Prospects for Venezuela to end-2018

Subject Prospects for Venezuela to end-2018. Significance Political turmoil and economic crisis will not abate, but the dynamics of Venezuela’s crisis are set to change. The boycott of the May 20 presidential election by key opposition groups has eroded any legitimacy President Nicolas Maduro had hoped to obtain. The critical international response has been particularly wounding, with Maduro emerging from the election more isolated and vulnerable.

Significance Trump’s decision is a blow to Venezuelan opposition groups who are lobbying for the tightening of US sanctions on President Nicolas Maduro’s administration. Key opposition figures continue to meet with foreign governments to press for non-recognition of the May 20 presidential election, despite polls showing Maduro’s only viable challenger, Henri Falcon, is pulling ahead. Impacts Low expectations for the Summit of the Americas will raise questions as to the viability of the forum. Efforts to promote broad regional oil sanctions against Venezuela could have severe humanitarian consequences. The economic crisis will worsen, with inflation reaching 454% in the first quarter of 2018 alone.

Subject Ukraine's presidential election. Significance Addressing a March 18 rally of supporters in Kyiv, President Petro Poroshenko said he was confident of winning an honest victory in the March 31 election. Yet ten days from the presidential ballot, the outcome is unpredictable, with allegations of vote-buying and other wrongdoing. Impacts Domestic political turmoil over election results would invite Russia to interfere. Victory for the inexperienced Zelensky may trigger a drive for a constitutional shift of powers from president to parliament. A Tymoshenko win could create further obstacles to the IMF's lending programme, given her past criticism of austerity measures.

Significance Trump’s statement will provide a fillip for President Nicolas Maduro. This will prove temporary, though. The country faces a spiralling economic crisis and a debilitating credit crunch, with bond repayments of 3.8 billion dollars falling due in October and November. Impacts Amid the economic and political turmoil, expectations of a sovereign default will heighten. The new Constituent Assembly will be emboldened to adopt more aggressive measures against government critics. Regional neighbours that agreed the Lima Declaration face a possible political backlash if seen to be at the bidding of the White House.

Significance The petro represents an attempt to alleviate Venezuela's deep economic crisis, which is also affecting military morale. Amid signs of military discontent, 19 officers have been arrested this month. At the same time, despite alleged US pressure and bitter criticism from opposition parties boycotting the May 20 presidential election, opposition candidate Henri Falcon has continued to mobilise for his presidential bid. Impacts Protests will be launched over coming days by the abstentionist block, elevating the risk of violence and disorder. Falcon’s continued candidacy will push abstentionist parties into a deeper and more domestically unpopular partnership with Washington. A disaffected and demoralised security sector will be a primary target for opposition lobbying and pressure. US petro sanctions will likely be followed by countries including Canada, the EU and some South American countries.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to explore agripreneurship development as a strategy for economic growth and development. Design/methodology/approach Though a few related literature were reviewed, this paper relies heavily on the author’s viewpoint regarding how Nigeria can grow and develop its economy through agripreneurship development. Findings The present economic challenges that Nigeria is facing are blamed on overdependence on the oil sector, bad governance, corruption, leadership failure, policy inconsistency, overdependence on imported goods and ostensible neglect of the agricultural sector. Also, policymakers, economic analysts and the government have advocated strongly for diversification of the economy. Besides, there is a consensus among scholars, economic analysts and policymakers that “agriculture is the answer.” Research limitations/implications This paper addresses specifically one sector of the economy – the agricultural sector. On the other hand, economic crisis needs to be addressed holistically by resolving specific issues that confront different sectors of the economy. Practical implications This paper has some insightful policy and practical implications for the Nigerian Government and Nigerians. The government and Nigerians need to take practical steps to grow and develop the economy. On the part of the government, apart from the need to transform the agricultural sector by allocating enough funds to it, the government should establish well-equipped agripreneurship development centers and organize periodically agripreneurship development programmes for the main purpose of training and developing both current and potential agripreneurs who will be able to apply today’s agricultural techniques and practices which involve a great deal of creativity and innovation for a successful agribusiness. The federal government should integrate agripreneurship education into Nigeria’s education system. Similarly, the Nigerian people, particularly the youths or graduates should be encouraged to choose agribusiness as a career. Originality/value While previous papers have offered different solutions to the current economic crisis that Nigeria is experiencing, ranging from economic to structural reforms, this paper differs significantly from others by recommending specifically agripreneurship development as a strategy for revamping Nigeria’s economy from its current recession. Moreover, there is a dearth of literature on agripreneurship and agripreneurship development. This paper therefore fills the literature gap.

Significance The authorities went ahead with the arrest of Nika Melia, leader of the opposition United National Movement (UNM), on February 23 even after the prime minister resigned in protest. Georgian Dream's actions have caused concern in Western capitals that approved its election victory when the opposition cried foul. Impacts The crisis is a setback for the government's stated plan to apply for EU membership in 2024. There is growing talk in the United States about individual sanctions targeting Ivanishvili and his associates. Political turmoil will harm hopes of foreign direct investment and the imminent Anaklia port tender.

Significance Rajoelina faces a wide array of challenges as he looks towards the final two years of his current presidential term. These include severe tensions within his inner circle, a substantial economic crisis, problems linked to his management of the COVID-19 pandemic, and a major humanitarian crisis. Impacts Increasing domestic and international pressure will lead to an opening of borders, possibly by October. The planned vaccine campaign will not prevent a new wave of COVID-19 infections. Economic recovery will be slow.

Significance The assassination follows months of political turmoil and rising gang violence and comes just weeks before elections, scheduled for September 26. Interim Prime Minister Claude Joseph, who has taken charge of the country, said yesterday that measures were being taken “to guarantee the continuity of the state and to protect the nation". Impacts Further political assassinations would exacerbate unrest. The Dominican Republic has closed its border, fearing a migrant surge; the situation will bolster public support there for a border wall. The UN Security Council meets today and may authorise emergency action in Haiti; any substantial redeployment, however, would take time.

Significance The 7.2-magnitude earthquake caused widespread damage to buildings and infrastructure. The disaster comes amid political turmoil, following the assassination of President Jovenel Moise last month, and threatens to compound pre-existing socioeconomic challenges stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic, surging crime rates, and fuel shortages in some areas. Impacts The Dominican Republic is sending aid, but will also increase security along its border to prevent increased migration. Gangs will seek to extort humanitarian groups or siphon off relief supplies to sell on the black market. Henry’s increased reliance on external assistance could affect trust in his administration, especially if elections are delayed too long.

Purpose ISO 9001 is applied by hundreds of thousands of companies throughout the world. For this reason, its effect on company results has been extensively studied. However, the results of those studies are inconclusive and sometimes contradictory. More in-depth research, with a new approach, is therefore necessary. The purpose of this paper is to analyse whether ISO 9001-certified companies suffered the effects of the financial and economic crisis of 2007–2008 to a lesser degree than non-certified ones. Design/methodology/approach A set of 179 companies certified by ISO 9001:2008 and 154 non-certified ones were analysed, as well as the accounting figures for net sales and operating income (EBIT: earnings before interest and taxes) from 2004 to 2012. Findings Companies from the industry and services sectors showed different results. Certified industrial companies achieved better outcomes than their non-certified counterparts. However, the deviations in outcomes were not significant for services companies. Research limitations/implications One limitation of this study is that companies’ official results are not always their true results. Another limitation is that having to do with the criteria followed to suppress extreme cases, which is always subjective. Furthermore, the implications of the results could be of use for those managers who are responsible for implementing ISO 9001 and for deciding whether obtaining the ISO 9001 certification would be beneficial to their companies. Originality/value This study constitutes a new approach for the assessment of the benefits of the ISO 9001 certification.
