Automakers will rev up electric vehicle output

Significance This is pushing up prices, and accelerating changes in product lines, corporate structures and supply chains. Meanwhile, major vehicle and parts manufacturers are investing heavily in new product and process development to focus on electric vehicles (EVs) and meet targets for future carbon emission reductions. Impacts Parts shortages and higher costs are prompting automakers to prioritise higher-margin models in order to capitalise on pricing leverage. The demise of traditional auto manufacturing will threaten jobs, lead to factory closures and make EV output a polarising political issue. US-China tensions will plague EV output: China has 25 times more large battery manufacturing plants than the United States. As demand for low-skilled roles falls and demand for high-skilled roles such as automation specialists rises, re-skilling will be key.

There is an extensive literature on new product and process development (NPD). However, the analysis of decision making and decision support requirements in this area is less well researched. Here we discuss decision making in the context of NPD and identify decision types and decision attributes relevant to the NPD context. They illustrate the approach by analyzing NPD decisions in three industrial cases with a focus on early stage NPD decisions. They create a set of attributes with reference to the decision making literature. They find these attributes can be used to codify decisions in order to characterize them. They find the design decisions in these case studies to be creative and brainstorming-led with a low level of structure. The results provide insights both on decision making in NPD in practice and on the requirements for group decision support systems (GDSS) in this area. The authors suggest that an argumentation-based GDSS that allows structure to be developed may be suitable for these decisions. The cases are used to illustrate the application of the approach and show an interesting set of example decision types, but do not cover the range of NPD decisions that may be evident in a larger set of companies.

Significance Ten years after first imposing export restrictions on these metals, China's dominance has shifted but not waned. President Xi Jinping's visit to a rare earth magnet factory at the height of the trade war with Washington in 2019 highlights how China's dominance has moved downstream. Impacts Permanent magnets will account for three-quarters of rare earth demand by 2030, up from one-quarter today. Electric vehicles and offshore wind will drive demand and be most vulnerable to supply shocks. The United States has ramped up mining production at home, and by next year could start processing, which is today done in China. The environmental burden that China has borne for decades will shift towards other countries, particularly in South-east Asia.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is, first, to examine the design requirements of Islamic fashion in the new product-development process; second, to explore the different practices of new product-development activities from successful and unsuccessful new product lines; and third, to investigate the sequence of the new product-development practice in the fashion industry, specifically the Islamic fashion industry in Indonesia. Design/methodology/approach Questionnaires were distributed and semi-structured interviews were conducted to collect information regarding the practice of the new product-development activities. The Mann–Whitney U test was performed based on the quality of the new product-development activities of 100 Islamic fashion firms, including five innovative companies that had won several awards in Indonesia. An analysis of the extent to which fashion firms were engaging in new product-development activities provided a more detailed picture of the sequence of those activities. Findings Islamic norms were adapted during the early design and promotional phases of new product development in Islamic fashion. Various choices of design and colour in Islamic fashion were also perceived as a way of preaching to women to dress more accordingly to the Islamic norm. The new product-development activities that were conducted differently for successful vs unsuccessful new product lines were idea conceptualisation, market analysis, technical and engineering analysis, financial analysis and commercialisation. The commercialisation phase was given the least priority of all the activities. Nevertheless, it contributed to the very first communication to the customers about new product lines. Originality/value This study makes an important contribution to the deeper and more detailed research on how Islamic fashion companies perceive Islamic values during new product developments and how they perform new product-development activities between successful and unsuccessful products.

Purpose This paper aims to study the influence of innovation on micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSME) performance in Colombia through the 403 MSMES survey analysis. In particular, this paper measures the effect of participation in R&D alliances, product innovation and process innovation on it. Design/methodology/approach MSME performance is measured through a composite index, estimated through principal components analysis using polychoric correlations, which is based on eight self-reported assessments of MSME performance. Then, this measure of performance is related to MSME participation in R&D alliances and the product and process development stance of the MSME based on an adaptation of the Miles and Snow business classification scheme, by means of an ANOVA and a linear regression. Findings Colombian SMEs are not significantly benefitted from participation on R&D alliances. Instead, their performance appears to be dependent upon their internal innovation efforts directed to product development. Moreover, the results suggest that imitators get a performance almost as high as innovators. Originality/value Innovation activities in Colombian SMEs are carried out informally, as they are mostly uninterested to engage in R&D activities and to develop new products by own initiative. Moreover, few of them have an R&D department. In regard to technology, results suggest that almost half of SMEs are classified as followers, namely, they use the same technology as competitors.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to address the emerging need to map knowledge and information with a novel classification, suitable to have a clear and integrated overview of the design method, models and techniques from both the sides of product and process. The proposed classification allows to understand main relevance of different design methods, models and techniques according their characteristic and also level in where company usually applied. Design/methodology/approach The authors decided to structure the research into three steps: from the analysis of background literature, in order to draw the main evidences for the development of a novel classification, to their application. First, the papers search related to collect the different methods used in literature. Second, paper characterization which aims to understand main traits and usefulness of design methods, models and tools. Third, the assessment of design methods, models and tools according proposed classification. Findings Each method, model or technique would be more useful according to the context in which is applied. Most of methods and modes can be continuously improving, considering different sub-classification or complement each other, striving to compensate to the extent possible for weakness in any one of the approaches. Research limitations/implications The proposed classification did not deliver absolute results in every analyzed model or techniques, it delivered a wide range of possibilities in every sub-classification, thus the engineers get multiple options to choose depending on its main goal or the available resources. Originality/value The author’s proposal aims at filling a classification gap in the design method literature, which has to plausible in use. The different alternatives can be represented according to a scalable and hierarchical logic embedding also a more structured evaluation of the methods and tools in practice.

The purpose of this paper is to give a general idea about the future of electric vehicles (EV) and their effects on carbon emission. More specifically, an analysis of the complete transition to EVs by 2050 and whether renewable energy would be enough to supply their electricity demand. Some difficulties are facing such a transition and its background. To support the analysis, an estimation of the supply and demand of electricity in the United States is made using assumptions and data provided by (mostly) government agencies. The estimation uses existing data to predict the amount of renewable power available for EVs in 2050 and the amount of power that EVs will require. These predictions have pointed out that power generated by renewable means (by 2050) available for EVs and the EVs’ power needs are both around 1 trillion kWh. Further discussions about energy storage and transportation conclude that the power generated by renewable energy may not be able to cover all the energy needs of EVs but a significant amount. The complete transition to EV in the future will largely be supported by clean and renewable energy, so the transition is warranted as it will greatly reduce carbon emissions, pollution, and even global warming.

Subject Prospects for China's politics and foreign relations in 2019. Significance The relationship with the United States, and its domestic repercussions, look likely to be the foremost political issue of 2019 -- even more so than this year.
