Abstract To improve the fretting wear performance of 18CrNi4A steel, DLC, TiAlN and DLC/TiAlN coatings were deposited on the surface of carburized 18CrNi4A steel, respectively. The microstructure morphologies, chemical compositions, and mechanical properties of these coatings were evaluated. The fretting tribological properties of pad/flat contact pairs for carburized 18CrNi4A steel, DLC, TiAlN and DLC/TiAlN coatings were investigated in different lubricant environments including dry sliding and #RIPP 7254 aviation grease. The results show that DLC, TiAlN and DLC/TiAlN coatings deposited on the carburized 18CrNi4A steel surface can improve surface roughness, hardness, fracture toughness and resistance to plastic deformation. DLC, TiAlN and DLC/TiAlN coatings deposited on the surface of carburized 18CrNi4A steel can make the surface of the substrate have excellent fretting wear properties. DLC and DLC/TiAlN coatings have lower coefficient of friction and better fretting wear resistance than TiAlN coatings in dry sliding condition, and DLC/TiAlN coatings have the lowest wear rate in #RIPP 7254 grease lubrication condition. In addition, the wear mechanisms of carburized 18CrNi4A steel, DLC, TiAlN and DLC/TiAlN coatings in dry sliding and #RIPP 7254 aviation grease conditions were analyzed.

The tribological behavior of a steel/glass ball-on-flat contact was studied by synchronizing the friction measurements with an acoustic emission device and a vision system. The results highlight two distinct friction regimes identified with low and high friction values. Their transition is characterized by a modification of acoustic emission signals. In addition, two main damage and wear mechanisms are identified: the creation and propagation of Hertzian cracks visible on the glass surface and the constitution of an interfacial layer of debris. The different accommodation mechanisms, activated successively or simultaneously, are identified for acoustic emission frequencies between 300 and 700 kHz. Eventually, this approach allows a real-time wear mechanisms identification and gives better insights about acoustic emission signals in relation to tribological systems.

Rubbers are widely used in various fields as the important sealing materials, such as window seal, door seal, valve, pump seal, etc. The fretting wear behavior of rubbers has an important effect on their sealing performance. This paper presents an experimental study on the fretting wear behavior of rubbers against the steel ball under air conditions (room temperature at 20 ± 2 °C and humidity at 40%). Three kinds of rubbers, including EPDM (ethylene propylene diene monomer), FPM (fluororubber), and NBR (nitrile–butadiene rubber), are considered in experiments. The sphere-on-flat contact pattern is used as the contact model. The influences of the displacement amplitude, normal force, frequency, and rubber hardness on the fretting wear behavior are discussed in detail. White light profiler and scanning electron microscope (SEM) are used to analyze the wear mechanism of the rubber surface. The fretting wear performances of three rubbers are compared by considering the effect of the displacement amplitude, normal force, frequency, and rubber hardness. The results show that NBR has the most stable friction coefficient and the best wear resistance among the three rubbers.

AbstractWe study the nominal (ensemble averaged) contact pressure p(x) acting on a cylinder squeezed in contact with an elastic half space with random surface roughness. The contact pressure is Hertzian-like for $$\alpha < 0.01$$ α < 0.01 and Gaussian-like for $$\alpha > 10$$ α > 10 , where the dimensionless parameter $$\alpha = h_{\rm rms}/\delta $$ α = h rms / δ is the ratio between the root-mean-square roughness amplitude and the penetration for the smooth surfaces case (Hertz contact).

AbstractPolyacrylamide (PAAm) hydrogels with brush-covered or crosslinked surfaces were produced and their tribological behavior was studied over a wide range of sliding speeds for two different contact geometries: sphere-on-flat and flat-pin-on-flat. Irrespective of the contact geometry, the brushy hydrogel surfaces displayed up to an order of magnitude lower coefficients of friction μ (COF) compared to the crosslinked surfaces, even achieving superlubricity (μ < 0.01). In general, a hydrogel sphere showed a lower coefficient of friction than a flat hydrogel pin at a similar contact pressure over the entire range of sliding speeds. However, after normalizing the friction force by the contact area, the shear stress of hydrogels with either crosslinked or brushy surfaces was found to be similar for both contact geometries at low speeds, indicating that hydrogel friction is unaffected by the contact geometry at these speeds. At high sliding speeds, the shear stress was found to be lower for a sphere-on-flat configuration compared to a flat-pin-on-flat configuration. This can be attributed to the larger equivalent hydrodynamic thickness due to the convergent inlet zone ahead of the sphere-on-flat contact, which presumably enhances the water supply in the contact, promotes rehydration, and thus reduces the friction at high sliding speeds compared to that measured for the flat-pin-on-flat contact.

In this work, the role of the contact stiffness in the measurement of principal variables in fretting wear tests is assessed. Several fretting wear tribometers found in the literature, including one developed by the authors, are analysed and modelled using numerical methods. The results show the importance of the tribosystem stiffness and tangential contact stiffness in the displacement sensor calibration and in the correct numerical modelling of fretting wear tests, especially for flat-to-flat contact configuration. The study highlights that, in most cases, direct comparisons between fretting results with severe wear obtained with different tribometers cannot be performed if the contact stiffness is not properly considered during the development of the experiments.

The paper presents the result of tribological test of ABS and steel samples sliding under dry friction. Polymeric samples were manufactured of ABS material using FDM technology. Testing was carried out in unidirectional sliding in a ring-on-flat contact in a PT-3 tribometer. The scope of tested parameters included volumetric and mass wear, the friction coefficient, and polymeric specimen temperature. Polymeric specimens used in the study were manufactured at various settings of the 3D printing process such as the orientation of the specimen in print with respect to the printer building tray and the thickness of a single layer of the deposited material. Comparisons of the impact of these parameters on tribological performance of the sliding contact were analysed.
