Purpose Numerical study of nanofluid forced convection within a branching channel was performed under the influence of a uniform magnetic field. The purpose of this study is to enhance the heat transfer performance of the separated flow at the branching channel with the use of magnetic field and nanofluid. The use of magnetic field and enhancement in both the thermal conductivity and electrical conductivity with the inclusion of the nanoparticles provides favorable thermophysical properties of the nanofluid when it used as a heat transfer fluid in a branching channel. The results of this study may be used to control the thermal performance in a branching channel and further optimization studies in the presence of magnetic field. Design/methodology/approach Galerkin weighted residual finite element method was used for the simulations. The numerical simulation results are performed by changing the inclination angle of the lower branching channel (between 0° and 90°), thermophysical properties of the fluid via inclusion of nanoparticles (between 0 and 0.04), Reynolds number (between 100 and 400) and magnetic field strength (Hartmann number changes between 0 and 15). Findings It was observed that the recirculation zones and reattachment length of the upper and lower branching channels are affected by the variation of those parameters. Reattachment lengths increase with the augmentation of the Reynolds number and deterioration of the Hartmann number. Average Nusselt number becomes higher for higher values of Hartmann number and solid particle volume fraction. Inclusion of the nanoparticle to the base fluid is very effective for the configuration with higher values of Hartmann number. An optimum value of the inclination angle of the lower branching channel is observed, beyond which heat transfer rate is significantly reduced due to the establishment of a large vortex in the upper branching channel and restriction of the fluid motion. Originality/value In this study, forced convection of nanofluid flow in a branching channel under the effect of magnetic field was numerically studied. Magnetic field effects with nanoparticle inclusion to the base fluid on the convective heat transfer was analyzed for various inclination angles of the lower branching channel. Flow separation at the junction of the channels and thus convective heat transfer rate are influenced by the variation of these parameters. There are many studies related to application of the magnetic field with nanofluids, and a few of them are related to configurations with separated flows. To the best of the authors’ knowledge, there exist no studies for the application of nanofluids and magnetic field for the convective heat transfer in a branching channel. This topic is of importance as there are many engineering applications of the branching channels.

Blood flow through permeable microcirculation in the presence of a composite stenosis, an external magnetic field and convective heat transfer was examined. A two-layered model for the blood consisting of a fluid-particle suspension in the core region with a peripheral cell-free plasma layer was used. The proposed system of equations was solved and plots were generated. In the presence of permeable walls, an external magnetic field and convective heat transfer, the temperature of the blood, friction-factor Reynolds number and Nusselt number were investigated. The temperature of the blood increased when the Hartmann number increased, Darcy number increased, haematocrit level increased or the peripheral layer thinned. The friction-factor Reynolds number product increased as the haematocrit, Hartmann number, stenosis height or Darcy number increased. The Nusselt number decreased as the Hartmann number, haematocrit, stenosis height or Darcy number increased. These results were interpreted in terms of the physical situation. This study aids in understanding the effects of wall permeability, a magnetic field and the presence of heat transfer on different diseased arterial systems in the future.

Purpose The purpose of this study is to perform computational analysis on the steady flow and heat transfer due to a slot nanojet impingement onto a heated moving body. The object is moving at constant speed and nanoparticle is included in the heat transfer fluid. The unsteady flow effects and interactions of multiple impinging jets are also considered. Design/methodology/approach The finite volume method was used as the solver in the numerical simulation. The movement of the hot body in the channel is also considered. Influence of various pertinent parameters such as Reynolds number, jet to target surface spacing and solid nanoparticle volume fraction on the convective heat transfer characteristics are numerically studied in the transient regime. Findings It is found that the flow field and heat transfer becomes very complicated due to the interaction of multiple impinging jets with the movement of the hot body in the channel. Higher heat transfer rates are achieved with higher values of Reynolds number while the inclusion of nanoparticles resulted in a small impact on flow friction. The middle jet was found to play an important role in the heat transfer behavior while jet and moving body temperatures become equal after t = 80. Originality/value Even though some studies exist for the application of jet impingement heat transfer for a moving plate, the configuration with a solid moving hot body on a moving belt under the impacts of unsteady flow effects and interactions of multiple impinging jets have never been considered. The results of the present study will be helpful in the design and optimization of various systems related to convective drying of products, metal processing industry, thermal management in electronic cooling and many other systems.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to investigate the convective heat transfer of magnetic nanofluid (MNF) inside a square enclosure under uniform magnetic fields considering nonlinearity of magnetic field-dependent thermal conductivity. Design/methodology/approach The properties of the MNF (Fe3O4+kerosene) were described by polynomial functions of magnetic field-dependent thermal conductivity. The effect of the transverse magnetic field (0 < H < 105), Hartmann Number (0 < Ha < 60), Rayleigh number (10 <Ra <105) and the solid volume fraction (0 < φ < 4.7%) on the heat transfer performance inside the enclosed space was examined. Continuity, momentum and energy equations were solved using the finite element method. Findings The results show that the Nusselt number increases when the Rayleigh number increases. In contrast, the convective heat transfer rate decreases when the Hartmann number increases due to the strong magnetic field which suppresses the buoyancy force. Also, a significant improvement in the heat transfer rate is observed when the magnetic field is applied and φ = 4.7% (I = 11.90%, I = 16.73%, I = 10.07% and I = 12.70%). Research limitations/implications The present numerical study was carried out for a steady, laminar and two-dimensional flow inside the square enclosure. Also, properties of the MNF are assumed to be constant (except thermal conductivity) under magnetic field. Practical implications The results can be used in thermal storage and cooling of electronic devices such as lithium-ion batteries during charging and discharging processes. Originality/value The accuracy of results and heat transfer enhancement having magnetic field-field-dependent thermal conductivity are noticeable. The results can be used for different applications to improve the heat transfer rate and enhance the efficiency of a system.

This paper focuses on the convective heat transfer characteristics of Fe3O4 /Water magnetic nanofluids under laminar and turbulent conditions. After verifying the accuracy of the experimental apparatus, the effects of magnetic field strength, concentration, Reynolds number and temperature on the convective heat transfer coefficient have been studied. The convective heat transfer characteristics of nanofluids under laminar and turbulent flow conditions were studied in depth, and the influence of each factor on the heat transfer coefficient was analyzed by orthogonal experimental design method. Under the laminar flow conditions, the convective heat transfer of magnetic nanofluids performed best when the Reynolds number was 2000, the magnetic field strength was 600, the temperature was 30? and the concentration was 2%. And the convective heat transfer coefficient (h) increased by 3.96% than the distilled water in the same conditions. In turbulent state, the convective heat transfer of magnetic nanofluids performed the best when the Re was 6000, the magnetic field strength was 600, the temperature was 40? and the concentration was 2%. The h increased by 11.31% than the distilled water in the same Reynolds number and the magnetic field strength conditions.

In this study, investigation of convective heat transfer enhancement with the use of CuO–Polyaniline (CuO–PANI) nanocomposite basednanofluid inside vertical helically coiled tube heat exchanger was carried out experimentally. In these experiments, the effects of different parameters such as Reynolds number and volume % of CuO–PANI nanocomposite in nanofluid on the heat transfer coefficient of base fluid have been studied. In order to study the effect of CuO–PANI nanocomposite based nanofluid on heat transfer, CuO nanoparticles loaded in PANI were synthesized in the presence of ultrasound assisted environment at different loading concentration of CuO nanoparticles (1, 3 and 5 wt.%). Then the nanofluids were prepared at different concentrations of CuO–PANI nanocomposite using water as a base fluid. The 1 wt.% CuO–PANI nanocomposite was selected for the heat transfer study for nanofluid concentration in the range of 0.05 to 0.3 volume % and Reynolds number range of was 1080 to 2160 (±5). Around 37 % enhancement in the heat transfer coefficient was observed for 0.2 volume % of 1 wt.% CuO–PANI nanocomposite in the base fluid. In addition, significant enhancement in the heat transfer coefficient was observed with an increase in the Reynolds number and percentage loading of CuO nanoparticle in Polyaniline (PANI).

The present study focus on both free and forced convective heat transfer through a nanofluid in two dimensions past stretching vertical plate. This free and forced convective heat transfer in Cu–water Nanofluid past permeable flat vertical semi-infinite plate was due to high conductivity and its occurrence. In this paper magnetic field and also heat source were considered. In graphs the effect on various parameters such as Reynolds number (Re) , solid volume fraction (φ), magnetic field parameter (M), inclination angle of the plate (γ ), heat source parameter (Qh), on linear velocity (U), vertical velocity (V) and temperature (θ) were exhibited. The profile of every governing parameter is displayed for natural as well as forced convection by considering the Ar >> 1 and Ar << 1 respectively. This rate of heat transfer in forced convection is more than equivalent in free convection. So these problems have several applications in engineering and petroleum industries such as electroplating, chemical processing of heavy metals and solar water heaters. Inertial force reducing the heat transfer rate in natural convection but the enhancement of Nu observed in forced convection. The composition of metal particles enhances the heat transfer rate in both convections, which emphasizes the nanofluid significance. Lorentz force is enhancing the heat transfer rate slightly. Heat source obviously increase the rate of heat transfer in both convections. The present paper aims to study the convective high temperature transfer of nanofluids into which viscosity proposed by Einstein and thermal conductivity proposed by Corcione were used.

A Steady state-laminar forced convective heat transfer has been simulated by Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) with a Single Phase Model (SPM), Multi Phase model & Diameter effects and also determined the effects of nanoparticles concentration and nanofluid flow rate through 3D rectangular duct under certain boundary condition (constant heat flux). The nanofluid contains Alumina nanoparticles of size 60nm diameter used for MPM which is mixed with base fluid (water) with volume fraction of 0% ≤ ȼ ≤ 5% and Reynolds number (Re) ranges from 250 ≤ Re ≤ 1000. ANSYS 18.0 has been used for simulation. Three cases of analysis have been carried out in which the thermal conductivity (k) and dynamic viscosity (µ) of nanofluids are determined using two sets of theoretical models and one set of experimental k & µ data from literature respectively. The nanoparticles which stay more dispersed in the base fluid due to increase in Reynolds number which improves HTC and also decreases the friction factor accordingly. Particular attention has been paid to the variation of heat transfer characteristics when the modeling approach is switched from SPM to MPM. It is revealed that higher heat transfer rates are observed in MPM. The results shows that the friction factor decreases and Nusselt number (Nu) increases when there is an increase in the flow rate and also increase in the volume concentration of the nanofluid, while the pressure drop increases only slightly. The increase in HTC is one of the most important aims for industry and researchers.

Purpose This paper aims to study the flow and heat transfer inside a wavy enclosure filled with Cu-water nanofluid under magnetic field effect by parallel implemented meshfree approach. Design/methodology/approach The simulation has been carried out for a two-dimensional model with steady, laminar and incompressible flow of the nanofluid filled inside wavy enclosure in which one of the walls is sinusoidal such that the amplitude (A = 0.15) and number of undulations (n = 2) are fixed. A uniform magnetic field B0 has been applied at an inclination angle γ. The governing equations for the transport phenomena have been solved numerically by implementing element-free Galerkin method (EFGM) with the sequential as well as parallel approach. The effect of various parameters, namely, nanoparticle volume fraction (φ), Rayleigh number (Ra), Hartmann number (Ha) and magnetic field inclination angle (γ) has been studied on the natural convection flow of nanofluid. Findings The results are obtained in terms of average Nusselt number calculated at the cold wavy wall, streamlines and isotherms. It has been observed that the increasing value of Rayleigh number results in increased heat transfer rate while the Hartmann number retards the fluid motion. On the other hand, the magnetic field inclination angle gives rise to the heat transfer rate up to its critical value. Above this value, the heat transfer rate starts to decrease. Originality/value The implementation of the magnetic field and its inclination has provided very interesting results on heat and fluid flow which can be used in the drug delivery where nanofluids are used in many physiological problems. Another important novelty of the paper is that meshfree method (EFGM) has been used here because the domain is irregular. The results have been found to be very satisfactory. In addition, parallelization of the scheme (which has not been implemented earlier in such problems) improves the computational efficiency.

PurposeThe purpose of this study is to conduct a numerical analysis of flow and heat transfer of water–aluminum oxide nanofluid in a channel with extended surfaces in the presence of a constant magnetic field. The channel consists of two parallel plates and five obstacles of constant temperature on the lower wall of the channel. The upper wall and the inlet and outlet lengths of the lower wall are insulated. A uniform magnetic field of the magnitude B0 is located beneath the obstacles. The nanofluid enters the channel with a uniform velocity and temperature, and a fully developed flow leaves the channel.Design/methodology/approachThe control volume-based finite difference and the SIMPLE algorithm were used for numerical solution. In addition to examining the effect of the Reynolds number, the effects of Hartman number, the volume fraction of nanoparticles, the height of obstacles, the length of obstacles and the distance between the obstacles were investigated.FindingsAccording to the results, the heat transfer rate increases with an increasing Reynolds number. As the Hartmann number increases, the heat transfer rate increases. The heat transfer rate also increases with an increase in the volume fraction of nanoparticles. The mean Nusselt number is reduced by an increasing height of obstacles. An increase in the distance between the obstacles in the presence of a magnetic field does not have a significant impact on the heat transfer rate. However, the heat transfer rate increases in the absence of a magnetic field, as the distance between the obstacles increases.Originality/valueThis paper is original and unpublished and is not being considered for publication elsewhere.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to investigate the coupled effect of magnetic field and radiation on convective heat transfer of low electrically conductive dielectric oxide melt. Design/methodology/approach The 3D Navier–Stokes equations are formulated using the vector potential-vorticity formulation and solved using the finite volume method (FVM). The radiative heat transfer equation is discretized using the FTnFVM method. A code was written using FORTRAN language. Findings The obtained numerical results are focused on the effect of the different parameters on the heat transfer and the flow structure with a special interest on the 3D transvers flow. It is found that the flow is developing in inner spirals and the magnetic field intensifies this 3D character. The radiation acts mainly at the core of the enclosure and causes the apparition of the merging phenomenon near the front and back walls. Originality/value The effect of magnetic field on convective heat transfer of highly electrically conductive fluids has been intensively studied. Reciprocally, the case of a fluid with low electrical conductivity is not so much investigated, especially when it is coupled with the effect of radiation. These two effects are studied in this paper for the case of a low-conductive LiNbO3 oxide melt.
