An integrated ANP–QFD approach for prioritization of customer and design requirements for digitalization in an electronic supply chain

PurposeSupply chain efficiency can be enhanced by integrating the activities in supply chain through digitalization. Advancements in digital technologies has facilitated in designing robust and dynamic supply chain by bringing in efficiency, transparency and reduction in lead times. This research tries to identify and prioritize the customer requirements and design requirements for effective integration of supply chain through digitalization.Design/methodology/approachThe key nine customer requirements and 16 design requirements applicable for an electronics company were shortlisted in consultation with the experts from the company and academia. An integrated analytic network process (ANP) and quality function deployment (QFD) methodology has been applied for prioritizing the customer and design requirements. The relative importance and interdependence of these requirements were identified and a House of Quality (HOQ) is constructed.FindingsThe HOQ constructed has prioritized and identified interrelationships among customer requirements and design requirements for effective supply chain digitalization. These findings could be effectively used by managers for planning the objectives on long-term, medium-term and short-term basis.Originality/valueThis study tries to bridge the gap of identifying and prioritizing the design and customer requirements for effective supply chain integration through digitalization. The results could aid practicing managers and academicians in decision-making on supply chain digitalization process.

PurposeThe present paper aims to propose a framework on weather index insurance (WII) service design by using quality function deployment (QFD).Design/methodology/approachThis study utilizes QFD technique to propose a customer oriented framework on WII service design. In initial phase, customer and design requirements were gathered to derive the relationship between customers' and managers' voice for construct the house of quality (HOQ). Later on, prioritized customer and design requirements as QFD outcome were utilized to develop the action plan matrix in order to suggest the future action plans.FindingsThis study proposed a customer centric framework on WII service design to address the customer requirements. Findings show that adequate claim payments, hassle free prompt claim payment and transparency in losses computation are prioritized customer requirements with highest importance rating, whereas, accurate claim estimation, claim management system and advancement of technology are prioritized service design necessities with highest importance rating.Research limitations/implicationsThe proposed WII service design can enhance the quality of WII service by attain the higher standards of WII service in order to completely satisfy the customers.Practical implicationsThe proposed WII service design can provide a solution to the problems faced by WII industry by improve the customer's service experience and satisfaction.Originality/valueBased on best of author's knowledge, this paper first proposed a framework on WII service design by integrating customer and design requirements by using QFD.

Purpose Delivering vaccines to the children who need them requires a supply chain that is efficient and effective. In most of the developing countries, however, the unknown and unresolved supply chain issues are causing inefficiencies in distributing vaccines. There is, therefore, a great need in such countries to recognize the issues that cause delays in vaccine delivery. With this purpose, the present study aims to identify and analyze the key issues in the supply chain of basic vaccines required to immunize children in developing countries. Design/methodology/approach Based on a field survey of three states of India, in-depth review of relevant literature and experts’ opinions, 25 key issues were recognized as factors of the vaccine supply chain (VSC) and categorized into five main domains. Using integrated interpretive structural modeling and fuzzy analytic network process approaches, the issues have been prioritized to determine their relative importance in the VSC. In addition, a sensitivity analysis has been performed to investigate the priority stability of the issues. Findings The results of the analysis show that among the five domains of VSC issues, the economic domain with a weight of 0.4262 is the most important domain, followed by the management (0.2672), operational (0.2222), environmental (0.0532) and social (0.0312). Research limitations/implications This study focuses on the prioritization of VSC issues; therefore, the results of the present study can provide direction to the decision-makers of immunization programs of developing countries in driving their efforts and resources on eliminating the most important obstacles to design successful vaccination programs. Originality/value To the authors’ knowledge, this paper is first to provide a direction to the decision-makers in identifying and managing important issues through the use of an analytical approach.

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to introduce a solution to the problem of changing priorities of customer needs (CNs) in quality function deployment (QFD). Customer preferences and priorities are not very stable and they may change before products are ready for the market. Therefore, finding CNs accurately is a key to reach a higher level of customer satisfaction through improving products. Design/methodology/approachIn the proposed model, a Markov chain is employed to model the changing priorities of CNs. The Markov chain finds a pattern of future CNs, the main inputs of QFD. The QFD method is applied to translate CNs into product requirements (PRs). The analytic network process (ANP) is attached to QFD to ensure that all the relations among the elements, inner and outer, are taken into consideration during the translation process. Thus, CNs are received and adjusted by a Markov chain. FindingsThe application of Markov chains for an ANP-QFD model develops an adequate method of finding a pattern of changing priorities of CNs. This pattern enables the ANP-QFD method to work independent of the initial CNs, and originates a Markovain ANP-QFD. Originality/valueThis study originates a stochastic ANP-QFD model. There have been several papers employing various tools and techniques such as the ANP or analytic hierarchy process for QFD to find accurate relations between PRs and CNs. While there are a few papers applying Markov chains to predict the future of the relations of QFD, there is no study which traces the changes in priorities of the CNs during the improvement process. This is addressed by applying a Markovian ANP-QFD. The model is validated through a case study.

Purpose Previous researchers have studied push and pull contracts in the single product scenario, although in practice, supply chains often produce and sell multiple products. In a multiproduct scenario, the sales of a product will be influenced by its complements or substitutes, which requires consideration when the supply chain members negotiate contracts. This paper aims to fill this gap by studying push and pull contracts in a supply chain which distributes two products to a market and discusses how the degree of complementarity/substitutability between the two products affects the supplier’s decisions and supply chain efficiency. Design/methodology/approach The paper uses the model of a single-supplier, single-retailer supply chain which sells a product with a long lead time and another product with a short lead time simultaneously in a market. This research compares the production quantity and supply chain efficiency under a push contract with those under a pull contract. Findings First, when the two products are complements, the equilibrium production quantity of Product 2 is higher under a pull contract than that under a push contract. Second, a pull contract is found to be optimal for both the supplier’s profit and supply chain efficiency when the two products are complements, while if they are substitutes, then a push contract is the better choice in some situations. Originality/value The existing literature discusses push and pull contracts in the single product scenario. The current paper pays attention to the two-product scenario and investigates how the complementarity/substitutability degree between the two products affects the supplier’s decisions and supply chain efficiency.

Purpose – No matter in product design stage or product quality improvement stage, the product technical requirements (PTRs) impacting on product performance are mainly identified and improved to optimize customer needs (CNs) as greatly as possible. The purpose of this paper is to use a new approach to accurately and properly prioritize PTRs in Quality Function Deployment (QFD). Design/methodology/approach – Considering the relationship between CNs and PTRs in QFD hard to quantitatively measure and lack of adequate information, the grey relational analysis (GRA) is applied. Besides, owing to the inherent inner dependencies of CNs as well as QFD, the analytic network process (ANP) which is an effective tool to take into account the inner dependencies with network is utilized. Finally, an integrated framework based on GRA method and ANP approach is proposed to determine the importance degrees of PTRs in designing a product. Findings – The calculation results of the application show that the proposed framework by integrating GRA and ANP is able to determine the importance degrees of PTRs in design a product well. Practical implications – In the application part the authors can see the proposed framework can be applied to PVC window systems. Owing to that traditional QFD method has been widely used in many fields such as manufacturing industry and service industry, actually the proposed framework has great potential application in the real word. Originality/value – This paper succeeds in proposing a new framework by integrating GRA and ANP to determine the importance degrees of PTRs in QFD.

Purpose The purpose of this study was to identify the excellence criteria of services supply chain (SSC) in Iran and the relationship between them and the importance of each criterion. Design/methodology/approach In this paper, after reviewing the principles and evaluating models of SSCs, using the fuzzy Delphi method, the criteria for excellence in the supply chain processes were identified. Then, the relationships between these criteria and their significance were evaluated using decision-making trial and evaluation laboratory (DEMATEL) and DEMATEL-based analytic network process methods. Findings The results show that 19 evaluation criteria have been identified in Iran in accordance with the SSC process. These criteria were classified according to their nature and based on the Deming Excellence Model and ISO 9004 standards in four areas: Plan, Do, Check and Act. In addition, the Act dimension with the weight of 0.275 has the highest importance and the Plan dimension with the weight of 0.219 has the lowest importance. Practical implications This study attempted to identify appropriate criteria for SSC processes in management consulting firms by examining supply chain assessment models to provide the managers with the right understanding of this industry for performance assessment so that they have a better knowledge of supply chain processes. Originality/value The results will be useful for managers to understand the SSC and the ways of SSC excellence in a service organization. This research is a first step for evaluating SSC performance of management consultancy institutes. In fact, after the identification of SSC processes and evaluation criteria, designing a mechanism for the evaluation of the performance of SSCs can be a subject for future research.

Purpose This paper aims to select and rank the solutions of knowledge management and apply them to the supply chain for boosting its performance. Therefore, organizations can focus on the high-priority solutions and assign the resources to the strategies related to these solutions. Design/methodology/approach A decision making trial and evaluation laboratory-based analytic network process method is first used to rank the barriers of implementing the knowledge solutions and preference ranking organization method for enrichment evaluations technique is then used to rank the knowledge-based solutions which improve the overall performance of the supply chain. Then, a mathematical model is proposed to select the best solutions where the effectiveness and fairness are maximized while the cost and risk are minimized. The proposed model is implemented over a dairy supply chain in Iran. The solutions are obtained using the literature and the experts’ panel of the supply chain. Findings Lack of trust and commitment of supply chain members, besides different interests, values and cultures of the supply chain members, is the most challenging barrier to knowledge management solution. Strengthening the cooperation culture in the chain, setting up a transparent workflow or open-door policy, setting up enough incentives and reward and punishment and setting up positive leadership toward knowledge management are the most important strategies for removing the existing barriers or decreasing their impact on the supply chain. Originality/value Solutions with the highest priority are not necessarily the best solutions for implementation; the requirements of organizations must also be considered. Mathematical model in this study helped to select solutions based on their cost and risk, as well as their priority level.

This paper presents a strategic roadmap to handle the issue of resource allocation among the green supply chain management (GSCM) practices. This complex issue for supply chain stakeholders highlights the need for the application of supply chain finance (SCF). This paper proposes the five Vs of big data (value, volume, velocity, variety, and veracity) as a platform for determining the role of GSCM practices in improving SCF implementation. The fuzzy analytic network process (ANP) was employed to prioritize the five Vs by their roles in SCF. The fuzzy technique for order preference by similarity to ideal solution (TOPSIS) was then applied to evaluate GSCM practices on the basis of the five Vs. In addition, interpretive structural modeling (ISM) was used to visualize the optimum implementation of the GSCM practices. The outcome is a hybrid self-assessment model that measures the environmental maturity of SCF by the coherent application of three multicriteria decision-making techniques. The development of the Basic Readiness Index (BRI), Relative Readiness Index (RRI), and Strategic Matrix Tool (SMT) creates the potential for further improvements through the integration of the RRI scores and ISM results. This hybrid model presents a practical tool for decision-makers.
