Comparative study of project management and critical success factors of greening new and existing buildings in Singapore

Purpose – With pressing issues of climate change, greening buildings have emerged as a viable solution for meeting the increasing demand for buildings with minimal environmental impacts. Hence, the purpose of this paper is to establish the possibility of achieving this goal by investigating the drivers, challenges, and critical success factors (CSFs) involved in greening existing buildings. Since most of the relevant literature focuses on only acknowledging CSFs for new building projects in general, this study seeks to distinguish CSFs that are particularly related to the greening of existing buildings. Design/methodology/approach – Based on a review of past literature, 28 selected factors were identified and were categorised into five main groups, namely pre-project-related factors, project management-related factors, client-related factors, project team-related factors, and external factors. Because older buildings have more constraints than new buildings, a comparison of the CSFs for greening new and existing buildings was also made. Surveys and interviews were conducted to validate the CSFs identified. Findings – The top CSFs in each building category (new vs existing) were then further examined and analysed. These are “top management support”, “effective planning and control”, “building owner's involvement”, “cost management”, “responsiveness of building owners”, “clear scope and priorities of stakeholders”, and “legislation”. Furthermore, there was a strong consensus on the rankings of most factors between new and existing buildings. Research limitations/implications – By understanding the factors that are crucial for managing and delivering successful green projects in the Singaporean context, these CSFs can be used to direct an organisation's efforts in identifying critical issues and tackling them to achieve high performance. Originality/value – An ambitious goal of greening 80 per cent of Singapore's building stocks has been set by the government in the Second Green Building Master Plan. To help achieve this goal, this study contributes to the knowledge of project management issues that would determine the success of managing new green building projects and retrofitting existing ones.

Purpose Critical success factors (CSF) for lean six sigma (LSS) using quality 4.0 are not researched so far. This study aims to bridge this gap. It also validates CSF already identified for LSS under conventional technologies. Design methodology approach Empirical research using the questionnaire method is conducted. Construct of the questionnaire is checked using Cronbach’s alpha and responses received are analysed using t-test and exploratory factor analysis. Findings In total, 20 factors are evaluated for LSS success. It includes 7 factors related to quality 4.0 technologies and 13 related to the conventional set-up. All 7 quality 4.0 related factors were found critical; whereas, under traditional set-up, 11 factors out of 13 were found critical. Practical implications The study will help enterprises in the fast and effective adoption of quality 4.0 and seamless integration with LSS. The post-Covid-19 business scenario is expected to be information technology focussed. The findings of this study will be useful in these circumstances. Consultants and practitioners can prioritise their efforts based on newly identified CSF. The new revelation about CSF for LSS in quality 4.0 enriches theory as well. Social implications Developing skills based on newly identified CSF will help people in remaining employable in the era of automation, robotics and artificial intelligence which is otherwise ill-famed for destroying jobs. Originality value CSF for LSS using quality 4.0 is a new contribution. It differentiates CSF established earlier for conventional technologies. Moreover, many CSF are common for LSS and industry 4.0, therefore this study will also help in smoother adoption of industry 4.0/quality 4.0 in organisations.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to utilize critical success factors (CSF) and identify items Green Belt (GB) practitioners note as barriers to completion of Six Sigma (SS) projects in a major manufacturer setting. Design/methodology/approach – The design of this paper is a descriptive study of a single location of a global manufacturer’s internal data and survey of accredited GBs who have completed an SS project for company accreditation utilizing company focus on CSFs. Findings – The results demonstrate the GB practitioners have competing priorities, have time constraints and lack project management skills that reduce timely completion of SS projects. Top management responsibility for SS GB projects are defined through the CSFs of leadership, project management and project selection. Research limitations/implications – This study pertains to the single manufacturing location of a major, multinational company. The survey of SS GBs is limited to those individuals who have become accredited to company requirements, in the initial stages of strategic implementation, resulting in a small sample size. All GB projects follow the DMAIC (Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve and Control) methodology. The implications may be reproduced in similar environments where GBs conduct SS projects to test the robustness of the study. Practical implications – This study underscores the importance of proper coaching and mentoring of SS practitioners, especially those who are expected to contribute as GBs in a part-time manner. Implementation of SS goes beyond initial deployment and requires active mentoring of GB practitioners to make sure that SS projects get proper focus. The results are relevant to both researchers and practitioners. Originality/value – This paper examines SS projects with a GB perspective, an important contribution to SS but lacking in the literature. While GBs are important to SS implementation, and serve as a pathway to fulltime SS personnel, there are few studies that note this work. This study will support practitioners in the importance of wider SS deployment through active support of GBs, where top management responsibility for GB success is defined through CSFs for improvement.

The main goal of this research is to examine and then prioritize the critical success factors (CSFs) and delay reasons across the project management implementation stage. The study adopted the qualitative approach to introduce a full classification of the CSFs and delay reasons in project management. A total of 44 articles were reviewed to mine the various CSFs and delays based on conclusions of previous literature. This review leads to define a matrix of factors that are aligned with the project management in the context of the Jordanian construction project. Besides, the questionnaire instrument was designed based on outcomes of the critical analysis of literature; this instrument was administrated to a sample of 198 respondents across 20 Jordanian construction projects. The study sample entailed project managers, engineers, and senior department heads who were asked to assess the relevance and importance of the extracted CFSs. The questionnaire instrument was designed based on a 5-points Likert scale. Further, the data analysis was conducted based on the means values of the responses. The literature review resulted in categorizing the factors into five groups, namely, human’s related factors, organizational and managerial, material factor, project-related factors, and the external environment and stakeholders’ factors. This research applied a taxonomy approach to classifying the mean values throughout three ideas, namely, the classification of the major success factors and delays, the exploration of the sub success factors and delays within each significant factor, and last the exploration of the most critical sub success factors and delays regardless of the significant factor they are linked to this group. According to the analyses results, the major success factors were evaluated based on priority ranking, and the results showed that the projects related factors group was the most crucial motive of either success or delays. Still, human-related factors were the least important factors group; however, the “coherent team.” was the most sub factor evaluated. For the organizational and managerial sub-factors, the functional manager support was the most evaluated subfactor. Last, the materials sub-factor of the availability of materials was ranked as the most subfactor evaluated.

Purpose The contribution of women toward entrepreneurial activities has gained significant attention in recent years because of economic and social concerns, government support and initiatives and increased education and awareness. Women’s entrepreneurial activity has increased and women-owned businesses can today be found in every sector of the economy, irrespective of region. In India, government bodies such as the Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) and several other organizations (private and NGOs) have adopted considerable measures to promote women entrepreneurship (WE). To improve WE, the critical factors of WE adoption need to be identified and evaluated. The purpose of this paper is to identify, prioritize and evaluate the critical success factors of WE adoption in Indian MSMEs. Design/methodology/approach This paper proposes a methodology based on fuzzy analytical hierarchal process to prioritize the critical success factors of WE adoption. A numerical analysis of Indian MSMEs is presented to demonstrate the use of the proposed method. This proposed method considered fuzzy framework, which can handle impreciseness and uncertainty. Sensitivity analysis is also performed to test the robustness of the proposed model. Findings Potential critical success factors are identified from relevant literature and validated by industry experts. This research finalize the critical success factors of WE adoption in Indian MSMEs under seven dimensions, so prioritization of identified critical success factors can be developed and insights relationship of factors would be explored. The results of the study found that individual, management and government dimensions take paramount importance while women aim to become entrepreneurs in Indian MSMEs. Research limitations/implications This study is limited to identifying evaluation factors; other factors have not been identified and categorized. Evaluation is one by experts in this area so it is natural that views of decision-makers may be subjective and vary with regard to industry-type, priorities, resources, etc. Practical implications This study will help industry to identify, evaluate and prioritize factors for successful implementation of women entrepreneurship. MSMEs could device these factors by applying the outcome of the study in their decisions with higher priority to implement women entrepreneurship culture. Originality/value Potential factors are identified from relevant literature and validated by industry experts. Indian MSMEs could device these factors by applying the outcome of the study in their decisions with higher priority to adopt women entrepreneurship.

It is necessary to identify critical success factors (CSFs) that affect the construction process. This paper’s aim is to define the CSFs considering views of all construction project stakeholders. The contribution of this paper is to categorize project success factors into categories and quantify the effect of each category taking into account the effect of all stakeholders on project efficiency and progress. To achieve this objective, a comprehensive literature review was carried out. After literature review, 40 success factors were compiled into seven categories: project-related factors, company- and work-related factors, client-related factors, project management factors, design-team-related factors, contractor-related factors, project-manager-related factors. Consequently, a survey including these listed success factors was prepared and distributed to various experts in the construction field to be ranked; 148 responses were received. Employing the Relative Importance Index (RII) and traditional Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) method with Saaty random index that prioritizes these CSFs, the collected data were analyzed after receiving responses. Even though there were disagreements in stakeholders’ views and their goals, significant areas have been identified as project financial issues, managerial aspects, and authorities’ approval mechanism. The outcome of this paper would be used by construction industry professionals to support, evaluate, and measure the success of projects for better allocation of resources.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to assess the influence of value management (VM) critical success factors (CSFs) on the implementation of VM activities in building projects with a view to promoting sustainability of construction industry in Egypt. Design/methodology/approach The VM CSFs and implementation activities were recognized from earlier studies; questionnaire survey was conducted to collect data from relevant stakeholders, and the collected data was subjected to exploratory factor analysis. Consequently, the influence of VM CSFs on VM implementation was generated via partial least square structural equation modelling. In addition, through relative importance ranking analysis, the significance VM CSFs were examined. Findings The findings from the proposed model revealed a strong relationship between VM implementation activities and its CSFs; the relationship is at a moderate level with an effect of 22.0%. This indicates that, VM CSFs would be useful to implement VM in the Egyptian building industry. Research limitations/implications Although these studies have been confined to Egypt’s VM studies; they may apply to other developing countries that have not carried out these studies. It is therefore vital, in those countries where the exercise has been entirely undertaken, to analyze the various measures to promote the application of the method. Practical implications This research would be of benefit to stakeholders in building industries to be aware of VM phases and its CSFs that demand utmost consideration. Also, the identified CSFs are expected to enhance the success and value of building projects by adopting VM. Originality/value The novelty of this research work will be a benchmark or board for decision-makers to eliminate the unwanted cost and enhance quality by adopting VM in Egypt’s building projects to achieve their sustainable projects.

Climate change has become one of the challenges for development. The building sector represents the largest resource of greenhouse gas production. Iraq depends on fossil fuels in producing energy, electricity with a lack of energy standards. This has made Iraq one of the utmost carbon-intense economic in the world. There is a lack of studies about green building retrofitting (GBR) projects in Iraq as well as lack of awareness about the importance of this concept and its welfare regarding the reduction of the climate change crisis. The enhancement of the implementation of GBR projects in Iraq will be a promising solution to overcome the negative impact of the existing buildings. The GBR projects represent a complicated project that needs an effective project management practices. It is crucial to identify the challenges that restrict the success of these ventures. This paper provides critical success factors (CSF) that will stimulate the achievement of GBR ventures in Iraq. A questionnaire survey is conducted to collect reliable data from the experts in retrofitting projects in Basra, Iraq. Findings showed that the top five challenges in implementing GBR are; absence of government legislation, lack of awareness about benefits of GBR, low government and private sectors’ investment, incompetent team members, and lack of sustainability knowledge. Additionally, the top five CSFs are; efficient legislation, competent team members, subsidies or tax reduction, sufficient experience and competence of the project manager. This research will contribute to the improvement of project management practices in GBR projects, reduction of environmental pollution and enhancement of Iraq’s oil revenues instead of using oil as energy fuel.

PurposeThe purpose of this study is to investigate the critical success factors for total quality management implementation and implications for sustainable academic libraries in Ghana. This study is part of a PhD project that focussed on selected technical university libraries in Ghana.Design/methodology/approachThis study adopted a quantitative approach to collect the data. Samples of 124 participants were involved in this study. PLS-SEM (Smart PLS3) software was used to analyse the data. Convergent, discriminant validity assessment was computed. Eight variables of critical success factors were tested in relation to total quality management implementation at selected academic libraries in Ghana.FindingsThis study established that out of the eight variables tested, six of them (i.e. top management commitment, employee innovation employee training, organisational culture, teamwork and effective communication, quality performance) indicated a significant positive relationship with total quality management implementation apart from strategic planning and human resource management.Research limitations/implicationsThis study was limited to eight variables as the critical success factors mentioned in the previous paragraph. The use of one methodology might be a limitation as the use of multimethod might have given a more comprehensive picture than the case. This study was limited to only technical university libraries in Ghana hence caution must be exercised when applying the results to contextually different academic environments. The results are applicable to academic universities library in Ghana and beyond if they are adjusted to suit the context.Practical implicationsThis study is timely as it may lead to effective total quality management implementation and the sustainability of technical university libraries in Ghana and Africa in general.Originality/valueThe proposed model can be used to enhance the smooth implementation of total quality management in academic libraries in general and Ghana in particular. The framework is termed as Eddie and Pat's Achievement of Quality Performance (EPAfQP) model.
