This is likely to deal a disastrous blow to the plans of the newly installed government to turn a page on a decade of weak growth and high unemployment. Impacts Manufacturing will be squeezed by supply chain issues and lower demand in export markets. IMF and EU support will relieve any immediate pressure on import cover and healthcare provision. Informal employment may grow and remain higher over the medium to long term.

Hydrogen will play a major role in the decarbonisation of the global economy. Energy companies are likely to extend interests in hydrogen exports and will need a credible hydrogen supply chain. Patent intensity, coupled with recent hydrogen production technology reviews and commercial activity by companies such as Kawasaki, provides support for forecasting a hydrogen supply chain that will include the following steps: Steam reforming of methane or coal, preferably methane, to produce hydrogen; hydrogen liquefaction (LH2) in preference to ammonia or liquid organic hydrogen carriers (LOHC) such as toluene (though this methodology has been trialled for Brunei produced hydrogen); shipping of LH2 to export markets; hydrogen gasification by end users. Given the 20 year lifecycle of patents, this forecast is anticipated to hold until 2030–40. The forecast does not exclude other technical options for hydrogen production and shipping but cost and technical risk will need to be minimised below the mature technologies of steam reforming and hydrogen liquefaction.

Purpose – The modern business community understands the importance of long-term satisfaction of consumer. Enabling the consumer to return products is a significant part of the equation. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the sustainable boundaries in terms of their relationship toward greening a supply chain. Design/methodology/approach – Using interpretive structural modeling the research presents a hierarchy-based model to realize the driving power and dependence of sustainable boundary enablers. Findings – The research shows that there exists a group of enablers having a high driving power and low dependence requiring maximum attention and of strategic importance while another group consists of those variables which have high dependence and are the resultant actions. Practical implications – This classification provides a useful tool to supply chain managers to differentiate between independent and dependent variables and their mutual relationships which would help them to focus while making strategic, tactical or operational decisions as and when required while designing a green supply chain. Originality/value – This research assumes importance in context of greening a supply chain when globally enterprises are getting a lot of pressure from consumers as well as the regulatory measures from the government. Sustainability demands that the resources be used in lean manner through information coordination with all partners in a supply chain. The findings of this study would help delineate those variables that should to be necessarily considered to design a sustainable supply chain.


Subject Outlook for the civil aerospace industry. Significance Following the visit of President Hassan Rouhani to Europe, Iran is set to buy more than 100 airliners from Airbus over the next five years. The return of post-sanctions Iran as a buyer of commercial aircraft to re-equip its fleet gives both Airbus and Boeing hopes of a renewed surge in orders to fill any slowdown in the civil aerospace market caused by weak global growth. Impacts Iran may order up to 500 aircraft in 2016-21, worth 50 billion dollars overall. Cheap oil will lead some airlines to delay acquiring more fuel-efficient aircraft, affecting the global supply chain. Aircraft-, systems- and enginemakers will look forward to strong revenues in coming years.


Significance Despite the budget's commitment to social investment reflecting recent growth and post-recessionary optimism, emerging trends in the national and global economy, compounded by the risk of political instability, threaten to destabilise Spain’s economy over the coming years. Impacts Stretched public finances will leave little space to counter economic shocks. Pressure on existing markets will encourage companies further to diversify their export markets. Weaknesses in Latin America may push Spanish companies to pivot towards Europe and North America.


Significance The downturn came after a strong 2019 when there was a record issuance of green bonds. Impacts Green bonds will be a key part of future efforts to make the global economy greener and more resilient to future crises. The development and harmonisation of taxonomies, principles and standards will contribute to the long-term growth of green debt. The growth of the green bond asset class will help create new jobs in green finance.

PurposeThis study analyses how family-run businesses operating in the Italian food sector faced the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic that affected the global economy, with the support of management accounting systems.Design/methodology/approachThe methodology used is based on a survey questionnaire conducted on Italian family firms involved in food business. Both qualitative and quantitative data were collected and analysed.FindingsThis study categorised the companies into three groups, according to their long-term orientation and the use of management accounting tools. The results highlight proactive versus passive companies that emphasise various recovery paths from the perspective of performance.Research limitations/implicationsLimitations refer to the attention on a single country and the sample size.Practical implicationsThe main practical implication refers to management at different levels that should better understand how a clear long-term orientation can maintain the competitive position and pre-crisis performance.Originality/valueThis study examines the measures launched by companies to address challenges originating from the COVID-19 pandemic.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to design a model that can accurately forecast the supply chain sales. Design/methodology/approach This paper proposed a new model based on lightGBM and LSTM to forecast the supply chain sales. In order to verify the accuracy and efficiency of this model, three representative supply chain sales data sets are selected for experiments. Findings The experimental results show that the combined model can forecast supply chain sales with high accuracy, efficiency and interpretability. Practical implications With the rapid development of big data and AI, using big data analysis and algorithm technology to accurately forecast the long-term sales of goods will provide the database for the supply chain and key technical support for enterprises to establish supply chain solutions. This paper provides an effective method for supply chain sales forecasting, which can help enterprises to scientifically and reasonably forecast long-term commodity sales. Originality/value The proposed model not only inherits the ability of LSTM model to automatically mine high-level temporal features, but also has the advantages of lightGBM model, such as high efficiency, strong interpretability, which is suitable for industrial production environment.

PurposeSupply chain integration (SCI) is key to implementing omni-channel retailing (OCR) strategy. In this paper, the authors explore the role of digitalization as a driver of SCI, as well the role of human capital (HC) in digitalization, using a knowledge management (KM) perspective.Design/methodology/approachAn empirical study was conducted using survey research. A sample of 188 omni-channel retailers in the Chinese market was analyzed using factor analysis and structured equation modeling (SEM) to examine the hypotheses presented in the conceptual model.FindingsThis study reveals that HC is positively related to the level of a firm's digitalization in OCR, and that digitalization is positively related to the retailer's SCI. Moreover, the authors found that employees' capital has a greater impact on digitalization than managers' capital, while digitalization has a stronger driving effect on internal and customer integration.Research limitations/implicationsThe findings suggest that although digitalization requires retailers to accept the long-term investment challenges, it has a significant positive effect on the key of OCR strategy implementation, i.e. SCI. The findings also provide evidence for the application of KM in OCR, as this theoretical lens enriches our understanding of the phenomena of SCI in OCR and provides explanation to our results by linking digitalization and HC.Originality/valueDigitalization is quantified and examined in OCR. Moreover, this study reveals the importance of HC on the implementation of digitalization and the different effects of digitalization on each dimension of SCI.

Purpose This study aims to analyze the complexities of the Brazilian soybean supply chain (SSC) and develop strategic interventions to improve the origin system’s performance. Design/methodology/approach This study used stakeholder interviews to identify the SSC bottlenecks and determine and assess drivers of competitiveness. A methodological framework based on the systems thinking approach for developing long-term structural changes was used. The problem was structured using behavior over time graph and causal loop modeling to propose three investment strategies to solve the logistics problem in SSC. Findings This study highlights the gaps in coordination between stakeholders and the public sector regarding the public policy for infrastructure investment. Three strategic interventions were developed to address the agro-industrial logistical problem, namely, investment in storage, multimodal transport systems and improvements in existing transport infrastructure. To overcome transport and storage logistics limitations, the authors suggest different forms of partnerships, including public-private partnerships. Research limitations/implications This research is limited to evaluating an agricultural commodity (soybean) and does not include its by-products. The sample of stakeholders was limited and the boundary of analysis was Brazil. Nevertheless, the study showed how strategic interventions could be developed following a holistic analysis. Practical implications The proposed integrated approach illustrates the development of three strategic initiatives. It can be implemented by stakeholders, including the public sector, which is the basis for providing assertive long-term investments in Brazilian logistics. Social implications The SSC analysis could promote the implementation of systemically determined interventions and strategies. It could significantly improve the performance of agricultural systems and help the formulation of public policies aimed at rural development. Originality/value The use of system dynamics to identify intervention points is an essential contribution to mitigating the SSC’s hindrances. Moreover, the combining methodologies resulted in comprehensive intervention strategies.

PurposeIn today's global economy, developing supply chain agility (SCA) and lean practices (LP) as resource-based view and dynamic capabilities are essential for firms to sustain their competitive advantage (CA) and enhance their operational performance (OP). The purpose of this paper is to develop and empirically test a framework to investigate how CA is achieved through SCA and LP and how these, in turn, can enhance a firm's OP.Design/methodology/approachFor data collection, the authors adopted the survey method using self-administered questionnaires. Two-source survey data were collected in two rounds (separated by a two-month lag time) from supply chain managers, operational managers and general managers. The purpose of collecting data in two rounds was to reduce common-method bias. Likert scale (1–5) was used in the questionnaire. Smart PLS 3 and SPSS 23 were used for the data analysis purpose.FindingsSCA was found to directly and positively affect OP. LP also positively affected OP. In addition, CA fully mediated the relationship between SCA, LP and OP.Practical implicationsThis study encourages the managers of manufacturing firms to adapt LP and their supply chains (SCs) to become agile and leverage the advantages of their implementation to improve their OP and succeed in the market.Originality/valueThis study is one of the first to investigate the effect of SCA and LP on OP. Furthermore, the first study examines CA's mediating impact on the relationship between SCA, LP and OP.
