Modeling and simulation of frictional disc/pad interface considering the effects of thermo-mechanical coupling

Purpose This study aims to investigate numerically a thermomechanical behavior of disc brake using ANSYS 11.0 which applies the finite element method (FEM) to solve the transient thermal analysis and the static structural sequentially with the coupled method. Computational fluid dynamics analysis will help the authors in the calculation of the values of the heat transfer (h) that will be exploited in the transient evolution of the brake disc temperatures. Finally, the model resolution allows the authors to visualize other important results of this research such as the deformations and the Von Mises stress on the disc, as well as the contact pressure of the brake pads. Design/methodology/approach A transient finite element analysis (FEA) model was developed to calculate the temperature distribution of the brake rotor with respect to time. A steady-state CFD model was created to obtain convective heat transfer coefficients (HTC) that were used in the FE model. Because HTCs are dependent on temperature, it was necessary to couple the CFD and FEA solutions. A comparison was made between the temperature of full and ventilated brake disc showing the importance of cooling mode in the design of automobile discs. Findings These results are quite in good agreement with those found in reality in the brake discs in service and those that may be encountered before in literature research investigations of which these will be very useful for engineers and in the design field in the vehicle brake system industry. These are then compared to experimental results obtained from literatures that measured ventilated discs surface temperatures to validate the accuracy of the results from this simulation model. Originality/value The novelty of the work is the application of the FEM to solve the thermomechanical problem in which the results of this analysis are in accordance with the realized and in the current life of the braking phenomenon and in the brake discs in service thus with the thermal gradients and the phenomena of damage observed on used discs brake.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to examine the effects of thick wall parameters of a cavity on combined convection in a channel. In other words, conjugate heat transfer is solved. Design/methodology/approach – Galerkin weighted residual finite element method is used to solve the governing equations of mixed convection. Findings – The streamlines, isotherms, local and average Nusselt numbers are obtained and presented for different parameters. It is found heat transfer is an increasing function of dimensionless thermal conductivity ratio. Originality/value – The literature does not have mixed convection and conjugate heat transfer problem in a channel with thick walled cavity.

Purpose The internal fixation plate of bone fractures by using polylactic acid (PLA) has attracted the attention of many researchers, as it is biodegradable and biocompatible to the human body. However, its brittleness has led to implant fracture. On the contrary, polypropylene carbonate (PPC), which is also biodegradable and biocompatible, has an excellent elongation at break. The purpose of this paper is to compare the PLA fixation plate with the new fixation plate made up of PLA/PPC blends by using finite element analysis (FEA). Design/methodology/approach The mandible bone from CT data set and fixation plate was designed by using the MIMICS, Amira and Solidworks softwares. Abaqus software was used for FEA of PLA/PPC fixation plate applied on the fractured mandible bone. A model of mandibular bone with a fracture in the body was subjected to incisor load. The analysis was run to determine the von Mises stress, elongation of the fixation plate and the displacement of the fractured gap of PLA/PPC blends fixation plate. Findings The von Mises stress predicted that all the blend compositions were safe to be used as a fixation plate since the stress values were less than the yield strength. In addition, the stress value of the fixation plate was gradually decreased up to 20 percent when the amount of PPC increased to 30 percent. This indicates that the stress shielding effect was successfully reduced. The elongation of the fixation plate was gradually increased from 11.54 to 12.55 µm as the amount of PPC in the blends increased from 0 to 30 percent, thereby illustrating that the flexibility of the fixation plate was improved by the addition of PPC. Finally, the measured displacement of the fractured gap for all compositions of PLA/PPC blends fixation plate is less than 150 µm, which proves the likely success of fracture fixation by using the PLA/PPC blends. Research limitations/implications An optimum solution of PLA/PPC blends and another new material such as compatibilizer need to be introduced in the blends in order to improve the performance of PLA/PPC blends as a new material for a fixation plate. Besides, by using the same method of producing PLA/PPC blends, longer durations for in vitro degradation of PLA/PPC blends are essential to further understand the degradation behavior of the blends applied in the human body. Finally, it is also important to further test the mechanical strength of PLA/PPC blends during the degradation period to know the current strength of the implant in the healing process of the bone. Practical implications PLA fixation plate and screw can commercially be used in CMF surgery since they reduce cost because of the elimination of secondary surgery to remove the fixation plate and screw after the healing process. Social implications It is hoped that the advantages of this research will ensure the market of PLA product to continue expanding in medical application. Originality/value This study is one of the alternative ways for the biomedical researchers to improve the elongation break of PLA. Currently, many researchers focus on polymeric materials such as PLA, poly(glycolic) acid and polydioxanone blends, which were extensively being used in CMF surgery. However, the work on PLA/PPC blends to be used as one of the materials for the CMF fixation plate is very limited, if any. PPC, the proposed material for this research, will improve the mechanical performance of PLA fixation plate and screw to become more sustainable and flexible when applied on human mandible bone.

Purpose This study aims to deal with the numerical investigation of ferrofluid flow and heat transfer inside a right-angle triangular cavity in the presence of a magnetic field. The vertical wall is partially heated, whereas other walls are kept cold. The effects of thermal radiation are included in the analysis. The governing equations including continuity, momentum and energy equations are converted to nondimensional form using viable variables. Design/methodology/approach Finite element method (FEM)-based simulations are performed using finite element approach to investigate the effects of the volume fraction of ferroparticles (Fe3O4), the length of the heating element and the dimensionless numbers including Rayleigh and Hartmann numbers on the streamlines, isotherms and Nusselt number. Findings It is demonstrated that both horizontal and vertical velocity components increase with the length of the heating element, whereas the dimensionless temperature decreases the heating domain. It is observed that an increase of 10% in the volume fraction of ferroparticles increases Nusselt number more than 12%, and 20% increase in the volume fraction of ferroparticles increases more than 30%, depending upon the length of the heating element. Originality/value This is a new study showing the significance of the magnetic nanoparticles for the enhancement of heat transfer rate in a triangular cavity.

The aim of this animal study was to develop a model of orthodontic tooth movement using a microimplant as a TSAD in rodents. A finite element model of the TSAD in alveolar bone was built usingμCT images of rat maxilla to determine the von Mises stresses and displacement in the alveolar bone surrounding the TSAD. Forin vivovalidation of the FE model, Sprague-Dawley rats (n=25) were used and a Stryker 1.2 × 3 mm microimplant was inserted in the right maxilla and used to protract the right first permanent molar using a NiTi closed coil spring. Tooth movement measurements were taken at baseline, 4 and 8 weeks. At 8 weeks, animals were euthanized and tissues were analyzed by histology and EPMA. FE modeling showed maximum von Mises stress of 45 Mpa near the apex of TSAD but the average von Mises stress was under 25 Mpa. Appreciable tooth movement of 0.62 ± 0.04 mm at 4 weeks and 1.99 ± 0.14 mm at 8 weeks was obtained. Histological and EPMA results demonstrated no active bone remodeling around the TSAD at 8 weeks depicting good secondary stability. This study provided evidence that protracted tooth movement is achieved in small animals using TSADs.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to present a finite element analysis (FEA) which shows the comparison between a layered cylindrical hollow roller bearing and hollow roller bearing. Design/methodology/approach In this work, FEA is carried out to solve the elastic contact between a layered cylindrical hollow roller and flat contact for different hollowness percentages ranging from 10 to 80 per cent. Graphical solution is developed to determine the optimum hollowness of a cylindrical roller bearing for which induced bending stress should be within endurance limit of the material. Findings Different parameters such as von Mises stress, contact pressure, contact width and deformation are shown here. Originality/value The value of this research work is the calculation of contact width and other parameters using FEA for layered cylindrical hollow roller bearing.

The biomechanical study helps us to understand the mechanics of the human cervical spine. A three dimensional Finite Element (FE) model for C3 to C6 level was developed using computed tomography (CT) scan data to study the mechanical behaviour of the cervical spine. A moment of 1 Nm was applied at the top of C3 vertebral end plate and all degrees of freedom of bottom end plate of C6 were constrained. The physiological motion of the cervical spine was validated using published experimental and FE analysis results. The von Mises stress distribution across the intervertebral disc was calculated along with range of motion. It was observed that the predicted results of functional spine units using FE analysis replicate the real behaviour of the cervical spine.

Purpose Nuts and bolts have been used as fasteners of steel structures for many years. However, these structures remain susceptible to fire damage. While conducting fire experiments on steel structures is sometimes necessary, to better understand their behavior, such experiments remain costly and require specialized equipment and testing facilities. This paper aims to present a highly accurate three-dimensional (3D) finite element (FE) model of ASTM A325 bolt subjected to tension loading under simulated fire conditions. The FE model is compared to the results of experimental testing for verification purposes and is proven to predict the response of similar bolts up to certain temperatures without the need for repeated testing. Design/methodology/approach A parametric 3D FE model simulating tested specimens was constructed in the ANSYS Workbench environment. The model included the intricate details of the bolt and nut threads, as well as all the other components of the specimens. A pretension load, a tension force and a heat profile were applied to the model, and a nonlinear analysis was performed to simulate the experiments. Findings The results of the FE model were in good agreement with the experimental results, deviations of results between experimental and FE results were within acceptable range. This should allow studying the behavior of structural bolts without the need for expensive testing. Originality/value Detailed 3D FE models have been created by the authors have been created to study the behavior of structural bolts and compared with experiments conducted by the authors.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to present a study of radial aircraft tire for safety assessment during various scenarios. Design/methodology/approach A detailed finite element (FE) model of aircraft tire was established based on the actual geometry of the target tire for numerical simulations. As the major component of this tire, rubber material usually presents a complicated mechanical behavior. To obtain the reliable hyperelastic properties of rubber, a series of material tests have been processed. Moreover, in order to validate the proposed model, the simulations results of inflation and static load scenarios were compared with the experimental results. Both of the control volume and corpuscular particle method methods were used in the numerical simulations of aircraft tire. Findings The comparisons of the two methods exhibit close agreement with the experimental results. To assess the safety of aircraft tire during the landing scenario, the dynamic simulations were processed with different landing weights and vertical landing speeds. According to the relevant airworthiness regulations and technical documents, the tire pressure, deflection and load have been chosen as the safety criteria. Subsequently, the analysis, results and comments have been discussed in detail. Originality/value The validated FE model proposed in present study can be effectively used in tire modeling in static and dynamic problems, and also in the design process of aircraft tire.

An ideal occlusal scheme plays an important role in a good prognosis of All-on-Four applications, as it does for other implant therapies, due to the potential impact of occlusal loads on implant prosthetic components. The aim of the present three-dimensional (3D) finite element analysis (FEA) study was to investigate the stresses on abutments, screws and prostheses that are generated by occlusal loads via different occlusal schemes in the All-on-Four concept. Three-dimensional models of the maxilla, mandible, implants, implant substructures and prostheses were designed according to the All-on-Four concept. Forces were applied from the occlusal contact points formed in maximum intercuspation and eccentric movements in canine guidance occlusion (CGO), group function occlusion (GFO) and lingualized occlusion (LO). The von Mises stress values for abutment and screws and deformation values for prostheses were obtained and results were evaluated comparatively. It was observed that the stresses on screws and abutments were more evenly distributed in GFO. Maximum deformation values for prosthesis were observed in the CFO model for lateral movement both in the maxilla and mandible. Within the limits of the present study, GFO may be suggested to reduce stresses on screws, abutments and prostheses in the All-on-Four concept.

Abstract Because the structural integrity of brake systems and tires can be related to the temperature, this work proposes a transient heat transfer finite element analysis (FEA) model to study the overheating in drum brake systems used in trucks and urban buses. To understand the mechanics of overheating, some constructive variants have been modeled regarding the assemblage: brake, rims, and tires. The model simultaneously studies the thermal energy generated by brakes and tires and how the heat is transferred and dissipated by conduction, convection, and radiation. The simulated FEA data and the experimental temperature profiles measured with thermocouples have been compared giving good correlation.
