphological aspect of the reserve cells in the cervix uteri drew much attention in view of the carcinogenesis in squamocolumunar junction. In this communication, the authors elucidate the ultrastructural features of the reserve cells in patients of various age groups visiting our university hospital and affiliated hospital.From conventional light microscopic point of view, the reserve cells tend to be pronounced in various pathological conditions, such as the persisting inflammation, proliferative disorders and irritation of hormones. The morphological patterns of the reserve cells from various stage and degree of irritation were observed.
