Microstructure and mechanical testing of Al/graphite/Fly-ash metal matrix composite material

Purpose This study aims to attempt to make an aluminum-based composite using reinforcement such as graphite and fly ash. Pollution is an enhanced serious issue of concern for global. Industries play a major role in disturbing the balance of the environment system. Composite is made by using the stir casting technique. The waste that is generated by the industries if left untreated or left to be rotten at some place may prove fatal to invite various types of diseases. Proper treatment of these wastes is the need of the hour, the best way to get rid of such kinds of hazardous wastes is to use them by recycling. Design/methodology/approach Stir casting technique was used to make a composite. Graphite and fly ash were mixed with equal amounts of 2.5% to 15% in aluminum. The microstructure of composite formed after composite was noticed. After seeing the microstructure it was understood that reinforcement particles are very well-mixed in aluminum. Findings When graphite was mixed with 3.75% and 3.75% fly ash in aluminum, the strength of the composite came to about 171.12 MPa. As a result, the strength of the composite increased by about 16.10% with respect to the base material. In the same way, when 3.75% graphite and 3.75% fly ash were added to aluminum, the hardness of the composite increased by about 26.60%. Originality/value In this work, graphite and fly ash have been used to develop green metal matrix composite to support the green revolution as promoted/suggested by United Nations, thus reducing the environmental pollution. The addition of graphite and fly ash to aluminum reduced toughness. The thermal expansion of the composite has also been observed to know whether the composite made is worth using in higher temperatures.

Aluminium based composite are getting a vast scope nowadays because of its properties and availability. In the present work, fly ash and AL2O3 reinforced composite are prepared using stir casting technique for varying wt.% (fly ash 3% and AL2O3 3%, 6% & 9%). Hardness and tensile properties were determined, with the addition of reinforcement the properties are improved compared to the parent metal alone. Based on the evaluation 6% AL2O3 and 3%fly ash gives a better result as compared to other composition.

Purpose Aluminium metal matrix composite (AMMC) is most popular in various industrial applications such as aerospace, automobile, marine, sports and many others. In common practice, silicon carbide, aluminum oxides, magnesium oxide, graphene and carbon nano tubes are the major reinforcing elements to prepare the AMMC. The purpose of this paper is to develop AMMCs reinforce with eggshell (ES) and rice husk ash (RHA). Design/methodology/approach Stir casting process is used for preparation of AMMC. From past few years, more emphasis is given to prepare the AMMCs using agro waste such as rice husk and/or ES as reinforcing materials. In this method, after the Al-matrix material is melted; it is stirred vigorously to form vortex at the surface of the melt, and the reinforcement material is then introduced at the side of the vortex. Stir casting process is a vortex and vigorous method to prepare the AMMCs. First, aluminum alloy (AA3105) is melted in the furnace when metal is in semisolid form. Reinforcement, i.e. ES and RHA are preheated at temperature 220°C and 260°C, respectively. Findings The result of AMMC shows that the tensile strength and hardness increased by using 22.41% and 45.5%, respectively, at 4.75 Wt.% each reinforcement, i.e. ES and RHA, and 1% Cr. The toughness and ductility of metal matrix composite (MMCs) have decreased up to 23.31% and 19.23% respectively by using 1% Cr, 4.75 wt. % ES and by 4.75 wt. % RHA of composite material. Originality/value In this work, Cr, waste ES and RHA have been used to develop green MMC to support the green revolution as promoted/suggested by United Nations, thus reducing the environmental pollution.

PurposeFiber-reinforced polymers (FRP) contain critical electrical conductivity for high-intensity radiated fields such as lightning strike susceptibility, electromagnetic energy from radar, airborne radio frequency transmitter. To provide high-intensity radiated field protection (HIRFP) for the electric and electronic aircraft system and defied the EMI effect on it, metal matrix composite was conquered. To provide the dynamic ever-increasing requirement of industries, it is necessary that Al6061 metal matrix composite assisted with AL2O3 and fly ash is used to construct the aircraft to provide HIRFP. The thickness of the material can be maintained as low as possible to use it as a coating material for the aircraft surface. X-band for oblique incidence is used to measure electromagnetic and mechanical safeguarding properties of composites.Design/methodology/approachDay by day, the applications of aerospace are becoming digital and automated. Proper shielding techniques are required to operate digital electronic devices without electromagnetic interference. It leads to a rapid rise in temperature, thermal ablation, delamination, and adverse effects on the electric and electronic aircraft system. Fly ash, a metal matrix material composite AL6061 with different percentages of reinforcement of Al2O3, was contemplated and experimented with for mechanical properties like tensile strength, density and hardness.FindingsThe obtained results compared with adjusted values and an improvement of 0.19, 0.18, 0.14 g/cm3 for density of MMC-1, MMC-2, MMC-3.31, 11 MPa for tensile strength of MMC-1, MMC-2. 24, 27, 23 BHN for hardness of MMC-1, MMC-2, MMC-3. With regard to the shielding effectiveness the results compared with adjusted values and obtained 11.36, 14.56, 19.47 dB better value than it. According to the above results, fabricated MMC’s provide superior results for a defined application like HIRFP(Surface material of aircraft).Practical implicationsIt can be used to protect electronic devices under a high-intensity radiated field, mainly in aircraft design to protect from lightning effect.Originality/valueFor a better approximation of the signal toward the practical case, the oblique incidence was considered with a different combination of Al2O3 and fly ash, reinforced to pure AL6061 to get better shielding and mechanical properties.

For the past few decades the wheels of an automobile are usually made out of alloy materials. Due to the increased demand for peculiarity and enhanced outlook, metal matrix composites can be used for the alloy wheels. They enhance the performance of the vehicle by reducing its weight and thereby increasing its fuel efficiency. Many literature works are initiated and progressed on design and development of automotive alloy wheels. There is a scope for enhancing their properties with reinforcements. This study focuses on manufacturing a novel metal matrix composite material comprising aluminium as metal matrix and magnesium, silicon carbide and fly ash as reinforcements. The newly fabricated composition is tested. The alloy wheel is further analysed using ANSYS. The analysis results are compared with that of the existing aluminium alloy. The obtained results confirm that the proposed metal matrix composite is a reliable replacement for the aluminium alloy.

Abstract      In this investigation, Al2O3 nano material of 50nm particles size were added to the 6061 Al aluminium alloy by using the stir casting technique to fabricate the nanocomposite of 10wt% Al2O3. The experimental results observed that the addition of 10wt% Al2O3 improved the fatigue life and strength of constant and cumulative fatigue. Comparison between the S-N curves behaviour of metal matrix (AA6061) and the nanocomposite 10wt% Al2O3 has been made. The comparison revealed that 12.8% enhancement in fatigue strength at 107cycles due to 10wt% nano reinforcement. Also cumulative fatigue life of 10wt% nanocomposite was found to be increased by 33.37% and 39.58% for low-high and high-low loading sequences, respectively, compared to the metal-matrix cumulative life. Metal matrix composite (MMC’s) are very much familiar in the field like automobile and aerospace industries owing to their excellent wear and mechanical properties . The fundamental aim of this paper is to augment cognizance amongst the researchers and to attract their consideration towards the present approach to treat with the cryogenic usage for the nonferrous metals. In this writing it is endeavor to deliver the examination findings of character of cryogenic usage on Wear Properties of Al356-ZrSiO4 Particulate Reinforced metal matrix Composites adapted by Stir Casting technique. The amount of reinforcement is changed from 0 to 12wt% in track of 3 %. The ready composites are exposed to wear testing as per ASTM standards using pin on disc machine .The hardness of the composites was found to augment with augment in reinforcement in the composite. The inference obtained discloses that as reinforcement content in the composites increment and execution of cryogenic usage to composite amended the wear resistance.

The present study deals with tapping of Al6061/SiC metal matrix composite. Stir casting technique was used for the fabrication of composite. Castings were produced by varying weight percentages of SiC (5%, 7.5% and 10%) of 23μm size in Al6061. The tapping experiments were conducted for the machinability study of Al6061/SiC metal matrix composite using M8 x 1.25 HSS machine taps. The tapping operation was performed under dry condition with different cutting speeds. Torque required for tapping was measured using piezoelectric based 4-component drill tool dynamometer. Surface morphology and profile of thread surfaces were analysed using Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) and metallurgical microscope. Estimation of progressive flank wear of machine taps was undertaken using profile projector. The performance of HSS machine tap was evaluated in terms of tapping torque, tool flank wear, and surface characteristics of thread surfaces. The flank wear of uncoated HSS machine tap increased with the increase in weight percentage of SiC in Al/SiC composite for a particular cutting speed. Further, when the matrix materials were reinforced by the same kind and the same weight percentage of SiC particles, the flank wear of the tool was found to increase with cutting speed. In addition, the damage caused to thread profiles increased with the increase in cutting speed and weight percentage of SiC.

Solid Glass Microspheres (SGM) in the range of 10–20 vol. % were used as reinforcement for making aluminium alloy metal matrix composite having density 2.66–2.68 gm/cc using stir-casting technique. Aluminium alloys are not new for synthesizing Metal Matrix Composites (MMC’s), as they have already established their exceptional ability to sketch out the material for required properties where high strength is expected from a low density material. This has made them one of the widely used materials for aeronautics and marine applications where strength and weight are among the major governing factors for the suitability of any material. So, an effort is made to enhance the strength of aluminium alloy LM13 without affecting its lightness, by reinforcing it with Solid Glass Microspheres (SGM). This synthesized composite, is characterized in terms of its density and compressive deformation behaviour. It was observed that the developed composite behaves somewhat like a high strength aluminium foam under compressive deformation as exhibited in the stress–strain curves. The results of density evaluation and compression showed a substantial enhancement in the compressive strength of the developed composite with a considerably low change in density.

AbstractChicken eggshell (ES) is an aviculture by-product that has been listed worldwide as one of the worst environmental problems. The effective utilisation of ES biowaste is strongly encouraged in our society due to environmental and economic reasons. The aluminium alloy (AA) 2014/5 wt% carbonised ES metal matrix composite used in this study was fabricated by electromagnetic stir casting technique at parameters of 12 A (current), 180 s (time) and 700°C (matrix pouring temperature), respectively, and immediately extruded on universal testing machine at 60 MPa using cylindrical H13 tool steel die coated with graphite to avoid upper flow of ES particles and to improve wettability of carbonised ES with AA2014 alloy. Microstructures of composites show uniform distribution of carbonised ES particles. Density and overall cost of the metal matrix composite decreases 3.57% and 5%, respectively, when carbonised ES particulate is added 5% by weight. Tensile strength, hardness, toughness and fatigue strength of AA2014/5 wt% carbonized eggshell composite were also measured. Results show an improvement in these mechanical properties with addition of ES in the matrix alloy.
