Study on friction characteristics of sliding interface of feed system

Purpose The serious friction caused by the fluctuation of friction occurs when start-up and will reduce the positioning accuracy of the servo axes of high precision machine tools, the purpose of this paper is to study the friction fluctuation characteristics of friction coefficients between interfaces under different working conditions. Design/methodology/approach HT200 and 45# materials were experimentally studied by friction and wear testing machine UMT-3, the variation of friction coefficient under different working conditions (different start-up conditions, the variation of lubrication state area and different roughness) were measured. Findings The results show that the larger start-up acceleration shortens the pre-sliding time of the interface friction, makes the friction coefficient decrease faster, reduces the mixed lubrication area of the contact surface and makes the contact surface reach the stable lubrication state quickly. It can be concluded that the larger roughness surface will lead to the larger mixed lubrication area, the larger static friction coefficient and the larger drop between static and dynamic friction coefficient and easy to cause friction vibration. Originality/value The results reveal the friction fluctuation rule of the metal interface during the different start-up process, which is of guiding significance to reveal the lubrication principle and mechanism of the mechanical interface. Summary Sealing is a technical bottleneck that affects drilling efficiency and cost in deep, difficult-to-drill formations. The spiral combination seal with active sand removal performance is a new type of seal, and the wear mechanism is not clear, resulting in no effective design. In this study, the wear properties of materials were measured by a friction-and-wear testing machine, and the measurement methods and criteria of wear loss and friction coefficient were established. The fitting function of working condition and friction coefficient was studied by fitting regression method. The law of influence of working conditions on friction coefficient and wear amount was determined. The actual wear model and evaluation criteria of wear condition were established by using wear test data and geometric relationship. The relationship among working conditions, contact stress, and wear depth is determined by numerical simulation method, and the wear mechanism of the new seal is revealed, which provides a theoretical basis for its application.

Purpose This study aims to investigate and present the tribological behaviour of recursively friction stir processed 7075 aluminium alloy. Design/methodology/approach In this work, aluminium 7075 alloy is friction stir processed recursively by varying the tool rotational speed, traverse speed and the number of passes. Wear pins for testing were extracted from the processed zone and the surfaces were prepared. Wear tests were conducted as per the standard on a pin-on-disc wear testing machine at constant testing conditions and the corresponding tribological properties were analysed. The worn surface and the debris were analysed using a field-emission scanning electron microscope with energy dispersive spectroscopy analysis and elemental mapping to identify the mode of wear mechanism. Findings The experimental results indicate that the specimen fabricated at 1,150 rpm of tool rotation speed and 60 mm/min of traverse speed with 4 passes had the highest wear resistance and the minimum friction coefficient. Originality/value This paper details the effect of recursive friction stir processing on the surface of AA 7075 to improve the tribological properties. Purpose Random point-contact between the space bearing retainer and the rolling elements may cause wear of the space bearing retainer. The paper aims to clarify the friction and wear behaviors of polyimide bearing retainer under point-contact condition. Design/methodology/approach Space bearing retainers were cut into flat specimens and the tribological behaviors of the specimens were studied under point-contact condition using a friction and wear testing machine. Different sliding velocities and normal loads were used to simulate the running state of space bearing retainer. The wear behaviors of the space bearing retainer were analyzed by SEM and white light interferometer. Findings The friction coefficient of the polyimide composites decreased with increase in sliding velocity from 1  to 5 mm/s. Moreover, with increase in sliding velocity and normal load, the wear rate of the polyimide composites decreased and increased, respectively. Moreover, the wear behaviors of the polyimide composites were mainly determined by the combined actions of ploughing friction and adhesive friction. The lubricating properties of transfer film and wear debris were limited under point-contact condition. Practical implications The paper includes implications for the understanding of the wear mechanism of the polyimide composites space bearing retainer under point-contact condition and then to optimize space bearing retainer materials further. Originality/value Under point-contact condition, wear debris can hardly participate in the friction process because of limited contact area. Consequently, the wear debris has limited impact on the wear process to decrease the friction and wear. Purpose This paper aims to improve the tribological properties of aluminum alloys and reduce their wear rate. Design/methodology/approach Carbon is placed in the model at room temperature, pour 680°C of molten aluminum into the pressure chamber, and then pressed it into the mold containing carbon felt through a die casting machine, and waited for it to cool, which used an injection pressure of 52.8 MPa and held the same pressure for 15 s. Findings The result indicated that the mechanical properties of matrix and composite are similar, and the compressive strength of the composite is only 95% of the matrix alloy. However, the composite showed a low friction coefficient, the friction coefficient of Gr/Al composite is only 0.15, which just is two-third than that of the matrix alloy. Similarly, the wear rate of the composite is less than 4% of the matrix. In addition, the composite can avoid severe wear before 200°C, but the matrix alloy only 100°C. Originality/value This material has excellent friction properties and is able to maintain this excellent performance at high temperatures. Purpose This study aims to investigate the friction coefficient of Al2O3–NbC nanocomposite obtained by spark plasma sintering sliding against a steel ball. Design/methodology/approach Tribological tests were carried out using a reciprocating nanotribometer in a ball on flat configuration with normal loads in the range from 10 to 100 mN under dry conditions. Surface changes were analyzed by confocal microscopy and 3D profilometry. Findings The values of the friction coefficient varied from 0.15 to 0.6 and are independent of the applied load. Originality/value The tribological behavior is attributed to fracture in the contact region and the effect of wear debris. Diamond-like carbon film (DLC) with an interlayer of plasma sprayed tungsten-carbide (WC) was prepared on an aluminum alloy substrate (A5052) by a hybrid process of plasma-based ion implantation and deposition using hydrocarbon gas. Typical thicknesses of DLC and WC films were 1 μm and 100 μm, respectively. The hardness and friction coefficient of DLC were typically 15 GPa and 0.15, respectively. The durability of DLC/WC/A5052 system was evaluated from the measurement of the friction coefficient by a ball-on-disk friction tester in which the loaded ball was drawn repeatedly across a sample and the load was increased with each traverse. For the DLC/A5052 system, which has no WC interlayer, the DLC film was broken quickly because of distortion of the substrate. For the DLC/WC/A5052 system, on the other hand, the DLC film was excellent in durability for long running. The wear rate of rubber rotor to the metal rotor was measured by a roller-pitching-type wear testing machine, showing large reduction in wear rate using DLC-coated metal rotor.

Purpose This paper aims to clarify the friction properties of 304 steel surface modification. The surface modification includes laser texturing processing and nitriding treatment on 304 steel surface, and then the friction properties’ test was conducted on different friction directions and different upper test samples by using microfriction and wear testing machine. Design/methodology/approach The diameter and spacing of 100-, 150-, 200-, 300-μm pit array on the surface of 304 steel were calculated using a M-DPSS-50 semiconductor laser device. Then, the textured surface was nitriding-treated using a nitriding salt bath device. The chemical composition, surface morphology and surface microhardness of the composite-modified surface were measured by X-ray diffraction and by using an optical microscope and a microhardness tester. The tribological characteristics of the composite-modified surface were tested by MRTR microcomputer-controlled multifunctional friction and wear testing machine. Findings The result showed that a rule pit texture surface was obtained by the texture processing. The microhardness of nitriding treatment surface reached 574.27HV0.1, which significantly higher than 222.58HV0.1 of 304 steel. The composite-modified surface has excellent anti-friction and wear resistance properties when the upper specimen was GCr15 steel and ZrO2, respectively. The composite-modified surface has excellent anti-friction and anti-wear properties after long time friction under different angles. However, the friction coefficient and wear morphology of the friction pairs are not affected by the friction angle. Research limitations/implications Because of the chosen research approach, the research results may lack generalizability. Therefore, researchers are encouraged to test the proposed propositions further. Practical implications The paper conducted a systematic study of the tribological characteristics of 304 steel composite modification surface and provided a good basis for the extensive application of 304 steel. Social implications The study provides a good basis for the extensive application of 304 steel. Originality/value This paper fulfils an identified need to study the extensive application of 304 steel.

The influence of MoS2 lubrication phase on the tribological properties of the Ni60A/MoS2 composite coating was conducted on UMT-2 micro-wear testing machine (USA), discussing the self-lubricating effect and mechanism. The result shows that with the increasing content of MoS2, the friction coefficient of the coating which changed with the increasing content of the MoS2 presents firstly decreases then increases, and the value reach the minimum when the quality percent of MoS2 wrapped with Nickel is 35%. Low-friction property of the Ni60A/MoS2 composite coating is due to the forming of MoS2 lubricating film in friction surface. The decreasing of the friction coefficient of the coating is in proportion to the coverage area of MoS2 lubricating film.

The influence of the oil supply, nozzle type, air supply, the performance of sliding friction element under the lubrication preloads were investigated by measuring the element’s temperature and friction coefficient based on the M2000-A friction wear testing machine. When the load, rotating speed and air supply is at 1500N, 210rpm and 2.25 m3/h level respectively, as the oil supply is increased, the temperature rises and friction coefficient decreases. The temperature rise decreases monotonically. The friction coefficient rises monotonically with the air supply increases when the air supply is less than 2.4m3/h, but when the air supply is more than 2.4m3/h, the friction coefficient decreases monotonically. Furthermore, when the oil supply is reached 15ml/h, they remain almost unchanged regardless of direct nozzle and conical nozzle. Nevertheless, the direct nozzle is more suitable than the conical nozzle in oil-air lubrication of the sliding friction pairs .

Purpose This paper aims to focus on studying the addition of nano-tungsten disulfide (WS2) on fretting wear performance of ultra-high-molecular-weight-polyethylene (UHMWPE). Design/methodology/approach In this study, the effect of WS2 content on fretting wear performance of UHMWPE was investigated. The fretting wear performance of the UHMWPE and WS2/UHMWPE nanocomposites were evaluated on oscillating reciprocating friction and wear tester. The data of the friction coefficient and the specific wear rate were obtained. The worn surfaces of composites were observed. The transfer film and its component were analyzed. Findings With the addition of 0.5% WS2, the friction coefficient and specific wear rate increased. With the content increased to 1% and 1.5%, the friction coefficient and specific wear rate decreased. The lowest friction coefficient and specific wear rate were obtained with the addition of 1.5% nano-WS2. Continuingly increasing content, the friction coefficient and wear rate increased but lower than that of pure UHMWPE. Research limitations/implications The research indicated the fretting wear performance related to the content of nano-WS2 with the incorporation of WS2 into UHMWPE. Practical implications The result may help to choose the appropriate content. Originality/value The main originality of the research is to reveal the fretting behavior of UHMWPE and WS2/UHMWPE nanocomposites. It makes us realize the nano-WS2 had an effect on the fretting wear performance of UHMWPE.
