Rolling-element bearings are the most commonly used components in all rotating machinery. The variations in the operating conditions such as an increase in the number of operating cycles, load, speed, service temperature, and lubricant degradation result in the development of various defects such as pitting, spalling, scuffing, scoring, etc. The defects that appeared on rolling contact surfaces cause surface deterioration and change in the vibration and sound levels of the bearing system. The present experimental investigations are aimed at assessing the surface fatigue wear that appears on the contact surfaces of roller bearings. The studies considered the estimation of specific film thickness, analysis of surface fatigue wear developed on the rolling-element surfaces, surface roughness analysis, grease degradation analysis using Fourier transform infrared radiation, and vibration and sound signal measurement and analysis. The results obtained from the experimental investigation provide a good correlation between surface wear, vibration, and sound signals with a transition in the lubrication regimes in the Stribeck curve.

Taking the crankshaft-rolling bearing system in a certain type of compressor as the research objective, dynamic analysis software is used to conduct detailed dynamic analysis and optimal design under the rated power of the compressor. Using Hertz mathematical formula and the analysis method of the superstatic orientation problem, the relationship expression between the bearing force and deformation of the rolling bearing is solved, and the dynamic analysis model of the elastic crankshaft-rolling bearing system is constructed in the simulation software ADAMS. The weighted average amplitude of the center of the neck between the main bearings is used as the target, and the center line of the compressor cylinder is selected as the design variable. Finally, an example analysis shows that by introducing the fuzzy logic neural network algorithm into the compressor crankshaft-rolling bearing system design, the optimal solution between the design variables and the objective function can be obtained, which is of great significance to the subsequent compressor dynamic design.

The dynamic and hydrodynamic properties of the pad in the fluid pivot journal bearing are investigated in this paper. Preload coefficients, recess area, and size gap, which were selected as input parameters to investigate, are important parameters of fluid pivot journal bearing. The pad’s pendulum angle, lubricant oil flow through the gap, and recess pressure which characterizes the squeeze film damper were investigated with different preload coefficients, recess area, and gap sizes. The computational models were established and numerical methods were used to determine the equilibrium position of the shaft-bearing system. Since then, the pendulum angle of the pad, liquid flow, and recess pressure were determined by different eccentricities.

When the ball bearing serving under the combined loading conditions, the ball will roll in and out of the loaded zone periodically. Therefore the bearing stiffness will vary with the position of the ball, which will cause vibration. In order to reveal the vibration mechanism, the quasi static model without raceway control hypothesis is modeled. A two-layer nested iterative algorithm based on Newton–Raphson (N-R) method with dynamic declined factors is presented. The effect of the dispersion of bearing parameters and the installation errors on the time-varying carrying characteristics of the ball-raceway contact and the bearing stiffness are investigated. Numerical simulation illustrates that besides the load and the rotating speed, the dispersion of bearing parameters and the installation errors have noticeable effect on the ball-raceway contact load, ball-inner raceway contact state and bearing stiffness, which should be given full consideration during the process of design and fault diagnosis for the rotor-bearing system.

The air-gap eccentricity will produce unbalanced magnetic pull and cause vibrations and noises in a motor. In this study, the dynamic behavior of a synchronous motorized spindle with inclined eccentricity is investigated. A semi-analytical method is proposed to model the unbalanced magnetic pull and the electromagnetic torque of a rotor with inclined eccentricity, and the semi-analytical method is verified by the finite element method. The dynamic model of a spindle-bearing system is built by taking the centrifugal force and gyroscopic effects into account. Then, the vibration response of dynamic displacement eccentricity, inclined eccentricity including displacement eccentricity and angle eccentricity, rotating speed, and unbalanced mass eccentricity in both time domain and frequency domain are simulated and analyzed. The results show that the eccentricities can lead to fluctuations in amplitudes of the dynamic displacement response and the angle response. The frequency components of the dynamic responses are the combination of rotating frequency, VC frequency, and power frequency. It is indicated that the coupling interactions of bearing forces, unbalanced mass force, and unbalanced magnetic pull have an obvious effect on the spindle-bearing system.

This article presents the experimental and statistical methodology for localized fault analysis in the rotor-bearing system. These defects on outer race, on inner race, and on a combination of ball and outer race are considered. In this study speed, load and defects were considered as the essential process variables to understand their significance and effects on vibration response for the rotor-bearing system. Three factors at three levels were considered for experimentation, and the experiment was designed for L27 based on design of experiments (DOE) methodology. From the experiments, the vibration response results are recorded in terms of root mean square value for the analysis. Response surface methodology (RSM) is used for identifying the interaction effect of varying process parameters upon the response of vibrations by response surface plot. The rotor-bearing test setup is used for experimentation and is analyzed by using DOE. This study establishes the prediction of fault in the rotor-bearing system in combined parametric effect analysis and its influence with DOE and RSM.
