The business value of cloud computing: the partnering agility perspective

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to focus on the value creation potential of cloud computing in inter-firm partnerships. It examines how cloud-based IT infrastructure capabilities in flexibility and integration contribute to partnering agility and, consequently, firm performance. This study also introduces business lifecycle and market turbulence as internal and external context variables, respectively, to investigate the different roles of cloud computing in value creation. Design/methodology/approach – A questionnaire was used to collect data from 184 client firms of the largest cloud computing services provider in China (Alibaba Cloud). The theoretical model was tested using PLS analysis. Findings – Cloud infrastructure (CI) flexibility has a positive effect on partnering agility, while the effect of CI integration on partnering agility is moderated by business lifecycle and market turbulence. Research limitations/implications – The surveyed firms are all Alibaba Cloud clients, which may limit the generalization of the findings. Practical implications – The study suggests that besides the cost benefits, the value creation aspect of cloud computing should also be emphasized in research and practice. The study provides a new perspective to understand the business value of cloud computing in inter-firm partnerships. Originality/value – The study suggests that the flexibility-related and integration-related features of cloud computing can create value for firms by facilitating inter-firm collaboration in exploiting business opportunities.

PurposeAlthough Social Media use has become all-pervasive, previous research has failed to explain how to use Social Media tools strategically to create business value in today's increasingly digital landscapes. Adopting a dynamic capabilities perspective, this paper empirically examines the specific process through which Social Media use translates into better performance and the capabilities involved in this process.Design/methodology/approachA research model is proposed that includes both antecedents and consequences of Social Media use. Existing research was examined to derive the research hypotheses, which were tested using SEM methodology on a sample of 212 hotels.FindingsThe results show that Social Media use does not exert significant direct impact on organizational performance. Rather, the findings confirm the mediating role played by Social CRM and Customer Engagement capabilities in the value creation process.Practical implicationsThe results demonstrate how Social Media tools should be implemented and managed to generate business value in hotels. Implications yield interesting insights for hotel managersOriginality/valueThis study is a first attempt to analyze empirically the real impact of digital media technologies, particularly Social Media use, drawing on the dynamic capabilities perspective and focusing on service firms (hotels). Including the variable “Organizational Readiness” as a basic prerequisite to benefit from Social Media use enhances the study's novelty and contribution.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to explain the role of trust in cloud computing services based on empirical evidence from interviewing executives of financial institutions in Ghana. The paper answers the questions: what is the role of trust in cloud computing service acquisition, and what policies promote trusted cloud computing services? Design/methodology/approach – This is an explanatory paper that is based on literature review and empirical data on exploring reasons for cloud computing service acquisitions. A combination of interviews and focus group discussions was used as methods for data collection. Information technology and electronic banking executives of five major commercial banks in Accra, Ghana, between January and July 2013 were interviewed. A total of ten respondents were interviewed, two in each of the selected banks. A purposive sampling technique was used in the selection of informants. This approach allows the selection of qualified informants to ensure extensiveness and diversity of opinion. Findings – Although previous literature proffers various factors as key to cloud computing adoption, uses or provisioning, this study brings trust to the fore as an imperative for cloud computing service acquisition by financial institutions. It also shows that trust increases if users perceive that cloud computing service providers act in honesty and in users’ interest, making trust a fundamental factor that informs financial institutions’ decision to acquire cloud computing services. Research limitations/implications – The research introduces a new dimension about the widely held perceptions of the factors that influence adoption of cloud computing services. Practical implications – Developers of cloud computing solutions that are targeted at corporate users must focus on systems that enhances their trustworthiness, as it is a primary criteria for user buy-in. Similarly, any trust-building effort by cloud computing service providers minimizes users’ concerns and pushes the services providers closer to the trust threshold. Originality/value – The paper outlines the trust factors that are imperative for cloud computing uses by financial institutions. This is one of the pioneering papers that address trust issues in cloud computing from the perspective of financial institutions.

Purpose The present investigation goals to empirically test the role of expert cloud on team performance and employee creativity. Here, the expert cloud comprises cloud application, cloud management, cloud infrastructure and cloud resources. The present study aims to identify important and key criteria and examine the relationships among them. In other words, the purpose of this study to find out the impact and relationship between cloud application, cloud management, cloud infrastructure and cloud resources and team performance and employee creativity. Design/methodology/approach Today, human societies’ rapid growth and the environmental changes that surround us every day are clearly visible. They highly affect our activities. In today’s highly complex organizations, people alone cannot handle all the issues that have arisen. As organizational managers are faced with diverse cultures in the governance of organizations, the need to use work teams with different abilities and specializations to achieve the goals of organizations leads managers to use teamwork and focus on employee creativity. On the other hand, the expert cloud makes it possible for human societies like universities, firms, industries, institutes, businesses and colleges to pool and share their human resources’ skills, knowledge and experiences to meet the competitive era’s demands. Therefore, the current investigation examines the impact of expert cloud on team performance and employee creativity. The research information is collected using an online questionnaire. The data collected is analyzed using AMOS and SMART PLS software. Findings All of the formulated hypotheses are supported. The results have shown that cloud application, cloud management, cloud infrastructure and cloud resources positively and significantly affect team performance and employee creativity. Practical implications Managers must be conscious of the vital role that the professional cloud plays in team performance and the innovation of workers. This paper would also make executives more conscious of the powerful tools in the field of cloud computing. Firms can use the outcomes of this paper investigation to improve team performance and employee creativity. Originality/value It is considered one of the initial efforts to demonstrate the impacts of expert cloud on team performance and employee creativity. This study’s value relies on that practitioners and academics may have supporting evidence on the role played by novel technology such as an expert cloud.

Purpose This paper aims to explore the relationship between the concept of the learning organization and that of the co-creation of value. Design/methodology/approach The paper is conceptual in nature and draws on data from a case study of a small highly innovative Australian company. Findings The authors show that, from a value co-creation perspective, the learning organization can be viewed as an open, collaborative, social/economic actor engaged in social/economic activities with other interdependent actors (organizations or stakeholders) in a network or ecosystem of actors to serve its mission/purpose and the well-being of the ecosystem. Research limitations/implications As a conceptual paper, the authors rely primarily on previous research as the basis for the argument. The implications of the findings are that, as value co-creation practices are founded upon the generation and leveraging of specific intangible capital resources, more research located in alternative research paradigms is required. Practical implications There are important implications for organizational leadership in that the practices that underpin value co-creation require the leadership to be able to work constructively with multiple forms of systemic and agentic power. Social implications In increasingly turbulent and hyper-competitive global operational contexts, sustainable value creation is becoming recognized as a collective achievement within a broad eco-system of collaborators. This has implications for the relational capabilities of all collaborators. Originality/value The authors introduce a new perspective on the role of power management in the facilitation of the co-creation of value. Arguing that value creation is becoming recognized as a “collective achievement”, they focus on the collaborative practices that enable such an achievement.

In recent years containerization has revolutionized cloud environments, providing a secure, lightweight, standardized way to package and execute software. Solutions such as Kubernetes enable orchestration of containers in a cluster, including for the purpose of job scheduling. Kubernetes is becoming a de facto standard, available at all major cloud computing providers, and is gaining increased attention from some WLCG sites. In particular, CERN IT has integrated Kubernetes into their cloud infrastructure by providing an interface to instantly create Kubernetes clusters, and the University of Victoria is pursuing an infrastructure-as-code approach to deploying Kubernetes as a flexible and resilient platform for running services and delivering resources. The ATLAS experiment at the LHC has partnered with CERN IT and the University of Victoria to explore and demonstrate the feasibility of running an ATLAS computing site directly on Kubernetes, replacing all grid computing services. We have interfaced ATLAS’ workload submission engine PanDA with Kubernetes, to directly submit and monitor the status of containerized jobs. We describe the integration and deployment details, and focus on the lessons learned from running a wide variety of ATLAS production payloads on Kubernetes using clusters of several thousand cores at CERN and the Tier 2 computing site in Victoria.


The proliferation of Cloud Computing has opened new and attractive offerings for consumers. Cloud Service Providers promote and market packages of cloud computing services that cater to diverse opportunities and user applications. While this has obvious advantages, there are certain factors that are a cause for concern. Monitoring the underlying infrastructure that supports the entire fabric of cloud computing is an aspect that requires a great deal of attention. The aspect of monitoring takes on a great deal of significance when performance and robustness of cloud service on offer is taken into consideration. Although research has been conducted into various cloud computing monitoring techniques, there is scope and room yet for an integrated cloud monitoring solution that can fulfill the requirements of cloud administrators to ensure optimal performance of the underlying infrastructure of a cloud computing network. In this paper, we propose a unified monitoring model that is essentially a composite framework involving hardware and network layers. Studies conducted during our experiments suggest that our unified cloud monitoring approach can significantly aid in reducing overall carbon emissions while helping meeting compliance and audit norms by ensuring that the underlying cloud infrastructure is monitored closely

PurposeThe purpose of this study was to investigate the views of librarians in Iran academic libraries about the extent of their familiarity, application and knowledge of the cloud computing in libraries.Design/methodology/approachThis was a survey research. The statistical population of research consisted of librarians working in five universities in northeastern Iran. The sample (83 librarian) selected by using random sampling method.FindingsThe findings showed that in 2019 librarians familiar with cloud computing was low, but their use of cloud computing services was moderate. Also the findings showed that the item of providing enough computers in the library had the lowest effect on promoting the use of cloud computing and the items. Cloud computing training for librarians and users and broadband Internet were best strategies offered by librarians to promote the use of cloud computing.Originality/valueCloud computing has received less attention from librarians and researchers. However, based on the results of the present study, the broader use of cloud computing in libraries requires specialized and trained staff. Librarians need to broaden their knowledge in this technology.

Cloud Computing has emerged very fast in the IT industry. It is based on virtualization technology and provides internet based computing which provides resource pooling, services sharing and on demand access. Its evolution has reduced must of the cost of enterprises as well as of the other industries working with a huge data. With cloud computing emerging at a much faster rate, the situation may soon be changed. But, despite the fact that it provides a number of facilities to the service providers, it has quite a number of issues related to it. The most important issue related to cloud is its security. From the consumer’s perspective, cloud computing security concerns, especially data security and privacy protection issues, remain the primary inhibitor of cloud computing services. Security is the reason that hinders many enterprises to enter into cloud. So this paper gives a detail of the security risks related to cloud and the possible measures which the enterprises need to ensure before entering Cloud Computing.
