Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to construct the linkage between libraries and up-to-date news. This study developed a system to recommend libraries’ resources to those daily news readers who are interested in the topics of the target news. The analysis of experiments results served as the reference for the development and improvement of linking libraries’ resources with other web resources. Design/methodology/approach – Up-to-date news were gathered through the news feeds to make the integration with the libraries’ records. In task 1, the libraries’ records were linked and recommended to the target libraries’ records which are of the same topics. In task 2, the system aimed to find the relevant libraries’ records for target news. Three recommendation methods were compared in both tasks to find the most effective approach to the system. Findings – Experiment results showed that: at first, in task 1, the system can assign the libraries’ records of the related topics effectively; second, in task 2, the recommending system can obtain a satisfied recall hit rate through human evaluation. Therefore, regarding the popularity of the daily news online, the linkage and recommendation with the libraries’ resources can increase the visibility of the libraries’ resources and eventually promote the information consuming in libraries. Practical implications – The authors have confirmed, using three matrix factorization methods, that weighted matrix factorization used in the libraries’ records recommendation system, could achieve better performance than the other two. Based on the research, the libraries could incorporate the online news and libraries’ resources in practice. Originality/value – To increase the visibility and promote information consuming of libraries, this study proposed a novel method to construct the linkage between library and up-to-date news. The results of data analysis indicate that recommendation of libraries resources through the daily news can achieve effective performance. Thus, it can be inferred that the research results of this study are representative and have practical values in real world practice.

Purpose – This paper aims to review the latest management developments across the globe and pinpoint practical implications from cutting-edge research and case studies. Design/methodology/approach – This briefing is prepared by an independent writer who adds their own impartial comments and places the articles in context. Findings – Rapid developments in technology and the increase in global competition combine to ensure that the business environment is subject to frequent change. Organizations must evolve to succeed and grow. Those which fail to do so are effectively reserving their place among the also-rans. These tough challenges facing companies aren’t going away in a hurry. Being equipped with the ability to adapt is therefore crucial. Indeed, effective performance in both the short and longer term depends on it. The failure rate of change initiatives remains staggeringly high. To say that change management needs to be taken seriously is therefore stating the obvious. Practical implications – The paper provides strategic insights and practical thinking that have influenced some of the world’s leading organizations. Originality/value – The briefing saves busy executives and researchers hours of reading time by selecting only the very best, most pertinent information and presenting it in a condensed and easy-to-digest format.

Purpose While behaviour sequence analysis (BSA) is popular, it is not without limitations, namely, the level of detail required and time taken to run analyses; therefore, this paper aims to outline a novel method, using 30 serial homicide cases as a worked example. Design/methodology/approach Temporal analysis methods are becoming increasingly popular in applied forensic and criminological research. In recent years, BSA has become a widely used approach. Findings Waypoint sequencing provides a streamlined version of the traditional BSA approach, allowing for fewer behaviours to be included and providing a clearer overview of the main behaviours of interest. Practical implications Waypoint sequencing is shown in the current paper through serial killer research to show how to conduct the analyses and how it is effective in current investigations by expediting the process and allowing quicker analysis to facilitate current investigations. Originality/value The current research provides a novel approach to sequence analysis that is more useful in applied settings as it requires fewer behaviours or events than traditional BSA.

Purpose – This study aims to show how diary-style voice recordings can be used to provide social marketers with greater insights into the influences on behaviour than those obtained from interviews. Diary data have the potential to provide deeper insight into the causes of behaviour than can be obtained from retrospective interviews or surveys. Design/methodology/approach – Data were collected from 31 smokers and attempting quitters exploring their attributions for smoking and cigarette purchase, using both face-to face interviews and event-contingent voice recordings over a four-day period, with participants asked to make a recording whenever they were tempted to smoke or buy cigarettes. Findings – Voice recordings provided additional insights into the influences on smoking and cigarette purchase compared to face-to-face interviews. In particular, voice recordings appeared to provide insight into prompts for purchase and smoking that were not recalled during interviews, and, for some respondents, gave them greater control over unwanted behaviour. Research limitations/implications – The study relies on participants’ self-reports, and individuals may be unaware of some of the influences on their behaviour. Practical implications – The study shows that voice-recordings offer a novel method of obtaining insight into subtle influences on consumer behaviour that are insufficiently salient to be recalled in retrospective interviews. Originality/value – The study shows the value of voice recordings for providing near-real-time insights into triggers for different behaviours, and offers potential for extending the method into other areas of social marketing.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to explore the potential of enriching the library subject headings with folksonomy for enhancing the visibility and usability of the library subject headings. Design/methodology/approach The WorldCat-million data set and SocialBM0311 are preprocessing and over 210,000 library catalog records and 124,482 non-repeating tags were adopted to construct the matrix to observe the semantic relation between library subject headings and folksonomy. The proposed system is compared with the state-of-the-art methods and the parameters are fixed to obtain effective performance. Findings The results demonstrate that by integrating different semantic relations from library subject headings and folksonomy, the system’s performance can be improved compared to the benchmark methods. The evaluation results also show that the folksonomy can enrich library subject headings through the semantic relationship. Originality/value The proposed method simultaneous weighted matrix factorization can integrate the semantic relation from the library subject headings and folksonomy into one semantic space. The observation of the semantic relation between library subject headings and social tags from folksonomy can help enriching the library subject headings and improving the visibility of the library subject headings.

Purpose This paper aims to present a special transformation that is applied to univariable polynomials of an arbitrary order, resulting in the generation of the proposed offset eliminated polynomial. This transform-based approach is used in the analysis and synthesis of temporal arc functions, which are time domain polynomial functions possessing two or more values simultaneously. Using the proposed transform, the submerged values of temporal arcs can also be extracted in measurements. Design/methodology/approach The methodology involves a two-step mathematical procedure in which the proposed transform of the weighted modified derivative of the polynomial is generated, followed by multiplication with a linear or ramp function. The transform introduces a stretching in the temporal or spatial domain depending on the type of variable under consideration, resulting in modifications for parameters such as time derivative and relative velocity. Findings Detailed analysis of various parameters in this modified time domain is performed and results are presented. Additionally, using the proposed methodology, the submerged value of any temporal arc function can also be extracted in measurements, thereby unraveling the temporal arc. Practical implications A typical implementation study with results is also presented for an operational amplifier-based temporal arc-producing square rooting circuit for the extraction of the submerged value of the function. Originality/value The proposed transform-based approach has major applications in extracting the values of temporal arc functions that are submerged in conventional experimental measurements, thereby providing a novel method in unraveling that class of special functions.
